Rejected for 1095-A Form but Marketplace Says I Don't Have One

Got rejected yesterday (April 15th) for a 1095-A form and when I called the healthcare marketplace they said I don't have a 1095-A on file nor have I received one. I do have a 1095-C but that's not why I got rejected. The rejection notice clearly says 1095-A.

Did you have Marketplace insurance at any point during 2023? The 1095-A is only issued if you had coverage through Healthcare.gov or your state exchange. The 1095-C is from an employer-provided plan, which is completely different. If you didn't have Marketplace coverage, you shouldn't need a 1095-A at all. Who rejected your return - the IRS or your tax software?

That's a really good question about who did the rejecting. Hadn't thought about that distinction! Sometimes the software flags things that aren't actually IRS requirements, doesn't it?

I'm having a similar issue but my return was accepted then I got a letter saying I need to provide the 1095-A. How long does it usually take to resolve this kind of thing? The filing deadline is literally today!

This might be a case where your tax software is incorrectly flagging something... I've seen this happen before with certain tax programs. If you indicated somewhere that you had Marketplace coverage when you actually had employer coverage, the system might be looking for a form that doesn't exist for you. You might need to go back and review the healthcare section of your tax return to make sure it correctly reflects your actual coverage situation.

Exactly what happened to me. Software confusion. Fixed it by starting over. Worked perfectly.

I would perhaps suggest that if you're using online software, you might want to check if there's a specific question about having Marketplace coverage that you may have accidentally answered incorrectly. Sometimes these questions can be somewhat confusing, especially if you're not familiar with all the different healthcare form types.

Last year I had almost the exact same issue. Spent 4 hours on hold with the Marketplace trying to get someone to help me. Eventually gave up and used Claimyr (https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c) to get through to an actual human. They confirmed I never had a 1095-A because I never had Marketplace insurance - I had made a mistake on my tax form. Saved me days of frustration and got my return filed correctly within hours. Worth every penny compared to the refund I almost lost.

Is this service actually legit? I've seen it mentioned before but always wondered if it's just paying for something the government should provide for free. Though I guess my time is worth something too... 4 hours on hold is practically criminal.

Compared to the DMV or Social Security office where you can at least go in person, the Marketplace phone system seems designed to be impossible. I've never waited less than 2 hours, even during off-peak times. At least with the IRS you can sometimes get through if you call at exactly 7am.

Here's what you need to do: 1. First, check your tax software and see exactly where it's asking for the 1095-A 2. If you only had employer insurance (1095-C), make sure you're not accidentally indicating you had Marketplace coverage 3. Try removing any reference to the 1095-A in your return 4. If using software, sometimes starting a new return from scratch helps avoid these errors 5. If the IRS rejected your e-filed return, you may need to paper file with a note explaining you only had employer coverage The 1095-C covers employer insurance while 1095-A is only for Marketplace plans. They serve different purposes for tax filing.

This exact issue affected 247,000 taxpayers last year according to a report I read. The solution is specific: you need to contact the Marketplace at exactly 1-800-318-2596 and request a review of your account. Tell them you need a "coverage absence verification letter" which confirms you never had a 1095-A because you never had Marketplace coverage. I had to wait 42 minutes on hold, but once I got through, they emailed me the letter in 3 business days. This matters because without resolving it, your refund will be held and you could face a delay of 6-8 weeks.

Had this prob last yr. Tax software was the culprit. Somewhere in the healthcare section I checked wrong box saying I had ACA coverage when I only had employer ins. Double check ur answers in the healthcare section. Bet you'll find where u accidentally indicated Marketplace coverage. NBD to fix - just gotta find the right screen and correct it. FWIW the 1095-C is what employers send, 1095-A is what Marketplace sends, and 1095-B is what some insurers send. Totally diff forms for diff purposes.

This is super helpful, thanks for breaking down the different forms so clearly. I'm going to double-check my answers right now.

I went through this exact same nightmare last month! The key thing to understand is that if you ONLY had employer insurance (1095-C), you should not be indicating anywhere in your tax return that you had Marketplace coverage. The rejection is likely happening because your tax software thinks you're supposed to have a 1095-A form when you actually don't need one. Go back to the health insurance section of your return and make absolutely sure you're selecting "employer-provided coverage" and NOT "Marketplace coverage" or anything related to Healthcare.gov. Sometimes the wording of these questions can be confusing, but if you only had coverage through your job, you definitely don't need a 1095-A. Once you correct this in your software, the rejection should go away when you resubmit.

This is really helpful advice! I'm dealing with a similar situation right now and was getting so frustrated with the rejection. The part about the wording being confusing in tax software is so true - sometimes it feels like they're asking the same question three different ways and you're not sure which answer they actually want. I'm going to go back and carefully review every single health insurance question to make sure I didn't accidentally check the wrong box somewhere.

This is such a common problem, especially during tax season! I went through something similar two years ago. The most important thing to remember is that the 1095-A and 1095-C are for completely different types of insurance coverage. Since you mentioned you have a 1095-C, that means you had employer-sponsored health insurance, not Marketplace insurance. The rejection is almost certainly coming from your tax software, not the IRS directly. Most tax software programs have a section where they ask about your health insurance coverage, and if you accidentally indicated you had Marketplace coverage, the software will expect a 1095-A form. Go back to that section and make sure you're only indicating employer coverage. Also, if you're still having trouble, consider calling the software company's support line - they deal with this exact issue hundreds of times during tax season and can walk you through the fix quickly.

This is exactly right! I had a similar issue two years back where I kept getting rejected even though I was sure I had answered everything correctly. Turned out I had missed a checkbox buried deep in the health coverage section that was still set to "yes" for Marketplace coverage from when I was just clicking through the software initially. It's worth going through every single health insurance related screen in your tax software - sometimes there are multiple places where this gets asked and you might have missed one. Also, if you're using something like TurboTax or H&R Block, their chat support is usually pretty good at helping you find exactly where the problem is in your return.

I see you're dealing with this on April 15th which adds extra stress! This is definitely a software issue rather than an actual IRS requirement. Since you have a 1095-C (employer coverage) and the Marketplace confirmed you never had their coverage, the problem is somewhere in your tax software settings. Here's what I'd suggest doing immediately: 1) Go to the health insurance section of your return and look for ANY question that might relate to "premium tax credits" or "advance payments" - sometimes these get auto-filled incorrectly, 2) Make sure you're selecting "minimum essential coverage through employer" and nothing related to Healthcare.gov or state exchanges, 3) If you're still stuck, try starting a completely fresh return - sometimes the software gets confused with saved data. Since it's already tax day, if you can't resolve it quickly, consider filing an extension (Form 4868) to give yourself until October to get this sorted out properly. The good news is this is a very fixable problem once you find the right checkbox!

This is such great advice, especially about filing the extension if needed! I'm actually in a similar boat - got rejected this morning and have been panicking all day. The part about checking for "premium tax credits" questions is really smart - I bet that's where a lot of people get tripped up without realizing it. I didn't even know Form 4868 was an option for situations like this. Quick question though - if I file the extension today, does that give me the full 6 months even if I figure out the software issue next week and want to submit earlier?

Yes, filing Form 4868 gives you until October 15th regardless of when you actually submit your return! So if you file the extension today and then fix the software issue tomorrow, you can still submit your return tomorrow - you don't have to wait the full 6 months. The extension just protects you from late filing penalties. Just remember that if you owe taxes, you still need to pay by today (April 15th) to avoid interest charges, even with the extension. But since you're dealing with a rejection issue, you're probably expecting a refund anyway. The extension is really just peace of mind so you can fix this properly without the deadline pressure.

This is such a frustrating situation, especially on tax day! I went through something very similar last year. Since the Marketplace confirmed you don't have a 1095-A on file and you only have employer coverage (1095-C), this is definitely a software error. The key is finding where in your tax software you accidentally indicated you had Marketplace coverage. Look specifically for questions about "premium tax credits," "advance premium tax credit payments," or anything asking if you purchased insurance through Healthcare.gov or a state exchange. Even if you answered the main health insurance question correctly, there might be a secondary question buried somewhere that's still checked "yes" for Marketplace coverage. I'd also recommend clearing your browser cache or restarting the software completely - sometimes these programs glitch and hold onto incorrect information. If you can't fix it quickly today, definitely file Form 4868 for an extension so you have time to sort this out without penalties. You've got this!

Thank you so much for this detailed advice! I'm definitely going to look for those "premium tax credit" questions - I have a feeling that's exactly where I went wrong. The browser cache tip is really smart too, I hadn't thought of that. Filing the extension does seem like the safest option at this point since I'm running out of time today. It's reassuring to know this is a common issue and not something I completely messed up. Really appreciate everyone's help on this thread!
