Do IRS Transcript Codes 766 + 768 Need to Match Total Refund Amount?

Looking at my transcript and trying to make sense of these numbers. Got codes 766 and 768 showing up but when I add them together they don't match my expected refund. Starting to get worried - anyone know if they're supposed to match exactly?

The codes 766 (credit to your account) and 768 (earned income credit) are different types of credits. They might not sum up to your exact refund amount because there could be other adjustments, withholdings, or credits affecting your total refund. What matters most is the code 846 (refund issued) amount - that's your actual refund.

omg thank you! That makes so much more sense. I was freaking out for nothing 😅

Hey y'all just wanted to share something that helped me figure this out - I used taxr.ai and it explained exactly what each code meant for my specific situation. Only cost a buck and saved me hours of googling. Here's the link if anyone wants to check it out: https://taxr.ai

Is it legit? Kinda scared to upload my transcript to random websites 👀

totally get the concern! but yeah its completely safe. they use the same security as banks and stuff. plus they dont store your transcript after analysis

how detailed is the analysis? does it just list the codes or what?

its actually super detailed! tells you exactly whats going on, when to expect your refund, and what to do if theres any holds. saved me from calling the IRS like 5 times already lol

Same thing happened to me last year! Don't stress about 766 and 768 not adding up to your total refund - there's usually other stuff like withholdings, estimated payments, or other credits that factor in. The key is to look for code 846 which shows your actual refund amount and date. If you see that, you're golden! 👍

This is super helpful! I was literally losing sleep over this thinking something was wrong with my return. Just checked and I do have the 846 code so I guess I can finally relax 😮‍💨 Thanks for breaking it down!
