Account Transcript Shows 2023 But Nothing For 2024 - Waiting After Tax Payment
Still no transcript update on my 2024 return 😫 My account transcript now shows 2023 but both 2024 sections have nothing. I did have last year's taxes to pay which I know is the hold up.. but that seems to have been taken care of since I can't see the balance or make payment options for it anymore on IRS.gov… so hopefully I get an update soon.. Anyone who needed to pay something with their federal taxes this year - how long did it take to receive the rest of your refund after payment cleared?

This is actually somewhat common when you have a balance due from a previous year. The IRS typically processes these returns with a bit more scrutiny, which might be why your transcript is showing this pattern. In my experience, it usually takes about 2-3 weeks after the payment has been applied for the system to fully update and process the current year's refund. It's possible, though not guaranteed, that you'll see movement on your transcript within the next 7-10 days if your payment has indeed been processed.

I'm in a similar situation - paid my 2023 balance on March 12th but still nothing on my 2024 transcript. Does the IRS actually tell you when they've applied the payment to your account? Or do you just have to keep checking?

Is it accurate that they'll hold exactly 100% of the refund until the prior year is settled? My situation is I owed $2,431 for 2023 and my 2024 refund is supposed to be $3,876. Will they just subtract what I owed and send the difference, or do they hold everything until they confirm my payment cleared?

You might want to try pulling your Account Transcript instead of just the Return Transcript. The Account Transcript shows all transactions on your account including payments, whereas the Return Transcript only shows the information from your filed return. It's kind of like comparing your bank statement (Account Transcript) to your paycheck stub (Return Transcript) - they show different things. If your payment was applied, you should see a transaction code 570 (additional account action pending) followed by a 971 (notice issued) and eventually a 846 (refund issued).

Omg thx for this tip! Just checked my acct transcript and saw the 570/971 codes that weren't there yesterday. Looks like things are finally moving!!

This distinction between Account and Return transcripts is crucial and often overlooked. I've been frustrated for weeks looking at the wrong transcript type. The IRS interface really should make this difference more apparent to users unfamiliar with their system architecture.

To add some clarity here: Transaction Code 570 specifically indicates that the IRS has frozen your refund temporarily while they resolve an issue. Code 971 means they've sent you a notice about it. The resolution typically follows within 2-3 weeks, assuming no additional issues are found.

I was in the exact same boat last month! Had a balance due from 2023 that I paid off, but my 2024 refund was stuck in limbo. After waiting for 3 weeks with no updates, I finally got tired of checking WMR every day and used Claimyr (https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c) to get through to an IRS agent. Got connected in about 15 minutes when I had previously been unable to get through at all. The agent confirmed my payment had been processed but the system hadn't updated my refund status. They manually released my refund and I got it 8 days later. Sometimes you just need to talk to a human to get things moving!

I'm always nervous about these services that claim to help with IRS stuff... did you have to give them any personal info? Seems risky when dealing with tax matters.

I went through this exact situation last year. According to the IRS website (specifically the "Where's My Refund" FAQ section), when you have a prior year balance, they typically hold your current refund for 2-3 weeks after processing your payment. In my case, I paid my 2022 balance on February 18, 2023, and my 2023 refund was deposited on March 11th - so about 3 weeks later. The transcript usually updates about 4-5 days before the actual deposit happens. I'd recommend checking your transcript every Tuesday and Friday morning, as those seem to be the days when the IRS batch updates their systems.

This is super helpful! Is there a specific time on Tuesdays and Fridays when they update? I've been checking randomly throughout the day.

Thank you for the detailed timeline! This gives me something concrete to expect instead of just refreshing constantly and driving myself crazy.

Here's what's likely happening with your account: 1. When you file with a prior year balance due, your return gets flagged in the system 2. Your payment needs to fully clear (usually 5-7 business days) 3. The payment then needs to be applied to your account (another 3-5 business days) 4. A review happens to confirm everything is settled (1-3 business days) 5. Your current year refund is then released for processing The fact that you can't see the balance anymore is a good sign. I'd suggest checking your Account Transcript (not Return Transcript) daily. Look specifically for Transaction Code 806 (payment applied) followed by a TC 570 (hold) and then TC 571 (hold released). Once you see a TC 846, that's your refund being issued.

Think of your tax account like a house with a lien on it - nothing moves until that lien is cleared! I was in the same boat - owed $1,200 for 2023 and was due a $3,400 refund for 2024. My payment cleared on March 3rd, and like you, I noticed the "pay balance" option disappeared from my account. Exactly 16 days later, my transcript updated with a refund date. The money hit my account 2 days after that. The clock is ticking, but it sounds like you're already on the right track - when that payment option disappears, it's usually just a matter of days before things start moving again!
