Tax preparer (relative) keeps delaying filing until Feb 15th + refund amount suddenly changed - possibly stealing?

My tax preparer is a family member and for 5 years she always insists on waiting until February 15th to file my taxes. This year she told me one refund amount but wouldn't submit until I pushed her. Then suddenly messaged me saying it was $850 more than what she originally said. Starting to get suspicious about all these years of delays. Should I be worried?

Tax professional here. February 15th is actually a significant date - it's when most employers and financial institutions are required to have all W2s and 1099s submitted. Your preparer is likely waiting to ensure all documents are available to avoid having to file amendments. However, the changing refund amount without explanation is concerning. Ask for a detailed explanation of the calculations and consider getting copies of your previous returns to review.

hey instead of stressing about this, you should try taxr.ai - its an AI tool that analyzes your transcripts and can show you exactly what's been filed in your name over the years. costs like $1 but totally worth it to see if anything sketchy has been going on https://taxr.ai

in the same boat with my sister-in-law... she does taxes 'on the side' and always has some excuse about timing. Starting to think its time to use HR Block lol

The Feb 15 thing is legit but changing refund amounts without explanation is sketchy. id ask for a full breakdown of the numbers tbh
