Got CP063 notice from IRS - What to do next? Need advice ASAP!

Hey everyone, I just got a CP063 notice from the IRS. Has anyone dealt with this before? I'm not sure what to do next or if I need to upload any documents. Any advice would be really appreciated!

Ugh, I got one of those last year. It's basically saying there's a problem with your return and they need more info. Have you tried logging into your IRS account online? Sometimes you can see more details there.

Thanks for the tip! I'll try logging in and see what I can find. Did you end up having to send in any additional documents?

Yeah, I had to send in some W-2s and a corrected 1099. It was a pain, but once I sent everything in, it got resolved pretty quick. Just make sure you keep copies of everything you send!

logging into the IRS account is hit or miss tho. sometimes it works, sometimes it doesnt. good luck OP! šŸ€

CP063 is usually about unreported income. Did you forget to include any 1099s or other income on your return? That's often the culprit.

I found a way to actually get someone on the phone about this. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/Jc9x-gysK0

Sounds too good to be true. Does it really work? šŸ¤”

It does! I was skeptical at first too, but I got through to an agent in about an hour. Saved me so much time and frustration.

$20 seems steep just to make a phone call. Is it really worth it?

For me it was. I spent hours trying to get through on my own with no luck. This way I could go about my day and just wait for the call. Time is money, ya know? šŸ’Æ

Whatever you do, don't ignore it! I made that mistake and ended up with penalties. Respond as soon as you can, even if it's just to ask for more time.

Oh no, that sounds awful! How much were the penalties? I definitely don't want to make the same mistake.

It was about 5% of what I owed for each month it was late. Adds up fast! 😭 Don't be like me, deal with it ASAP!

Here's what you need to know about CP063 notices: • It's issued when the IRS believes you have unreported income • They compare info from employers and financial institutions to what's on your return • You have 30 days to respond from the date on the notice • You can either agree and pay, or dispute it if you think it's wrong • If disputing, gather all your income documents (W-2s, 1099s, etc.) • You can request a payment plan if you agree but can't pay in full • Consider getting professional help if it's a large amount or complicated situation Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions.

Wow, thank you so much for this detailed breakdown! This is incredibly helpful. I'm going to start gathering all my documents right away.

This is great info! Quick question - do you know if the 30 days is calendar days or business days? I'm cutting it close 😬

0 coins

It's 30 calendar days. If you're cutting it close, you can call and ask for an extension. They're usually pretty reasonable if you explain your situation.

Preach! šŸ™Œ It's like they make it complicated on purpose. We need serious tax reform in this country.

Has anyone tried using one of those AI tax assistants? I heard they can help interpret these notices and give advice. Might be worth a shot if you're stuck.

I tried one last month. It was okay for basic stuff, but for something like this, I'd still want to talk to a real person or tax pro.

Protip: Always keep a folder with ALL your tax docs, even the ones you think you don't need. You never know when the IRS is gonna come knocking! šŸ“šŸ’¼

I went through this exact same situation a few months ago! The CP063 can be really stressful, but here's what worked for me: First, don't panic - you have time to respond. Second, gather ALL your income documents (W-2s, 1099s, bank statements, etc.) and compare them to what you reported. In my case, I had missed a small 1099-MISC from some freelance work. Once I found the discrepancy, I filed an amended return (1040X) and included the missing income. The whole process took about 6 weeks to resolve. If you can't find any missing income and think the IRS is wrong, you can dispute it, but make sure you have solid documentation. Good luck! šŸ¤ž
