IRS just put a hold on my refund - agent said I'll get a letter by April 15th - has this happened to anyone?

Just got off the phone with the IRS this morning. The representative told me there's a hold on my refund and I should be receiving a letter in the mail by April 15th explaining why. This has never happened to me before and I'm really anxious about it. Turbo Tax has prepared my taxes for the past several years without any issues until now. I filed in early February and was expecting my refund by now. I've been planning to use this money to catch up on some bills so this is really stressing me out. Anyone else experience something similar? How long did it take to resolve? I'm hoping it's just something minor they need to verify.

Chloe Martin

Yes, this is fairly common. The IRS places holds on refunds for various reasons: - Identity verification needed - Income verification - Credit claims that need review (like Earned Income Credit) - Potential fraud prevention - Random compliance checks The letter will explain exactly what they need from you. Most likely it's a 4464C (verification of income) or 5071C (identity verification) letter. If it's identity verification, you'll need to either call a specific number or visit idverify.irs.gov to confirm your identity. These holds are often just procedural and don't mean you've done anything wrong. Once you respond with whatever they're requesting, they typically process the refund within 2-3 weeks. If it's a random review, sometimes they release it without you needing to do anything. Just be sure to respond to the letter promptly when you receive it. The worst thing you can do is ignore it.

Thank you for this detailed response! It's making me feel a bit better. Did you have to go through this process yourself? How long did it take to resolve if you did?

Yes, I had to verify my identity last year. I used the ID verify website (took about 15 mins) and had my refund in about 9 days after that. If they need documentation, it can take longer - up to 8 weeks in some cases. Just keep checking your transcript if you can access it online.

This happened to me two years ago. Turned out to be a random audit flag. They wanted proof of my childrens residency for EIC. I sent in school records and medical docs. Took about 6 weeks after I sent everything in to get my refund. Its stressful but usually works out!

I was in the exact same spot last year and was losing my mind trying to figure out what was going on with my refund. Tried calling the IRS like 20 times but could never get through. Finally I found this tool called taxr.ai that scanned my transcript and explained exactly what was happening and what I needed to do next. It showed me that I had a 570 code (refund hold) followed by a 971 (notice issued) which matched what you're describing. The tool walked me through the whole process and I knew exactly what to expect when the letter arrived. Saved me hours of stress and confusion trying to decode everything myself. Check it out at https://taxr.ai - seriously a gamechanger for dealing with IRS issues.

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

It does way more than just read the transcript. It actually interprets all the codes and tells you in plain English what's happening with your return, when to expect your refund, and what actions you need to take. It can even predict what letter you're going to get based on the codes. Way better than trying to google every code and piece together the timeline yourself.

OMG I just tried this and I'm blown away!!! I've been struggling for weeks to understand why my refund was delayed and in 5 minutes this explained EVERYTHING. It even predicted I'm getting a CP12 letter next week and explained exactly what that means. This should be pinned at the top of the subreddit for real. Thx for sharing this 🙏

There is a cost but honestly it was the best money I've spent all tax season. It saved me literally days of stress and confusion trying to piece together what was happening with my refund.

When I had a hold on my refund last year I spent DAYS trying to get through to the IRS without success. Then I found this app called Claimyr that got me connected to an actual IRS agent in like 45 minutes. I just entered my info at claimyr.com and they called me when they had an agent on the line. The agent explained exactly what was causing the hold (turned out to be a simple identity verification issue) and I got my refund about 2 weeks after resolving it. Talking to a real person saved me weeks of waiting for letters and wondering what was happening. Best money I ever spent considering how much my refund was.

Are you sure this works? Sounds too good to be true after I've spent hours on hold with the IRS.

I was skeptical too but yeah it actually works. They basically wait on hold for you and then call you when they get through to an agent. Saved me from sitting on hold for hours.

Does this app actually connect you with the IRS or is it some third party tax service?

0 coins

It connects you directly with the real IRS. They just handle the hold time for you. When they get an actual IRS agent on the line, they call you and connect you. Then you're talking directly to the IRS just like if you'd called yourself and waited on hold.

Oh wow that's genius. I'm definitely trying this. Been trying to get through for weeks with no luck!

Yeah this happens all the time. They did this to me twice. Both times were for different reasons. First time they needed to verify my identity because someone attempted to file a return using my ssn. Second time they had questions about my dependant since both me and my ex claimed our son. Most refund holds are cleared relatively fast. Just follow the instructions on the letter when you get it.

Dont worry too much. The IRS puts holds on a ton of returns especially at the beginning of the season. Theyre trying to catch fraud before they send out money. Once you get the letter, it'll explain what you need to do. Could be anything from providing extra documentation to verifying your identity. Ive had a couple holds before and both times I got my refund, just a few weeks later than expected.

Yup, happened to me too. Got a letter asking for more info on my business expenses. Sent what they asked for and got my refund about 6 weeks after.

That makes me feel better. Thanks everyone for chiming in. I guess I'll just wait for the letter and see what they need from me.

anyone else notice that HnR block and turbo tax have more issues every year? used to be so reliable but now it feels like everyone i know who uses them gets some kind of hold or delay. i switched to an actual CPA last year and havent had any issues since

100% agree. They're cutting corners and their software quality has gone downhill. My turbotax return had errors last year that I had to fix myself. Switched to a local tax guy this year and everything went smooth.

Disagree. I've used H&R Block for 10 years with zero issues. This sounds more like an IRS problem than a tax prep problem. They're just the messengers.

idk man, my friend who does her own taxes with freetaxusa hasnt had any issues either. might be something to the 'big box' tax services just rushing people through

Exact same thing happened to me. Had to wait for like 5 weeks for some letter, turns out they just needed to verify my identity because of 'unusual activity' on my account (there wasnt any). Had to go to their ID verify website, answer a bunch of questions, and then my refund was released like 10 days later. Super annoying but not the end of the world.

the irs is such a joke lol. they have no problem taking our money but when its time to give it back suddenly they need to "verify" everything. meanwhile people out here struggling waiting for money that's rightfully theres.

0 coins

-

Facts! They take it out of every single paycheck with zero issues but when it's refund time suddenly there's all these "verification" procedures 🙄

To be fair, there's actually a TON of tax fraud. Like billions of dollars worth every year. So I get why they have to be careful. Still sucks when you're waiting for your money though.

If you have access to your IRS transcript online, check for a 570 code (refund hold) and 971 code (notice issued). That would confirm what the agent told you. The letter will almost certainly be a 4464C or 5071C, which means they either need to verify your identity or something on your return. These are super common and usually not a big deal.

I tried to access my transcript but I'm having trouble getting verified. Do you know if there's a way to check my refund status other than the WMR tool?

Jacob Smithson

Unfortunately not really. The transcript is the main way to see the detailed status. The Where's My Refund tool is very limited. You could try calling again but you'll probably just get the same info. Best to wait for the letter at this point.

This happened to me this year too! When I finally got the letter it was because someone had tried to file a fraudulent return using my info. Had to verify my identity through id.me which was a pain but got my refund about 3 weeks after that. Hang in there!

The IRS refund system is completely overwhelmed rn. They're putting holds on a ton of returns especially ones with any credits like EITC or CTC. Just gotta wait for the letter. Usually it's nothing serious - just part of their verification processes.

0 coins

-

Aiden Rodríguez

exactly! and it's mostly automated. they have these alogrithms flagging returns left and right. most of the time its nothing serious, just beaurocracy being beaurocracy.

lmao welcome to the irs hostage club 🤡 where they hold onto your money for months while sending cryptic letters. had a hold last year, took 11 weeks to resolve. hopefully yours is faster!

they said something about "income verification" but never actually asked me for any documents. the hold just mysteriously disappeared one day and i got my refund. make it make sense 🥴

Just a tip, when you get the letter, respond to it IMMEDIATELY. Like same day if possible. The faster you reply, the faster they'll process your case. I had a hold last year and waited 2 weeks to send in the docs they wanted, and I think that's why it took so long to get my refund (almost 3 months total).

Check your transcript if you can access it online. There should be codes that tell you exactly what's happening. I was in a similar situation last year and used taxr.ai to interpret my transcript codes. Turns out they were just verifying my self-employment income. The tool told me exactly what to expect and when. Saved me so much anxiety not having to guess what was happening. https://taxr.ai

just got though this EXACT situation last month. letter came and it was a 4464C asking for verification of income. I faxed in my w2s and paystubs (yes they still use fax machines in 2025 lol) and got my refund 3 weeks later. Don't stress too much - these are routine checks.

Had this happen last year and got the run around for WEEKS. Couldn't get through on the phone. Finally used claimyr.com to get through to an agent (the app calls and waits on hold for you, then connects you to an IRS rep). The agent cleared the issue on the spot and I had my refund 8 days later. If you're really depending on that money, might be worth it to talk to an actual human instead of waiting for the mysterious letter.

Thanks for the suggestion. I might try that if the letter doesn't come soon. How long did it take to get through to someone?

I got a call back in about an hour. Way better than the 3+ hours I spent trying to get through on my own. The agent was actually really helpful once I got connected.

Bet it's a identity verification thing. Either that or they're checking your income/deductions. I had this last year. Got a letter, had to upload some documents proving my identity, and then my refund was released about 2 weeks later. Don't stress too much, these are just random checks they do.

They're just doing this to earn interest on our money for as long as possible. Pure scam. I had a hold placed on my refund for no reason last year. When the letter finally arrived it just asked me to verify my identity by answering a few basic questions. Got my refund 3 weeks later with zero explanation for the hold.

This! The government uses our refunds as an interest free loan all year AND THEN makes us jump through hoops to get our own money back. It's such a broken system.

Actually the IRS doesn't make interest on held refunds. That's not how government accounting works. They do these holds to prevent fraud, which is a massive problem.
