IRS Penalty Abatement & Delayed Refund: Need Advice ASAP!

Hey everyone, I'm in a bit of a pickle with the IRS and could use some advice. I've always filed my taxes on time, but this year I hit a rough patch and couldn't pay when I filed. Now I'm dealing with penalties and I'm wondering if anyone has experience with getting them waived? Also, I filed my federal return over 21 days ago and still haven't seen any updates on the IRS website about my refund. Anyone else dealing with similar issues or have any tips on how to handle this?

Oof, dealing with the IRS is never fun. For the penalties, you might qualify for a one-time penalty abatement if this is your first time being late. Call them and explain your situation, emphasize your good history. As for the refund, unfortunately delays are pretty common these days. Keep checking the Where's My Refund tool, but you might need to call them for more info.

Thanks for the advice! I'll definitely try calling about the penalty abatement. Any tips on actually getting through to a human at the IRS? 😅

Good luck getting anyone on the phone lol. I've been trying for weeks 🤡

Haha yeah, getting through can be a nightmare. Try calling right when they open or just before closing time. And have a good book ready, you'll be on hold for a while! 📚☎️

I found a method to get someone on the phone. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/Jc9x-gysK0

Sounds too good to be true. Does it really work? 🤔

It worked for me! Saved me hours of hold time. Worth every penny imo.

Idk man, paying to talk to the IRS? That's some late stage capitalism right there 💀

I get it, but when you factor in the time saved and stress avoided, it's worth it for some people. To each their own tho!

Listen up, cause I've been down this road before. Here's what you need to do: 1. First-Time Penalty Abatement (FTA): If you've had a clean record for the past 3 years, you can request this. It's not guaranteed, but worth a shot. 2. Reasonable Cause: If FTA doesn't work, argue reasonable cause. Explain your circumstances in detail. Be honest but compelling. 3. For your refund: After 21 days, you can request a trace. Call the IRS or use Form 3911. 4. Document everything: Keep records of all communications with the IRS. 5. Consider getting a tax advocate if things get complicated. Remember, persistence is key. Don't give up! 💪

Have you checked your transcript? Sometimes it shows more info than the Where's My Refund tool. You can access it on the IRS website.

I didn't know about this! Thanks for the tip, I'll check it out.

Plot twist: the IRS is actually a front for a time travel agency. They're not processing returns, they're altering the timeline! 👽🕰️

Lmao that would explain so much 🤣

I want whatever this guy's smoking 💨

Pro tip: If you're having trouble paying, look into an installment agreement. You can set up a payment plan with the IRS to pay off your tax debt over time. It won't help with the penalties, but it can make the overall payment more manageable.

Anyone else feel like the tax system is intentionally complicated just to mess with us? 🤔 Like, why can't this stuff be simpler?

Preach! 🙌 It's a conspiracy to keep accountants employed lol

For real tho, other countries have way simpler systems. We're living in the stone age 🦕
