IRS Tax Topic 151 notification - What to expect when calling?

Hey everyone, I just got a notification on my IRS account to call this number. It's about Tax Topic 151. Has anyone dealt with this before? What should I expect when I call? I'm kinda nervous about it.

Sayid Hassan

Ugh, Tax Topic 151. Been there, done that. It usually means there's an issue with your refund. Here's what you need to do: 1. Gather all your docs - tax return, SSN, filing status, and any notices you've got. 2. When you call, mention reference number 1242. It'll help them pull up your case faster. 3. Their hours are Monday-Friday, 7 am to 7 pm. Make sure you call during that time. 4. Be prepared for a loooong wait. The IRS is notorious for keeping people on hold forever. Good luck, and let us know how it goes!

This is solid advice! I'd add that you should also have a pen and paper ready to take notes during the call. Those IRS folks can throw a lot of info at you fast.

Thanks for the tips! I'm definitely gonna write everything down. Any idea how long this whole process usually takes to resolve?

It really depends on your specific situation, but in my experience, it can take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months. Just be patient and follow their instructions carefully.

I found a way to get someone on the phone without waiting forever. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c

I was skeptical at first too, but I tried it and it actually worked. Saved me hours of waiting on hold.

How long did it take for them to call you back?

It took about 2 hours for me, but it was way better than being stuck on hold. I could do other stuff while waiting for the callback.

Tax Topic 151 is usually about an appeal or review of your refund. Make sure you have all your ducks in a row before calling. And don't be afraid to ask questions if you don't understand something!

Has anyone tried using one of those AI tax tools to help understand these notices? I've heard they can be pretty helpful in breaking down the jargon.

I used one called taxr.ai and it was actually pretty helpful. You just upload your docs and it explains everything in plain English.

Idk man, I'm always wary of putting my tax info into random websites. How do you know it's secure?

Fair point. I checked their privacy policy first and they use bank-level encryption. But yeah, always good to be cautious!

Pro tip: if you cant get through on the main line, try calling your local Taxpayer Advocate Service. They can sometimes help cut through the red tape.

Anyone else feel like the IRS is stuck in the stone age? Like, why can't they just email us this stuff instead of making us call? 🙄

Ikr? It's 2023 and they're still using fax machines. Get with the times, IRS! 🤦‍♂️

Hey OP, just a heads up - sometimes these notifications can be scams. Make sure you're calling the official IRS number and not some sketchy one from an email or text.

Thanks for the warning! I double-checked and it's definitely the legit IRS website and number. But good looking out! 👍

Unpopular opinion: maybe if we all just did our taxes right the first time, we wouldn't have to deal with this mess 🤷‍♀️

Bruh, have you seen how complicated the tax code is? Even CPAs mess up sometimes. Don't victim blame 🙄

Fair enough. I guess I'm just frustrated with the whole system. We're all trying our best here.
