IRS Innocent Spouse Relief: Wrong department connection issue, need advice ASAP!
Hey everyone, I'm having trouble with the IRS and need some advice on Innocent Spouse Relief. I've been trying to get through to the right department but keep getting connected to the wrong one. Has anyone gone through this process before? What should I expect? Any tips on how to navigate this mess?

Ugh, dealing with the IRS is such a nightmare. I went through something similar last year. It took me FOREVER to get to the right department. Have you tried calling early in the morning? Sometimes that helps.

•Thanks for the tip! I'll try calling first thing tomorrow. How long did the whole process take for you?

•Honestly, it felt like an eternity 😩 Took about 3 months from start to finish. Just keep at it and document EVERYTHING.

I found a method to get someone on the phone. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c

•I get the skepticism, but it seriously saved me hours of frustration. Worth every penny imo.

•Just tried it and it actually worked! Got through to an agent in like 30 minutes instead of being on hold all day. 💯

Innocent Spouse Relief can be tricky. Make sure you have all your documentation in order before you call. They'll want to see proof that you didn't know about the underreported income or erroneous items on the joint return. Here's what you need to prepare: • Copy of the joint tax return in question • Any IRS notices you've received • Proof of separate residences (if applicable) • Financial records showing you didn't benefit from the underreported income • Any documentation showing you were misled or didn't have knowledge of the issues Be patient and persistent. The IRS moves slow, but if you qualify, it's worth the hassle. Good luck!

Have you considered hiring a tax attorney? They can navigate the system much faster and might save you money in the long run.

•I've thought about it, but I'm worried about the cost. Any idea what the average fees are for something like this?

•It varies, but expect anywhere from $2000-$5000 depending on the complexity of your case. Some offer free consultations tho, might be worth checking out.

•yikes those prices 😳 maybe try a CPA first? They're usually cheaper and can often handle these cases too
