Got an IRS fine notice, call disconnected. What to do next?
Hey everyone, I just got a notice from the IRS about a fine. Has anyone dealt with this before? I'm not sure what to do next and could use some advice. The call got disconnected when I tried to reach out to them earlier. Any tips on how to handle this or what I should expect?

Ugh, dealing with the IRS is such a pain. I had a similar issue last year. First thing you should do is carefully read through the notice they sent you. It should explain why you're being fined and what your options are. Don't panic, sometimes these things can be resolved pretty easily.

•Thanks for the advice. I'll take a closer look at the notice. Did you end up having to pay the full amount they asked for?

•In my case, I actually didn't have to pay anything. Turned out it was a mistake on their end. But every situation is different, so don't get your hopes up too much. Just be prepared to explain your side of things.

•This is why I always keep ALL my tax documents organized. Makes dealing with the IRS so much easier when you have everything at your fingertips.

I found a way to actually get someone on the phone at the IRS. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video explaining it: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c

•Sounds too good to be true. Is this legit? Has anyone else tried it?

•idk man, seems kinda sketchy. Why should we have to pay to talk to the IRS? The system is so broken 🤦♂️

•I get where you're coming from, but for me, time is money. I'd rather pay $20 than waste half a day on hold. But to each their own!

Listen up, cause I've been down this road before. Here's what you need to do: 1. Don't ignore the notice. That'll only make things worse. 2. Gather all your relevant tax documents for the year in question. 3. If you can afford it, consider hiring a tax professional or CPA. They can often negotiate with the IRS on your behalf. 4. If the fine is due to an honest mistake, you can request a penalty abatement. The IRS is sometimes willing to waive penalties for first-time offenders. 5. If you can't pay the full amount, look into setting up a payment plan with the IRS. 6. Keep detailed records of all communications with the IRS. Remember, the IRS isn't out to get you. They're usually willing to work with you if you're proactive and honest. Good luck!

•Wow, thank you so much for this detailed advice! I'll definitely look into the penalty abatement option. Do you know how long the process usually takes?

•It can vary, but in my experience, it usually takes about 2-3 months. Just be patient and persistent. And don't forget to follow up if you don't hear back!

have you tried turning it off and on again? 🤣 jk jk. but seriously, the IRS website has some decent info if you can navigate through all the bureaucratic bs. might be worth checking out before you spend hours trying to reach a human

Oof, IRS fines are the worst. I'm in the same boat rn. Been trying to get thru to them for weeks. Let me know if you figure out a good way to contact them!

Whatever you do, DON'T ignore it. My cousin did that and ended up owing waaaaay more. Better to face it head on, even if it sucks.

•💯 this. Ignoring the IRS is like ignoring a toothache. It only gets worse (and more expensive) 😬
