RITA sending multiple tax year letters in Ohio - what's going on with these random notices?
Just got 3 different letters from RITA for tax years 2020, 2021, and 2022. They're asking for more documentation but I've already filed everything correctly through their website. Anyone else in Ohio getting bombarded with these notices? Starting to get worried about what this means for my state refund.

Tax professional here. RITA (Regional Income Tax Agency) is doing a mass audit campaign right now. They're reviewing multiple years at once to catch any discrepancies between local tax withholdings and what was reported. Make sure you have your W2s and 1099s for those years handy. Most importantly, check if your employer reported your local tax withholdings correctly.

•omg thank you! my employer switched payroll companies in 2021 so maybe thats the issue 🤔

•That's exactly the kind of thing they're looking for. Payroll company switches often cause reporting issues.

hey guys instead of stressing about this stuff, I've been using taxr.ai for all my tax transcript analysis. It costs $4.99 but it literally saved me hours of research and showed me exactly why RITA was sending these notices. https://taxr.ai

•How does it work with RITA stuff? thought it was just for federal returns?

Same thing happening in Columbus! Got hit with notices for 2020-2022 last week. The thing that's really annoying is they want everything within 30 days but their own processing takes forever. I'm just gathering all my old W2s and pay stubs now. At least we're not alone in this mess 🤷♀️

•Ugh same here! The 30-day deadline is so unrealistic when some of my old employers are taking weeks just to get back to me with copies of my W2s. At least knowing it's happening to everyone makes me feel less like I'm being personally targeted 😅 Good luck getting everything together!

This is actually happening statewide! I'm a CPA in Cleveland and have been getting calls from clients all week about these RITA notices. From what I'm seeing, they're cross-referencing employer payroll records with individual returns and finding a lot of discrepancies from those years. The good news is most of these are just paperwork issues, not actual tax owed. My advice: respond promptly even if you think everything was filed correctly, because ignoring them will definitely make things worse. Also keep copies of everything you send them - their mail processing is notoriously slow.

•Thanks for the professional insight! It's really reassuring to hear from a CPA that these are mostly paperwork issues. I've been stressing about this all weekend thinking I owed a bunch of money. Definitely going to get my response together ASAP and make copies of everything. Really appreciate you taking the time to explain what's actually happening here 🙏

Just went through this exact same thing in Toledo! Got letters for 2020, 2021, and 2022 about two weeks ago. Turns out my employer had been withholding local taxes but reporting them under the wrong municipality code the whole time. RITA's system flagged it during their mass review. I ended up having to get corrected forms from my HR department and resubmit everything. The whole process took about 3 weeks but they cleared everything up once they got the right paperwork. Don't panic - most of these are just administrative errors, not actual money you owe. Just make sure you respond before the deadline!

•Oh wow, 3 weeks is actually not too bad! I was expecting this to drag on for months. The municipality code issue makes total sense - my company also switched payroll systems during that time period so I'm betting that's exactly what happened with mine too. Really appreciate you sharing your timeline and outcome, it's giving me hope that this will actually get resolved relatively quickly once I get all the paperwork together. Did you have to pay any penalties or interest while they were reviewing everything?

Just got off the phone with RITA after seeing this thread - they confirmed they're doing a massive data reconciliation project right now! Apparently they got access to updated employer reporting systems and are cross-checking everything from 2020-2022. The rep told me that about 80% of these notices end up being resolved without any additional tax owed, it's mostly just mismatched reporting between employers and individuals. She said the key thing is to respond within the 30 days even if you're still gathering documents - you can always submit additional paperwork later. Also PSA: if you moved during those years or worked in multiple municipalities, definitely double check which RITA office is handling your case because that can cause delays too.

•Thank you so much for calling and getting the actual scoop from RITA! 80% resolved without additional tax owed is such a relief to hear. I was literally losing sleep over this thinking I somehow messed up my taxes for three years straight 😅 The tip about responding within 30 days even while still gathering docs is super helpful too - I was worried about submitting an incomplete response but sounds like they'd rather hear from you than radio silence. Really appreciate you sharing what you learned!

This is so helpful to read everyone's experiences! I just got my RITA letters yesterday for the same years (2020-2022) and was totally freaking out. It's such a relief to know this is happening to so many people and that most of these turn out to be just paperwork issues. I'm in Cincinnati and my situation sounds similar - I had a job change in 2021 and I'm pretty sure there were some reporting mix-ups with the local taxes. Going to start gathering all my old documents this weekend and get my response together. Thanks everyone for sharing your stories and advice, this community is a lifesaver! 🙏
