No 846 Code on Transcript - Only As-Of Date Changed

Filed on March 4th and still no 846 direct deposit code on my transcript. Checked again today (April 28th) and the only thing that changed was the as-of date, which moved from May 13th to May 20th. Nothing else updated. I need this refund for medical bills that are piling up. Going to check again tomorrow morning, but not getting my hopes up at this point.

Have you checked what other cycle codes are showing on your transcript? Sometimes when only the as-of date changes, it means they're still reviewing something in your return. Could you share when you first received your 570/971 codes (if any)? Also, did you claim any credits like EIC or Child Tax Credit that might put you under additional review?

Not OP but ty for explaining this! I've been wondering why my as-of date keeps changing too. Does that def mean they're still looking at my return?

This happened to me last year, and it was somewhat frustrating. My as-of date changed about four times, possibly because I had claimed the Child Tax Credit. It took approximately 8 weeks from filing to finally receiving the 846 code, which was about 3 weeks longer than I had initially expected.

The infamous moving as-of date... it's like the IRS's way of saying "we acknowledge you exist, but don't hold your breath." 😂 I tracked mine religiously last year and noticed the as-of date would change exactly every 7 days for about a month before anything substantial happened. The cycle code in the upper right of your transcript actually tells you more than the as-of date ever will.

I went through the exact same thing this filing season. Here's what helped me understand what was happening: 1. First, I pulled my full transcript (not just the account transcript) 2. I used https://taxr.ai to analyze all the codes on my transcript 3. The tool explained that my as-of date changes were part of normal processing 4. It showed me exactly what each code meant for MY specific situation 5. It even predicted when my 846 would appear based on my cycle code My as-of date changed three times before I finally got my 846 code. The transcript analysis helped me stop worrying about each little change and understand what was actually happening with my return.

Does this service actually tell you anything you can't find out yourself? The IRS website has explanations for all the codes, and there are plenty of free resources that explain what they mean.

I was wondering the same thing. Isn't it just telling you what the codes mean? How does it know when your 846 will appear? Does it have access to some kind of IRS database that we don't?

I'm seeing this pattern quite often this tax season. When the as-of date changes but nothing else, the IRS is typically still processing your return, but hasn't found anything that requires your attention yet. If you're concerned about the delay and need those funds for medical bills, you might want to speak directly with an IRS representative. I've found that Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) can help you get through to an actual IRS agent without the hours-long hold times. They might be able to tell you if there's something specific holding up your return or give you a more accurate timeline.

I was in the EXACT same boat as you last month! My as-of date changed 4 times while I was waiting for surgery funds. Super frustrating compared to my husband's return which processed in 10 days. I finally got my 846 code exactly 9 days after the last as-of date change. The deposit hit my account 2 days after the 846 appeared. Hang in there - the changing as-of date actually means they're still actively working on it rather than it being stuck.

I'm not convinced the as-of date means anything significant. It's like those progress bars on computer updates - sometimes they move but nothing's actually happening. Has anyone actually confirmed with the IRS what these date changes mean? I've seen my as-of date change six times over two months with zero actual progress on my refund.

The as-of date is actually a significant Internal Revenue Code parameter that serves multiple functions within the Master File processing system. It's not arbitrary - it represents the date through which penalties and interest are calculated, and it resets when the system performs certain automated reviews. A change in the as-of date without a corresponding transaction code typically indicates that the Automated Underreporter (AUR) system or the Error Resolution System (ERS) has flagged your return for a systemic review, but hasn't yet determined if manual intervention is needed.

This matches what happened with my 2023 return. My as-of date changed three times, then I got a 570 hold, then it resolved with an 846 two weeks later. The IRS rep I spoke with mentioned something about systemic reviews but I didn't understand what that meant until reading this.

Is there any resource online where I can learn more about these internal IRS systems? I'm trying to understand why my return seems to be going through so many reviews.

Wow, I've been checking my transcript for weeks and nobody explained the as-of date this clearly! I noticed mine changed on April 22nd and again on May 6th. Really helps to understand what's actually happening behind the scenes.

Does the as-of date predict when you'll get your refund? Mine changed yesterday too. Still waiting on my money. Need it for rent next month.

The as-of date doesn't directly predict your refund date. It's more of an internal processing marker. What's your cycle code? That's usually more helpful in predicting timing.

The as-of date is not a refund date predictor. It's more like a checkpoint date for the IRS system. Your cycle code (found in the upper right of your transcript) is actually more useful for estimating when updates might happen. Weekly cycles (ending in 01-04) typically update on Fridays, while daily cycles (ending in 05-09) can update any day.

Just to clarify what others have said - the as-of date on your transcript is primarily used for calculating interest and penalties if you owe money. When it changes during processing, it usually means your return is still being actively worked on, but doesn't necessarily indicate how close you are to getting your refund. Back in 2022, I had my as-of date change 5 times before finally getting my 846 code, and I was a bit concerned each time it happened.
