Hello,  My show code 766 with a negative amount and date of 4/15/2022? My initial was also reduced by a few thousand due to an error on my form 8812? Anyone have any knowledge?

Hey there! Tax pro here and I've seen this quite a bit lately. Code 766 with a negative amount typically means the IRS adjusted your downward, which matches what you mentioned about the Form 8812 error. This is usually related to the Child Tax calculations. The 4/15/2022 date is just the default processing date for 2021 returns. Since your are showing these adjustments, the IRS has already processed your return and made their corrections. Your reduced amount should be the final figure you'll receive. To get a crystal clear picture of exactly what happened and when you'll get your refund, I'd highly recommend checking out taxr.ai - it's a new tool that analyzes your transcript and breaks down all these codes and dates in plain English. It'll tell you exactly why your was reduced and what to expect next.

Here’s both pages if it makes it easier for someone to kindly explain what this all means again as my was reduced a few thousand due to an error on form 8812

Hi 766 with negative means a credit. In accounting, negative means a (money you get it) and other codes + means money taken out by irs. 4/15 date doesn’t mean anything. It’s just a tax due date. I see you already received your on 3/16/22.

Thank you Katie, should I reach out to IRS being I haven’t received the remainder of my Child due to an error my Tax personnel made when filing?

You’re so welcome.  I can see a full page you posted. Either child tax or stimulus payment mostly or other you claimed. If you have a question about reduced refund, you need to call tax offset, 800-304-3107. Are you able to tell me what the codes 570 and 572 mean and the dates that are displayed?

1 coin

570 means a freeze code has been placed on the account that holds the from being issued and I saw there was 571 on your transcript says it’s resolved. Adjusted.

So the amount next to 846 is what you receive? Because mine is different from my expected amount

1 coin

Yes, that is correct. I’m still confused. I also see a code 766 with a negative value of $3000 and a date of 4/15/2022. My tax person fixed the error he made initially on form 8812 for the Advanced Child tax credits so I’m assuming that they’ll me a being I have $3000 left to claim for the child credit. It’s all confusing.

Hi Angela. 766 is mostly about child tax claimed. Negative balance means a credit. 4/15/22 is a tax season due date so it’s no special meaning.

There’s no right time but usually morning seems faster so call IRS today to make sure your status.

Thank you for that. I received a notice from the IRS on March 28, 2022 regarding the inaccurate information that was input on form 8812 in regards to the advanced child tax and what was received from July 2021-Dec 2021. Do you recommend I reach out to the IRS to ensure that the balance due to me which is 3000 will be deposited since my tax personnel fixed the error that was initially made when he processed my taxes? Please advise and thank you again in advance.

Hey Angela! I see you're dealing with the same Form 8812 issues that have been plaguing a lot of folks this tax season. The code 766 with a negative amount on 4/15/2022 is actually showing that the IRS processed an adjustment to your Child Tax - the negative means it's a in your favor, not a deduction. Since you mentioned your tax preparer already filed an amended return to fix the Form 8812 error, that $3,000 should eventually be released to you. However, I'd definitely recommend calling the IRS to confirm the timeline, especially since you received that notice in March. The 570/571 codes on your transcript show there was a temporary hold that's been resolved, which is good news. Just be patient with the phone lines - try calling early morning for better luck getting through!

Thanks Connor! That's really helpful clarification. I've been dealing with the same CTC mess this year and it's so confusing trying to decode all these transcript codes. Quick question - when you say "eventually be released," are we talking weeks or months? I'm in a similar boat with an amended 8812 and trying to figure out if I should just wait it out or keep calling. The phone wait times have been brutal lately! 😅
