My updated last night. There is a 766 code but not an 846 number. The shows an amount with a minus sign, but the amount doesn't match what I filed. It looks like my education credit hasn't been added yet... So my question is, can your final refund amount change if the 846 code hasn't posted yet?

Yes, your refund amount can definitely change until you get that 846 code! The 766 code is for credits (like your education credit) and the minus sign usually means they're still processing/adjusting your return. I've seen this a bunch - they process different parts of returns separately, especially education credits since they need extra verification. Don't worry too much about the amount showing right now. Until you see that beautiful 846 code (which is your official refund issued code), the amount isn't final. BTW, if you want a really detailed analysis of your and estimated completion timeline, check out taxr.ai - it's this new AI tool that breaks down all these codes and gives you a pretty accurate estimate of when everything will be finished. Been recommending it to everyone in the same boat.

•This is so helpful! I'm in a similar situation - my shows a 766 code but the amount doesn't match what I expected either. It's reassuring to know that the amount can change multiple times before the 846 code appears. I was getting worried seeing all these different numbers, but it sounds like that's totally normal during processing. Thanks for explaining how the education credits work too - I had no idea they needed extra verification time!

Hello Jane:) The 766 Code is a positive sign with a credit being issued to your account. The negative amount represents that there is a refund due back to you so no need to worry. The Code 846 will indicate that the refund has actually been issued to you and should be on its way to you as well. You should see an update with that code very soon that will actually release your refund payment.

Yes, your refund amount can definitely change if the 846 code hasn’t been issued yet. If your education credit hasn’t been added I would expect that to change soon.

Yes definitely will change!! My sisters transcripts actually looked the same she had 766 code, plus she was on hold with code 570. She was getting worried on the amount that was being shown on 766 since it did not match to the amount she filed and it was negative so she was worried. We used Claimyr to call irs and lucky she spoke to a lovely man who was helping her understand what the code 766 was for and how her taxes were still being processed and she should look out for that 846 refund code which will be showing her actual amount being deposited. 🤗 -> Here’s a discount link if you would like to use Claimyr https://join.claimyr.com/be256b

•The 766 code is a general code. Code 766 can show up multiple times on your transcript. It is dependent on a number of variables. Generally I would start with the date associated with with the code and the amount. You can use both the date, amount, filing status, and to potentially determine what the credit represents. Your full will tell the rest of the story for the code. It isn't necessarily your refund amount.

Also I was wondering about the lines 766 and 768 because I received my return on 3-2-22 but it’s showing credit to my account and earned income credit for 4-15-22. If they did owe me money would it automatically deposit or would I have to claim it?
1 coin
Leilani Gutierrez
•Don, I just did the math & looks like those credits have been applied already to your refund sent 3/02. So the amount $6,774 is your original amount and might have been a mistake was done when filing your taxes and $1100 was taken out.

Katie Lopez
•Don, IRS reviews your tax and if they see you’re qualified CTC or but if those are not claimed, they will hold your refund and send you a notice in the mail to inform you. So basically irs mails a notice for adjustment to increase or decrease a refund. Decrease happens when you have past taxes due or other debt. I’ve seen someone received a letter. She forgot to claim her CTC and CP12 notice was sent to her. If you’re questioning about your refund and can’t wait for update, I would like to suggest calling irs. Keyanna, looked like it’s still on freeze since I don’t see the resolved code. I would wait until next week, if you see no update since than that would be a month I would follow up with an agent. Usually it takes 9 weeks to get paid once verified but ppl have been receiving it within 2 weeks from verifying. •766 is a credit that will be applied to your refund. I’m guessing the freeze in your account is until you verify. So I suggest doing that asap!

•Melly, your direct deposit is 846. 766 is a credit but it is not a direct deposit so the date doesn’t really matter.

•Your refund amount arriving 02/22/23 will be $6,644. This is the amount that was issued to you by the IRS by the "846 Refund issued" code. As for the future dates and credits applied, it's possible that the credits are for different tax years. The upcoming refund to be issued on Feb. 22, could be for a tax return you filed for a previous year, and perhaps the credits that won't apply until April may be for the current tax year, which is 2023. If the refund and credits are for the same tax year, it's possible that the IRS issued a preliminary refund based on your tax return, but your credits were not yet applied to the calculation. The IRS may adjust your refund amount later when they apply for the credits... I think you'll need to call them to see for sure.

•150 is how much you owe the IRS and 768 and 766 is how they owe you so add 768 and 766 minus 150 what you owe them and that’s how much your refund is

•let's look at the new transactions provided: Tax return filed with an amount of $5,722.00, which typically indicates either the amount of tax owed or a refund due when the tax return was filed. Credit to your account of -$32,158.00, which suggests this amount was credited to your account. A negative amount in this context usually indicates money applied to your account, likely as a refund or an overpayment from a previous year. Additional account action pending and Notice issued both have $0.00 amounts, which do not affect the balance. After including the new transactions, the updated balance suggests that you have a credit of approximately $59,116.21 on your tax account. This could mean an overpayment or credits on your account that exceed what you owe. You may want to contact the tax authority or a tax professional for further clarification and to understand how you can receive this amount or apply it to future tax liabilities

So does this mean that I’m getting my refund on 4/15 next to the code 766? I received a letter on 3/04 and it stated that’s it’s under review
0 coins
Tom Maxon
•The code "766" with the description "Credit to your account" followed by a negative amount typically signifies that a credit has been applied to your tax account. This could be indicative of an overpayment from a previous tax year, a refund from the current tax year, or some other form of credit. The date "04-15-2024" next to it would generally be the effective date of this credit. However, since you received a notice on "03-04-2024" stating that your account is under review, this could mean that the tax authority is currently examining your tax return or account for various reasons. The "Additional account action pending" code "570" indicates that there might be further actions to be taken regarding your account. The review process can delay the issuance of your refund, and the "766" credit entry may be provisional, pending the outcome of the review. It's not a guaranteed refund date, but it could be the scheduled date for the credit or refund to be applied to your account if no issues are found during the review.

•That message at the top usually appears when there are updates processing on your account. Since you have the 766 credit code for 4/15 but no 846 yet, it looks like they're still working through the review process. The 846 code is what you'll want to see - that's the actual refund issued code with your direct deposit date. Keep checking your over the next few days, especially since 4/15 is coming up. The review from your 3/04 letter might be wrapping up soon!

•That's actually a positive sign! The message at the top usually means they're actively processing updates to your account. Since you have the 766 credit for 4/15 but no 846 code yet, it suggests they're still finalizing things from that review letter you got on 3/04. The 846 code is what you really want to see - that's when they've officially issued your refund with the actual deposit date. I'd keep checking your daily, especially with 4/15 approaching. Sometimes the 846 code shows up just a day or two before the actual deposit. The fact that they have a specific date on your 766 code is encouraging though!

•That message usually indicates they're updating your account in real-time! Since you have the 766 credit dated 4/15 but no 846 code yet, they're likely finishing up that review from your March letter. The 846 "refund issued" code is what you're waiting for - that's when you'll see your actual direct deposit date. With 4/15 being Monday, I'd definitely keep checking your over the weekend. Sometimes the 846 appears just 1-2 days before the money hits your account. The fact that they put a specific date on your 766 is actually pretty promising - means they're planning to process it soon!

Based on your situation, it sounds like you're in a really good spot! The 766 code with the 4/15 date is essentially the IRS saying "we owe you this money and plan to send it on this date." Since your education credit hasn't been added yet, that's likely what's causing the amount discrepancy you're seeing. The process usually goes: 766 codes show up first (like yours), then once all the credits and adjustments are finalized, you'll see the 846 code with your actual deposit date. The 846 is the "money's on its way" code. I've seen tons of people in your exact situation - the amount changes multiple times before that final 846 appears, especially with education credits since those take extra verification. Don't stress about the current amount showing, it's definitely going to adjust once they add your education credit. You should see that 846 code pop up within the next week or so, and then your deposit usually follows 1-3 business days after that. The fact that you already have a 766 with a date means they're actively working on your return, which is great news!

•This is such a helpful breakdown! I'm in almost the exact same situation as the original poster - I have a 766 code showing but my amount doesn't match what I filed for either. It's really reassuring to hear that the amount changing multiple times is totally normal, especially with education credits involved. I was starting to worry that something went wrong with my filing, but it sounds like this is just part of their standard processing routine. Thanks for explaining the difference between the 766 and 846 codes too - I had no idea that 766 was just the "we owe you money" code and 846 is the actual "money's coming" code. Now I know what to watch for on my transcript!

•This breakdown is incredibly helpful, thank you! I'm dealing with a similar situation where my shows a 766 code but the refund amount keeps fluctuating. It's such a relief to know that this is completely normal, especially when education credits are involved. I had no idea they required extra verification time - that explains why my has been showing different amounts over the past few weeks. The explanation about 766 vs 846 codes is particularly useful. I've been obsessively checking for an 846 code without really understanding what the 766 meant. Now I know the 766 is basically the IRS acknowledging they owe me money, and the 846 will be when they actually send it. Really appreciate members like you taking the time to explain these processes so clearly!

•This is exactly what I needed to hear! I'm in the same boat with a 766 code showing but my education credit missing from the amount. It's been driving me crazy checking my every day and seeing different numbers. Your explanation about the 766 vs 846 codes makes so much sense - I never understood why there were two different refund-related codes. The fact that education credits need extra verification time is news to me too, but it explains why mine has been stuck in processing limbo for weeks. I feel so much better knowing this is all part of the normal process and not some error with my return. Thanks for breaking this down in such an easy-to-understand way!

•This is so helpful! I'm in a very similar situation - my shows the 766 code but the amount is way off from what I expected. I was getting really anxious thinking something was wrong with my return, but your explanation about the amounts changing multiple times before the 846 code appears is really reassuring. I also had no idea that education credits needed extra verification - that totally explains the delays I've been seeing. It's great to finally understand what these different codes actually mean instead of just stressing about them every time I check my transcript. Really appreciate you taking the time to explain this so clearly!
