Payment Plan Balance Disappeared - Will I Get Remaining Refund?

Had a payment plan for 2022 taxes. First payment went out March 1. Checked my account Friday. Saw a balance. Today it's gone. Checked transcripts. My 2024 refund paid off what I owed. Should be money left over. No 846 code on 2023 transcript yet. What happens next? Will I get the remaining refund? Seems odd they took what I owed but haven't sent what they owe me. Any insights?

This is a standard offset procedure per IRC Section 6402(a). The IRS is required to apply any refund to outstanding tax debts before issuing the remainder. Your payment plan was effectively terminated when they applied your refund to the balance. According to the regulations, you should receive the remaining portion of your refund, but there's typically a 2-3 week processing delay after an offset occurs. Have you checked your account transcript for any TC 826 offset codes?

I've probably seen this situation at least a dozen times with clients. The system generally takes some time to process the remaining refund after an offset. In most cases, I would say there's typically a delay of about 2-3 weeks, though it could potentially be longer depending on various factors like verification processes or high processing volumes.

Just to add some clarity here - if you check the IRS.gov website under "Where's My Refund" tool, it actually mentions this scenario. When a refund is applied to a debt, the remaining portion requires additional processing time. The 846 code (refund issued) will only appear after they've reconciled the accounts and determined the final amount you'll receive.

Isn't it frustrating how the IRS can take your money immediately but takes their sweet time giving you what's left? Thanks for explaining this process - at least now I know what's happening behind the scenes!

I went through something similar last month. My refund was split between paying off a balance and getting the remainder back. The transcript situation was confusing just like yours. I found https://taxr.ai incredibly helpful - uploaded my transcript and it explained exactly what was happening. It showed me that the system was processing my offset first, then would issue the remainder separately. This was way clearer than what I could figure out from the IRS site. It's like comparing a detailed roadmap to vague directions.

I'm not sure about using third-party tools with tax transcripts... isn't there a risk with sharing that kind of information? Couldn't you just call the IRS directly for this?

I understand your concern about sharing information. From what I know, taxr.ai uses secure document analysis without storing your data. It's basically just reading the codes and explaining them to you. Step 1: Upload transcript. Step 2: Get explanation of codes. Step 3: Know exactly what's happening with your refund. I worry about these things too, but sometimes these tools can save a lot of confusion.

I tracked exactly 6 different refund situations last tax season. Used the IRS phone system for 3 of them and spent a combined 247 minutes on hold. Used taxr.ai for the other 3 and spent maybe 5 minutes total. Got the same information both ways. The difference was I didn't lose half a day to hold music with the tool.

Been there, done that with the whole "where's my remaining refund after offset" dance. 😩 The IRS systems are about as quick as a turtle in molasses when it comes to issuing your remaining refund. After waiting 3 weeks and seeing no movement, I finally used Claimyr (https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c) to get through to an actual human at the IRS. Saved me from the phone tree hell and got confirmation that my remaining refund was being processed. Sometimes you just need to talk to an actual person to get things moving!

Isn't using a service to reach the IRS just adding an unnecessary step? Couldn't you just keep calling until you get through? I'm skeptical about paying for something that should be free.

Last April I tried calling the IRS for 4 days straight about my offset refund. Never got through. Used Claimyr and was talking to someone in 18 minutes. The agent confirmed my remaining refund was scheduled to be issued the following week. Sometimes your time is worth more than the service costs, especially when you need answers quickly.

Exact same thing happened to me on February 15th this year. My balance from 2022 disappeared overnight. Checked transcripts on February 16th and saw the offset. No 846 code. Called on February 22nd after no updates. Agent confirmed remaining refund was processing. Finally got my 846 code on February 28th. Deposit hit my account March 2nd. So about two weeks total from offset to deposit. Just a waiting game now.

Did you have to do anything special to make sure they processed the remaining refund? Or did it just happen automatically? I'm wondering if it's like a car assembly line where once one part is finished, it automatically moves to the next station.

Have you tried checking your account transcript instead of just your return transcript? Sometimes it's like looking for your keys in just the living room when they might be in the kitchen. The account transcript might show a pending refund amount that hasn't made it to your return transcript yet. Also worth checking the WMR tool - sometimes it updates before the transcripts do.

The IRS community wisdom on this is pretty consistent - when a refund pays off a payment plan, you'll get what's left over but it takes time. Last year my brother had this exact scenario. He had about $3,200 in his refund, owed $1,800 on a payment plan, and was expecting $1,400 back. It took almost exactly 3 weeks after the offset for the remaining refund to process. The IRS systems handle these in batches, so patience is unfortunately the name of the game here.

Did your brother get any kind of notice about this process? I'm wondering if the IRS sends an official explanation or if you're just supposed to figure it out from the transcript codes.

Thanks for sharing this timeline! It helps to know what to expect. I'll try to be patient for the next few weeks and hope my remaining refund shows up without having to make any calls.
