Mailed Tax Return with Payment - IRS Cashed Checks but Return Shows as Not Received
I have a question about my 2023 tax return situation. I mailed my return back in March 2024 along with my first tax payment in the same envelope. The IRS cashed that check which cleared on March 25th. Then I sent my second payment in June and they cashed it with the check clearing on June 29th, but that second payment isn't showing on my IRS account at all. The weird part is they're still showing my 2023 tax return as 'not received' or 'processing' even though they've cashed both payment checks. This happened to me once before with an amended return and it was a nightmare to resolve. Anyone know why they'd cash my checks but claim they haven't received my return, and why the second payment isn't showing up in my account?

This is actually a common IRS disconnect right now. Their payment processing and return processing systems aren't properly synced. Don't assume they're actually working on your return. The fact they cashed your checks means nothing about your return status. You need to get confirmation your actual return was received. Call them directly and get a confirmation number for your inquiry. Their system is backed up, but that doesn't mean you should wait around hoping it resolves itself.

•Just to add a bit of clarity here - what happens is the payment processing center and the return processing center are actually separate facilities! 😅 Your checks go to a bank lockbox operation that processes payments quickly (they want that money!), while paper returns go to a different processing center that's still digging out from backlogs. Not the most efficient system, I know...

I went through something perhaps similar last year. My mailed return seemed to disappear into the void, though they did cash my check rather quickly. I waited, somewhat anxiously, for about 4 months before I could get any confirmation that my return was actually in their system. What eventually happened was that my return suddenly appeared as "processing" after nearly 5 months. It seems like they might be processing payments and returns completely separately, and there could possibly be quite a significant delay before the systems sync up properly.

•Omg same here! Took forever for my return to show up in the system but they cashed my check like lightning fast. Tbh the IRS is running on tech from the stone age so I'm not surprised anymore.

•Did you end up getting any penalties or interest charges during that waiting period? I'm worried that even though they cashed my checks, they might claim I paid late since the return isn't showing as received.

•Paper returns are backlogged. Been this way for years. Still using outdated systems. Keep proof of mailing. Cancelled checks are evidence. Take screenshots of your account now. Document everything. Helps later if problems arise.

I'm going through the EXACT same thing and it's driving me CRAZY! I mailed my return in February and they cashed my check right away but my return is still showing as "not received" in July! I finally got my hands on my tax transcript using https://taxr.ai and it helped me understand what was actually happening. The transcript showed my payment was processed but my return was in a holding pattern. The site explained all the codes and what they meant for my situation. I was SO FRUSTRATED with the IRS website that showed nothing useful, but at least now I understand what's happening and what to expect next.

I had this happen in 2022 and it turned into a much bigger headache than it needed to be. Here's what I learned: • The IRS has separate systems for payments vs returns • Paper returns can take 6-8 months to process currently • They won't tell you there's a problem until much later • If you don't document everything, you could end up with penalties I waited too long assuming they were handling it, and ended up with a CP59 notice claiming I never filed. Had to send proof of mailing, copies of everything, and it still took months to resolve. I'm so relieved I switched to e-filing after that nightmare!

According to Internal Revenue Manual section 3.30.123, payments received with returns should be processed and credited to your account even if the return is still in the processing queue. Per Notice 2024-05, the IRS is still experiencing significant delays with paper-filed returns. If you need to confirm the status of your return, I would recommend using Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) to get through to an IRS agent quickly. I've found that under Treasury Regulation 301.6402-3, having a record of your payments can establish filing intent, but you'll need to speak with an agent to ensure your return is properly associated with those payments.

The IRS is like a restaurant where the host seats you but never tells the waiter you're there. Your money goes straight to the bank, but your paperwork sits in a pile waiting for someone to notice it. Best thing to do is get proof of everything - certified mail receipts, copies of checks, and printouts of your account. Then be prepared to send it all again when they inevitably claim they never got it.

•Correct assessment. IRS payment processing operates on EFTPS platform while return processing uses SCRIPS. These systems reconcile during Master File updates, typically on 2-week cycles. Your Account 806 credits (payments) post independently from return processing status. I experienced this disconnect last year and resolved it by requesting Account Transcript via Form 4506-T, which showed payment posting despite return showing as not received.

•I think I might be experiencing something similar... I'm a bit worried about potential penalties if they don't properly connect my payments to my return. Has anyone had issues with the IRS charging penalties even when they've cashed your checks? I'm wondering if I should maybe file again electronically, but I'm concerned that might just complicate things further.

•@Miguel Harvey Don t'file again electronically - that will definitely create a duplicate return issue that s'even harder to resolve! The IRS won t'charge you penalties for late payment if they ve'already cashed your checks. Your payment date is established by when they processed the checks, not when they finally get around to processing your return. Just keep all your documentation cancelled (checks, bank statements, certified mail receipts and) wait it out. If you get any penalty notices later, you can dispute them with proof that you paid on time.

I'm dealing with something very similar right now! Filed my 2023 return in April 2024, they cashed my payment check within two weeks, but my return is still showing as "not received" on the IRS website. It's been almost a year and I'm getting really anxious about it. Reading through these responses is actually reassuring - I had no idea their payment and return processing systems were so disconnected. I've been keeping all my documentation (certified mail receipt, copy of the cashed check, etc.) but I'm wondering if I should be more proactive about calling them or if I should just continue waiting. Has anyone here had success getting through to an actual IRS agent recently, and if so, what information did they need to verify your situation?

•@Jamal Brown I ve'been following this thread closely since I m'new here and dealing with something similar! From what I m'reading, it sounds like calling them might be worth it just to get a confirmation number for your inquiry. Several people mentioned that the payment processing and return processing are completely separate systems, so even though they cashed your check, your return might still be sitting in a processing queue somewhere. I d'definitely keep all that documentation you mentioned - the certified mail receipt and cashed check are going to be your best friends if this drags on. Have you tried checking your tax transcript online? A few people mentioned that sometimes shows more detailed info than the basic Where "s'My Refund tool."

•@Jamal Brown I had success calling them about 3 months ago using the early morning strategy - called right at 7am when they opened. You ll'need your SSN, exact filing date, and the amount of your payment. They asked for the check number and clearing date too. The agent was actually helpful and gave me a confirmation number for my inquiry. She explained that even though my return wasn t'showing as received, it was actually in their system just waiting to be processed. She said to expect another 2-3 months but that my payment date was locked in from when they cashed my check. Definitely worth the call for peace of mind! @Freya Johansen is right about the transcript - it showed way more detail than the basic status tool.

•@Jamal Brown I m'also new to this community and dealing with a similar situation - filed my return in March, they cashed my check in April, but my return still shows as not "received. Reading" through all these responses has been really eye-opening about how disconnected their systems are! Based on what others have shared, it seems like calling early in the morning right (at 7am gives) you the best chance of getting through. Have your SSN, filing date, payment amount, and check clearing date ready. @Mei Zhang s experience'sounds encouraging - getting that confirmation number and explanation from an agent would definitely help with the anxiety of not knowing what s happening.'I m planning'to call this week myself. It s frustrating'but at least we re not'alone in this!

•@Jamal Brown Welcome to the community! I m'also pretty new here and this thread has been incredibly helpful - I had no idea so many people were dealing with this same issue. Your situation sounds almost identical to mine except I filed in May and they cashed my check in June. The anxiety is real! From what everyone s'shared, it definitely seems worth calling them. @Mei Zhang s advice'about calling right at 7am sounds solid, and having all your documentation ready SSN, filing (date, payment amount, check details will probably) make the call go smoother. @Yuki Ito mentioned they re planning to'call this week too - maybe you could update us on how it goes? It s strangely comforting'to know we re all in'this together dealing with their disconnected systems!

I'm new to this community but wanted to share my experience since I'm going through something very similar! I filed my 2023 return in February 2024 and the IRS cashed my payment check within 3 weeks, but my return has been showing as "not received" for almost a year now. Reading through all these responses has been incredibly reassuring - I had no idea their payment and return processing systems were so completely separate! It explains so much about why they can cash checks lightning fast but take forever to acknowledge they received your actual return. I've been keeping detailed records (certified mail receipts, copies of cashed checks, screenshots of my online account) based on the advice here. This thread has convinced me I need to call them early Monday morning right at 7am to get a confirmation number for my inquiry. It's frustrating but at least now I understand what's happening and that I'm not alone in this situation. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences!

•Welcome to the community @Owen Jenkins! Your situation sounds exactly like what so many of us are dealing with - it's almost like there's a playbook for IRS dysfunction at this point! The fact that you filed in February and they still haven't acknowledged receiving your return after cashing your check is absolutely maddening, but you're definitely not alone. I'm also relatively new here and this thread has been a goldmine of information. The early morning call strategy seems to be the consensus - @Mei Zhang s'success story gives me hope that we can actually get some answers. Make sure you have all those details ready SSN, (filing date, payment amount, check clearing date when) you call Monday. Keep us posted on how it goes!
