Refund Sent to Green Dot But Returned to IRS - Now Waiting 10 Weeks for Mail Delivery?

Hey everyone! So my refund was accepted February 13th and the IRS sent it out on the 24th of February to my Green Dot account. The problem is Green Dot sent it back to the IRS for some reason šŸ¤¦ā€ā™‚ļø Now they're telling me it could take up to 10 weeks for me to receive it in the mail! My wife and I were counting on this money for our first big purchase since getting married. I've been trying to call the IRS every day this week but can't get through to anyone. What's my next move here?

You need to be proactive here. The IRS won't contact you about this - you need to reach them. When a direct deposit is rejected, they automatically switch to a paper check, but those 10 weeks are just their standard line. Call the IRS main number (800-829-1040) as soon as they open at 7am your local time. Press 1 for English, then 2, then 1, then 3, then 2, don't enter your SSN, then 2, then 4. That's the fastest path to a human. Keep calling until you get through.

I've tried calling them multiple times and their phone tree seems to change. Is this still accurate? • Do you need to have your tax return in front of you? • Should you have your bank account info ready? • How long is the typical wait once you get in queue?

I had this exact same issue on March 14th last year. Did you verify with Green Dot why they rejected it? Sometimes it's because the name on the account doesn't match exactly what the IRS has. When I called on March 20th, they told me they had already mailed the check on March 18th, so it might be moving faster than they initially told you.

Has anyone actually received their check earlier than the 10 weeks they quote? I wonder if that's just their standard line to cover themselves legally? Seems excessive for simply mailing a check that was already approved for payment.

I was in a similar situation last month - my credit union rejected my deposit because my married name wasn't updated on the account. Spent DAYS trying to get through to the IRS with no luck. Finally tried Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) and got connected to an IRS agent in about 15 minutes. Compared to the 3+ hours I wasted on hold before, it was worth every penny. The agent was able to verify my check had already been mailed on March 18th, so I actually got it much sooner than the 10-week timeline they initially quoted. They can also update your address if you've moved since filing.

I've tried services like this before and found them hit or miss. Did they actually connect you to the right department? Last time I used something similar they got me through to someone who couldn't help with my specific issue and I had to start all over again.

Thanks for sharing this! I've been trying to get through to the IRS for the past week about my amended return. Their hold times are insane right now with tax season in full swing. Might give this a try if I can't get through tomorrow morning.

Did u have to pay upfront or only if they connect u? Wondering how it works bc I'm in the same boat rn and need to talk to someone asap.

I finally got through to Green Dot today! They said my account had a "verification issue" whatever that means. Apparently the name on my tax return didn't exactly match my Green Dot account. So frustrating since I've used them for 3 years with no problems. They confirmed they sent it back to the IRS on Feb 26th. Still can't get through to the IRS though...

I had this happen to me last year! The most helpful thing I did was pull my tax transcript to see what was actually happening. The IRS has these codes that tell you exactly where your refund is in their system. I used taxr.ai to analyze my transcript and it showed exactly when my direct deposit was rejected and when they scheduled the paper check. It even predicted my check's mail date within 2 days. Saved me a ton of anxiety since I could see things were actually moving along despite what the phone reps told me.

According to IRS Publication 5344, when a direct deposit is rejected, the IRS is required to issue a paper check to the address on your most recent tax return. Have you moved recently or filed a change of address with USPS? The IRS won't forward refund checks even if you have mail forwarding set up.

This happened to me exactly 47 days ago. Bank rejected my deposit due to a name mismatch. I called the IRS 14 times before getting through. They told me 9-10 weeks, but my check arrived in exactly 24 days from the rejection date. The system works faster than they claim - they just quote the maximum time to avoid complaints. My advice: check your informed delivery from USPS daily and make sure your mailbox is secure - these checks are prime targets for theft.

Check your tax transcript. It's free. Shows all activity. Look for code 846. That's a refund issued. Check the date next to it. That's when check was mailed. Sign up for informed delivery. Watch for IRS envelope. Might come sooner than 10 weeks. Mine took 3 weeks. Keep address updated. Good luck.

OMG this EXACT thing happened to me last year and I was freaking out!!! 😫 I needed that money for my rent deposit ASAP! The 10 week timeline is total BS - they say that to cover themselves. But PLEASE be careful - when they mail the check, it comes in a very plain envelope that looks like junk mail! I almost threw mine away!! It doesn't scream "TAX REFUND INSIDE" for obvious reasons. Mine came in about 4 weeks, not 10. Hang in there!! šŸ™

Have you checked if your refund status changed on the Where's My Refund tool? It's like a pizza tracker for your money - when they switch from direct deposit to check, it usually updates there first. Also, is the address on your 2023 tax return 100% current? The post office is like a game of telephone - one small error and your check could end up in refund limbo.

Here's what you should do in this situation: 1. Get your tax transcript from IRS.gov 2. Look for code 846 with a date - that's when your check was issued 3. Register for Informed Delivery with USPS to see scans of mail coming to you 4. If you don't receive it within 4 weeks of the 846 date, call IRS to initiate a refund trace 5. If they confirm it wasn't cashed, they'll reissue it The 10-week timeline is their maximum estimate, not typical delivery time. Most checks arrive within 2-4 weeks after being issued.
