Need help with IRS document amendment and extension - which department to contact?
Hey everyone, I'm having some trouble with the IRS. I need to amend some documents and get an extension, but I'm not sure which department to contact. I tried calling but ended up in the wrong place. Has anyone dealt with this before? Any advice on how to reach the right people or what steps I should take next?

Ugh, dealing with the IRS is such a pain. I had a similar issue last year. Have you tried using their online portal? Sometimes it's easier to submit amendments digitally rather than over the phone.

•Thanks for the suggestion! I'll check out the online portal. Did you find it pretty straightforward to use?

•It's not the most user-friendly thing in the world, but still better than being on hold for hours 🙄 Just make sure you have all your docs ready before you start!

I found a method to get someone on the phone. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's the link: https://claimyr.com

•Sounds too good to be true. Is this legit? Anyone else tried it?

•Totally legit! I was skeptical at first too, but it saved me hours of hold time. Worth every penny imho

Listen up, folks. Here's what you need to do: 1. First, determine which form you need to amend. For most people, it's Form 1040-X. 2. Gather all necessary documents, including your original return and any new information. 3. Fill out the form carefully. Double-check everything! 4. If you need an extension, use Form 4868. This gives you an automatic 6-month extension. 5. For specific questions, call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040. Be prepared for a wait. 6. Consider using a tax professional if things get complicated. Remember, amendments can take up to 16 weeks to process. Start early!

•Wow, thank you so much for this detailed breakdown! This is incredibly helpful. I'll definitely start with Form 1040-X and go from there.

I'm in the same boat, been trying to get this sorted for weeks. The system is so broken, it's ridiculous. Good luck, OP!

Pro tip: if you can, visit a local IRS office in person. Sometimes face-to-face is the best way to get things sorted quickly.

•This! I did this last month and got everything resolved in one visit. Just make sure to book an appointment online first.

Anyone else think its crazy that we need whole forums just to figure out how to talk to our own government? 🤔 Like, shouldn't this be easier?
