IRS Tax Topic 203: How to find out exact child support offset amount from refund?
Hey everyone, I'm trying to figure out my tax refund situation. I know they took some for child support, but I'm not sure how much. I've got tax topic 203 on my account, which I guess means they reduced my refund for some debts. I checked my transcript but it doesn't show the amount they took. Anyone know how I can find out exactly how much they deducted and when I'll get what's left?

Ugh, been there done that. The IRS can be such a pain when it comes to this stuff. Have you tried calling them directly? They should be able to give you the exact amount they took for child support.

Pro tip: call right when they open. You might have better luck getting through.

Or try calling later in the day, like an hour before they close. Sometimes that works too.

Tax topic 203 is a real headache. Here's what I know: • It means your refund was reduced to pay other debts (like child support in your case) • The IRS should send you a notice explaining the offset • You can request a detailed offset statement from the Treasury Offset Program • Your state child support agency might have more info Hope this helps! Let me know if you need more details on any of these steps.

This is super helpful. I'm in a similar boat and had no idea about the offset statement. You're a lifesaver! 🙏

I found a way to get someone on the phone. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c

Sounds too good to be true. Does it really work?

Yeah, it actually does. I was skeptical at first too, but it saved me hours of hold time.

$20 seems steep just to make a phone call. Is it worth it?

For me it was. Time is money, and I wasted way more than $20 worth of time trying to get through on my own.

Have you considered reaching out to your local Taxpayer Advocate Service? They might be able to help you navigate this and get the info you need.
