Watch out for tax prep scams - got ripped off and fighting to get my $3400 refund back from shady preparer
Just went through a tax nightmare and want to warn everyone. I trusted a 'friend of a friend' to prepare my taxes in April. Big mistake. She charged me a $650 'preparation fee' but didn't tell me until AFTER filing. Then I discovered she listed a completely different bank account for my $3400 refund deposit. When I confronted her, she claimed it was a 'processing account' and I'd get my money minus her fee. Three weeks later, no money and she's ghosting me. I checked my transcript and saw the refund was issued May 2nd. Called the IRS and they confirmed the money was sent to HER account. They advised filing Form 14157 (Tax Preparer Complaint) and Form 14157-A (Tax Preparer Fraud) immediately. Also filing a police report tomorrow. Keep ALL your text messages, emails, and any receipts as evidence. These scammers are everywhere, especially targeting people they think won't notice or fight back. Please just do your own taxes next year - it's honestly not that complicated with the free filing software. Has anyone dealt with something similar? What worked to get your money back?

Tax professional here. This is unfortunately becoming extremely common. You're doing the right things by filing Form 14157 and Form 14157-A. Make sure to include ALL documentation showing your interactions with this preparer. You should also: • File a complaint with your state's board of accountancy • Report to the IRS Criminal Investigation division at 800-829-0433 • File a complaint with the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov • Consider small claims court (for amounts under $5-10K depending on your state) Keep in mind the IRS won't help you recover the money directly - they can only penalize the preparer. You'll need to pursue civil action to get your refund back. Document EVERYTHING and don't sign any tax forms without carefully reviewing where your refund is going. Also, check your credit report immediately. Sometimes these scammers use your information to take out loans or credit cards.

Thank you so much for this detailed advice! I already filed complaints with the IRS but didnt know about the state board of accountancy. Will definitely follow those other steps too. Do you think small claims is worth it if she has no assets?

Small claims is always worth pursuing - even if they don't have assets now, the judgment typically stays valid for 5-10 years (varies by state). If they get a job or bank account later, you might be able to garnish wages or levy the account. Also check if your state has a preparer recovery fund!

This happened to my cousin last year. Filed all the complaints but never got his money back. The system is so broken tbh. Sometimes these scammers just change their name and reopen somewhere else 🤷♀️

That does happen sometimes, but filing criminal charges can help prevent that. Tax preparer fraud isn't just a civil issue - it's a criminal offense with potential jail time. That's why documentation is so critical.

If you're dealing with tax issues like this or even just trying to understand your transcript, I highly recommend using taxr.ai. I was in a similar situation last year and spent HOURS trying to figure out where my money went. The tool analyzed my transcript and immediately showed me the refund was diverted. It also gave me step-by-step instructions for filing the right forms with the IRS. Seriously saved me so much headache and guesswork! https://taxr.ai

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

It does WAY more than just reading! It analyzes all the codes, explains what each one means for YOUR specific situation, and tells you exactly what to do next. When I had my refund stolen, it actually showed me which forms to file and how to prove the fraud. A lifesaver when dealing with the IRS!

Just tried this and holy crap where has this been all my life?! I've been staring at my transcript for months with no clue what all those codes meant. Taxr explained EVERYTHING and showed me why my refund was delayed. Worth every penny and saved me hours of confusion!

Nah, just a tool that actually helped me. The IRS doesn't exactly make this stuff easy to understand on your own lol. Try getting a human on the phone to explain your transcript... you'll be on hold until 2027 😂

After spending 3 weeks calling the IRS and never getting through, I used claimyr.com to get an agent on the phone. Had a callback within 45 minutes and got everything sorted out with my refund that was sent to the wrong account. The service connected me directly to an agent who was able to trace my refund and start the process to get it reissued to ME instead of the scammer. Best money I've spent all year considering how much of my refund I would have lost otherwise!

How does this work? The IRS never answers their phones

It basically does the waiting for you. The app navigates all those stupid IRS phone menus and waits on hold, then calls you when there's actually a human ready to talk. Saved me hours of "your call is important to us" hell.

This seems sketchy af... they just magically get you through when no one else can?

Nothing magical about it lol. They just have tech that keeps trying and navigating the phone system. When an agent is available it connects you. Talking to an actual IRS agent got my refund released within days instead of months!

This happened to my sister last year! The "tax preparer" was someone her coworker recommended. She had to file police reports and everything. Took almost 6 months but she finally got the money back through small claims court. Document EVERYTHING and don't let them get away with it!

THE EXACT SAME THING HAPPENED TO ME!!! Except my "preparer" was a guy advertising on Instagram with all these fake reviews. He got $4500 of my refund and now his number is disconnected. Filed police report but they said its a "civil matter" 🙄

Police always say that to avoid doing work. Tell them it's TAX FRAUD which is a federal crime, not just a civil dispute. That usually gets their attention.

Tried that but they still wouldn't take it seriously. I ended up going to the county prosecutor's office directly and THAT finally got things moving.

i used to work for one of those tax prep chains and would see owners pulling this kind of stuff ALL THE TIME. they especially target people who dont speak english well or who have complicated situations with lots of dependents. they know these folks are getting big refunds with earned income credit etc. its disgusting

That's exactly what I think happened to me. When she saw my return was over $3000, she suddenly had this 'fee' that wasn't mentioned before. Makes me sick that they prey on people like this.

yep. and they bank on you not understanding the forms enough to realize what's happening. i quit after seeing the owner change bank info on a single mom's return. she had 4 kids and was getting like $8k back. he pocketed half of it as 'fees' that were never disclosed.

Honest question - what's wrong with using TurboTax or H&R Block online? I've been doing my own taxes for years and it's literally just answering questions. Why do people pay hundreds to these sketchy preparers?

lots of people are intimidated by taxes and think they'll mess it up. or they hear from friends that some 'expert' can get them a bigger refund. these scammers promise huge returns to get clients

Also some people dont have computers or reliable internet. The free versions have income limits too, so if you make over a certain amount or have slightly complicated taxes, suddenly you're paying $100+ for TurboTax anyway.

That makes sense. I guess I just take for granted having stable internet and being comfortable with this stuff. The IRS should really make the free file program more accessible.

TurboTax and H&R Block literally lobby against making taxes simpler so they can keep charging us. The system is designed to be confusing 💯

PSA: Before you file, ALWAYS check line 35d on Form 1040 - that's where the bank account info is for your direct deposit. If you didn't personally enter that info, don't sign the return!!

this is why I always go to the same big chain tax place every year. they might charge more but at least they'r not gonna steal my whole refund

Hate to break it to you but chain places have scammers too. My cousin worked at one and caught a preparer changing bank info on returns all the time. They fired him but didn't report it to police!

After dealing with a similar refund nightmare, I ended up using taxr.ai to figure out what had happened with my IRS account. The service decoded my transcript and showed exactly where my money went and what forms to file. It actually gives you a step-by-step plan for resolving issues rather than just raw data that makes no sense. Saved me so much time compared to trying to interpret all those codes myself! https://taxr.ai

You upload your transcript that you already downloaded from the IRS. It just reads the data that's already in there - doesn't ask for additional personal info. Way safer than giving all your info to some random tax preparer!

anyone know if its too late to amend my return from last year? i think my preparer mighta done the same thing to me 😤

You have 3 years from the filing deadline to amend. So for 2022 taxes (filed in 2023) you have until April 2026. But if fraud was involved you should report it ASAP.

When I tried to call the IRS about my stolen refund, I was on hold for 3 hours and then got disconnected. Used claimyr.com after someone here recommended it, and they got me connected to an IRS rep in under an hour. The agent was able to immediately see that my refund had been fraudulently redirected and started the investigation process. Talking to a real person at the IRS was the only way I got this resolved - best investment I've made considering I got my entire $5200 refund back!

Did the same after my preparer pulled a similar stunt. Getting a REAL IRS agent on the phone made all the difference. They were able to put a trace on my refund and redirect a new one to my actual account. Claimyr saved me from losing nearly 4 grand.

Imma share some wisdom: NEVER EVER SIGN A TAX RETURN WITHOUT READING IT CAREFULLY! Even if you trust the preparer. Check where the refund is going, make sure your income is correct, and verify all deductions. Takes 10 minutes and can save you thousands.

Check if your state has a tax preparer registry or licensing requirement. In some states you can report unlicensed preparers and they face heavy penalties. In California the CTEC can fine them $5000 per return!
