IRS Delay: 2024 Return Still Processing After 2 Months, Previous Audit Impact?

I filed my taxes for 2024 like two months ago and still haven't heard anything back. Has anyone else experienced this? I'm starting to get worried because I had an audit on my 2021 return and I'm wondering if that's causing problems with my current return. Any advice on what I should do or say when I call the IRS? I'm thinking about asking if the old audit is slowing things down, but I'm not sure how to phrase it. Help!

I found a way to solve IRS tax return processing delays, watch this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Sy2-Yy_wGY

Have you checked if there were any errors on your return? Sometimes small mistakes can cause big delays. Might be worth double-checking everything.

I triple-checked before submitting, but maybe I missed something. I'll look again. Thanks for the suggestion!

Good idea. I once transposed two numbers in my SSN and it took months to sort out ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ

Even minor errors can lead to major delays. Double-checking can save a lot of time.

I'm in the same boat, filed in February and still waiting. It's so frustrating! Hang in there, OP.

Plot twist: the IRS is actually run by a bunch of sloths ๐Ÿฆฅ That's why everything takes forever lmao

Haha, love the humor! But seriously, it's a bureaucratic maze. Patience is key.

It seems like your audit from 2021 could be affecting the processing time for your 2024 return. When you contact the IRS, be sure to have all necessary documents and your Social Security Number ready to streamline the inquiry process. Mention that you had a previous audit and inquire if this could be causing any delays. Regarding calling the IRS, using services like Claimyr can help get you in touch with an agent faster, but keep in mind that there's a fee involved. It's a matter of weighing the cost against the potential benefit of resolving your issue more quickly. Also, consider using the Taxpayer Advocate Service if you're experiencing significant delaysโ€”they can be very helpful. Lastly, regularly check the IRS Where's My Refund tool for updates, even if it seems unhelpful, as status updates can sometimes change. Good luck!

Unpopular opinion: maybe we should just abolish taxes altogether and go back to bartering with chickens and goats ๐Ÿ”๐Ÿ

Funny, but taxes are essential for infrastructure and public services. However, the process could definitely be more efficient!

Pro tip: If you owe them money, they process it lightning fast. But if they owe you? Prepare to wait until the heat death of the universe ๐Ÿ™ƒ

So true, it's like they have a sixth sense for receiving payments while refund processes are a different story.

Have you tried checking the "Where's My Refund" tool on the IRS website? It usually gives you a status update on your return.

Yeah, I checked but it just says "still processing". No other info ๐Ÿ˜•

Same here. That tool is useless, just tells you what you already know smh

It can be frustrating, but sometimes it's best to just keep checking. Once I checked mine every few days and eventually got an update.

Ugh, the IRS is such a mess. I've been waiting on my refund for 3 months now. It's ridiculous how long they take ๐Ÿคฌ

Guys, I think I figured it out. The IRS isn't slow, they're just using Internet Explorer to process our returns ๐Ÿ’ป๐Ÿข

That would explain the lag! Seriously though, perhaps they need a tech upgrade.

The audit on your 2021 return could definitely be affecting your current return processing. When you call, make sure to mention it and ask if it's causing any delays. Here's a script you could use: "Hi, I filed my 2024 tax return two months ago and haven't received any updates. I had an audit on my 2021 return. Could that be causing delays with my current return? If so, what steps can I take to resolve this?" Also, make sure you have your Social Security Number and any relevant tax documents ready when you call. Good luck!

Great advice! I'd also suggest asking for a specific timeline or next steps. Sometimes they can give you a rough estimate of when to expect an update.

Yes, mentioning the audit is crucial. Also, ask if there are any specific documents they need to move things along.

Serious answer: If you're experiencing financial hardship due to the delay, make sure to mention that when you call. Sometimes they can expedite processing in those cases.

That's good to know, thanks. It's not dire yet, but if it goes on much longer it might be.

Make sure to have documentation ready to support your financial hardship claim if you decide to mention it.

Have you considered reaching out to your local Taxpayer Advocate Service? They can sometimes help if you're experiencing significant delays or hardship due to your refund being held up.
