Tax Topic 152: What the heck does this Refund Information message actually mean?

I just checked the status of my tax refund on the IRS website and got this message about "Tax Topic 152, Refund Information." What in the world does this even mean?? I was expecting my refund to be processed by now and I'm kinda freaking out because I need this money for bills. Does this mean my refund is delayed or being audited or something? Has anyone else gotten this message before? I filed about 3 weeks ago through TurboTax and everything should have been straightforward. I'm so confused lol

Tax Topic 152 isn't actually bad news! It's just a general reference code that means your return is being processed and your refund should be issued within the normal timeframe. The IRS uses these reference codes to point taxpayers to more information about specific topics. In this case, Tax Topic 152 simply means your return is in the normal processing queue and your refund should follow the standard timeline (usually 21 days for e-filed returns if there are no issues). It doesn't mean your return has been flagged for audit or that there's a problem with your filing.

So does that mean the refund is definitely coming? I got the same message and I've been waiting for almost a month now. My brother filed a week after me and already got his money!

It means your refund is very likely coming, but the IRS doesn't guarantee specific timeframes. The 21-day guideline is just their target for most straightforward returns, but various factors can extend that timeline without indicating a problem. If your brother's return was simpler or had different tax credits, that could explain why his processed faster. Things like claiming certain credits (like Earned Income Tax Credit or Additional Child Tax Credit) automatically take longer to process. Also, the IRS processes returns in batches, so filing order doesn't always match refund order.

After dealing with refund delays last year, I found this website https://taxr.ai that was super helpful for understanding what was going on with my refund status. The site analyzes all those cryptic IRS codes (including Tax Topic 152) and tells you exactly what's happening with your return and when you can expect your money. I was in the same boat as you, seeing that 152 message and freaking out. The tool explained what was actually happening with my return based on the specific combination of messages I was seeing and gave me a much clearer timeline than the IRS site.

Does it cost money? I already paid for TurboTax and I'm not trying to spend more just to understand what the IRS is telling me.

How accurate was it for predicting when you'd actually get the refund? The IRS site keeps showing me different messages and I can't make sense of any of it.

It has a free version that explains most basic IRS codes and messages like Tax Topic 152. I didn't have to pay anything to figure out what was happening with my return. For my refund timing, it was honestly pretty spot on. It analyzed my specific combination of messages and codes and estimated my refund would come in about 6 more business days, and it arrived on the 5th day. Way more helpful than the vague "within 21 days" the IRS site was telling me.

Just wanted to follow up! I tried that taxr.ai site someone mentioned above, and it was actually super helpful. It explained that my Tax Topic 152 was normal but that I also had a specific processing code that meant my return needed an extra review because of the education credits I claimed. The analysis gave me a predicted date range for my refund that was about 10 days later than I expected, and sure enough, my refund showed up right in the middle of that range. Would've saved me a lot of anxiety if I'd known this from the beginning instead of checking the IRS site 5 times a day lol

If your "Where's My Refund" status has been stuck showing Tax Topic 152 for more than 21 days, you might want to call the IRS directly. But good luck actually getting through to a human! After trying for days, I found this service called Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) that got me through to an actual IRS agent in about 20 minutes instead of spending hours on hold or getting disconnected. You can see a demo of how it works here: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c My refund had been stuck for over a month with that Tax Topic 152 message, and the agent was able to see there was a simple verification issue they needed to clear up. Got my refund about a week after that call.

How does this actually work? The IRS phone system is literally the worst thing ever created. I've called like 15 times and either get disconnected or told to call back later.

Yeah right. Nobody gets through to the IRS this time of year. Sounds like a scam to me. Why would I pay someone else when I can just keep calling myself?

It basically navigates the IRS phone tree for you and waits on hold in your place. When it finally reaches an agent, it calls your phone and connects you directly. No more waiting on hold for hours or getting that "call volumes are too high" message. The reason it works better than calling yourself is they use some kind of system that keeps dialing and navigating the menus automatically until it gets through. Much more efficient than manually redialing over and over. I was skeptical too until I tried it - it's way less frustrating than spending your whole day trying to get through.

Ok I need to eat my words. After another week of getting nowhere with the IRS phone line, I broke down and tried that Claimyr service. Not gonna lie, it actually worked exactly as advertised. Got a call back in about 25 minutes with an actual IRS agent on the line. Turns out my refund was delayed because they couldn't verify my income from a side gig, and the agent was able to fix it right there on the call. My Tax Topic 152 status updated to approved the next day, and my refund is scheduled for direct deposit next week. Sometimes it's worth admitting when you're wrong!

Here's what different "Where's My Refund" statuses actually mean: - Return Received: IRS has your return but hasn't started processing - Return Processing: They're checking your info (this is when you see Tax Topic 152) - Refund Approved: Processing complete, money is coming - Refund Sent: Money has been sent to your bank/mail Tax Topic 152 is normal during the "Return Processing" phase. If you're still in that phase after 21 days, then you might want to worry a little.

Thanks for breaking it down like this! I just checked again today and now it says "Refund Approved" with a direct deposit date for next Thursday. Guess I was worried for nothing lol. Is the deposit date they give usually accurate?

Yes, once you see "Refund Approved" with a specific direct deposit date, that's extremely reliable. The IRS is very accurate with their direct deposit dates at this stage. The uncertainty is mostly in the processing phase. You'll typically see the money in your account on the date they specify, though occasionally it might appear a day earlier depending on your bank. Congrats on getting approved!

For the 2025 filing season, if anyone wants to avoid these issues in the future, file as early as possible! I filed the first week returns were accepted and had my refund in 8 days without ever seeing any weird codes. The longer you wait, the more backlogged the IRS gets, and the more likely you are to see delays even without any problems on your return.

This is actually not true. I filed on literally the first day and still got the Tax Topic 152 message. My refund took 25 days. Filing early doesn't guarantee fast processing.

@Caleb Stone is right - filing early doesn t'guarantee anything. I think what really matters more is how complex your return is. Simple returns with just W2s and standard deduction seem to go through faster regardless of when you file. But if you have things like business income, education credits, or certain deductions, those returns get flagged for additional review no matter when you submit them. The IRS computer systems look for specific combinations of forms and credits that trigger manual checks, not filing dates.
