IRS Message: "Return Closed" After My Response - No Explanation About Refund Status (02/16/2025)

Got this message from IRS on 02/17/2025 at 8:59 PM through their Secure Message Center and im really confused. Here's exactly what it said: "Greetings, We have received your response in the above referenced case, and we have closed the return. You do not need to respond to this message. Thank you, Input Correction ERS/Rejects" But I still havent gotten my refund. Does this mean im not getting my money or what? This message got me stressed cause I dont understand if closing the return is good or bad. The message came directly from their "Secure Message Center" late at night (8:59 PM) which seems weird timing. And why is it signed by something called "Input Correction ERS/Rejects"? What does that even mean? Is that a department or something? When I check the message on my phone it shows "9:12" at the top, and there's a "Reply" button at the bottom but they literally said "You do not need to respond to this message." So should I reply or not? The whole thing is super confusing. I've been waiting on my refund and thought I was making progress when they said they "received my response" but now I'm worried that "closed the return" means they've denied me or something. Can someone help me understand what's going on fr. Why would they close it and then not explain what happens with my refund?

This message from the IRS's Input Correction ERS/Rejects team, received at 8:59 PM on February 16, 2025, is actually good news. When they say they've "closed the return," it means they've completed processing the corrections or adjustments that were needed on your tax return. The ERS (Error Resolution System) team handles returns that need manual review or corrections, so this message indicates they've resolved whatever issue prompted their review. The timing of this message is significant - late evening communications from the IRS's automated system typically mean the update will be reflected in their main systems during the next business day's processing cycle. While the message doesn't specifically mention your refund, this type of closure notice usually means your return has cleared this particular hurdle. Your next steps should be to: 1. Check your tax transcript in 2-3 business days 2. Monitor the Where's My Refund tool 3. Watch for any refund deposit within the next 1-2 weeks Since the message specifically states "You do not need to respond," no further action is required from you at this stage of the process.

Hey Chloe! I had the exact same situation last month - got that cryptic "return closed" message from Input Correction ERS/Rejects and was totally panicked thinking they denied my refund. Turns out it's actually a good sign! It means they finished reviewing whatever flagged your return and cleared it for processing. I got my refund about 10 days after that message. The late night timing is normal too - their system sends these automated updates when they complete the review process. Hang tight, your money should be coming soon! 🤞

I got the exact same message from Input Correction ERS/Rejects last month! I was freaking out thinking they denied my refund too but it actually means they finished processing whatever issue they found with your return. The "closed" part just means they completed their review - not that you're denied. I got my refund about 2 weeks after getting that message. The timing seems weird but their automated system sends these updates whenever they finish processing, even late at night. Just keep checking Where's My Refund tool and your bank account - you should see movement soon! 💰

That's so reassuring to hear! I was literally losing sleep over this thinking I messed something up. Two weeks isn't too bad - I can wait that long if it means I'm actually getting my money. Thanks for sharing your experience, it really helps knowing other people went through the same thing 🙏

Hey Chloe! I know this is super stressful but that message is actually good news! I got the exact same one from Input Correction ERS/Rejects about 3 weeks ago and was panicking just like you. "Return closed" doesn't mean denied - it means they finished reviewing whatever issue flagged your return and cleared it for processing. The ERS team handles returns that need manual corrections, so this message means they've resolved the problem. I got my refund deposited exactly 12 days after receiving that message. The late night timing is totally normal for their automated system. Don't reply to the message since they said not to, just keep monitoring Where's My Refund and your bank account. You should see movement within the next 1-2 weeks! 💪

Thank you so much for sharing your experience! This is exactly what I needed to hear. I've been checking my bank account obsessively since I got that message and was starting to think something went wrong. Knowing that you got your refund 12 days later gives me hope. I'll try to be patient and stop stressing about it so much. Really appreciate you taking the time to explain what happened in your case! 🙏

I totally get why you're stressed - I had the exact same panic when I got that message! But everyone here is right, it's actually good news. "Input Correction ERS/Rejects" is just the department that handles returns needing manual review or corrections. When they say "closed the return" it means they finished fixing whatever issue was flagging your return, not that they're denying you. The late night timing is normal for their automated system - they process these updates 24/7. I got my refund about 10 days after getting that same message. Don't reply since they specifically said not to, just keep checking Where's My Refund every few days. Your money should be coming soon! 💰

Wait, are you the same Chloe from the original post? If so, that's awesome that you got your refund! How long did it end up taking from when you got that "return closed" message? I'm in the same boat right now and could use some encouragement 😅

Hey! I went through the exact same thing last year and I know how nerve-wracking that message can be. The "Input Correction ERS/Rejects" department handles returns that need manual review - it's not as scary as it sounds! When they say they've "closed the return," it actually means they've finished processing whatever correction or review was needed and your return is moving forward in the system. The late night timing is totally normal - their automated systems work around the clock to send these updates. I got my message at like 11:47 PM and thought it was weird too, but that's just how their system operates. After I got that same message, my refund showed up in my bank account about 8 business days later. Keep checking the "Where's My Refund" tool every couple days, and you should see it update to show a deposit date soon. Don't stress too much - this is actually progress, not a denial! 🤞💪

This is such a relief to read! I've been checking my bank account like every hour since I got that message and was starting to think I did something wrong on my return. 8 business days isn't too bad at all - I can definitely wait that long knowing it's actually coming. Thanks for breaking down what that department actually does, I had no idea what "Input Correction ERS/Rejects" meant and it sounded so intimidating. Really appreciate you sharing your timeline! 🙏

I'm going through the exact same thing right now! Got that "return closed" message from Input Correction ERS/Rejects two days ago and have been freaking out ever since. Reading all these comments is so reassuring - I had no idea that "closed" actually meant they finished processing the corrections rather than denying my refund. The timing of these messages really is weird (mine came at 2:34 AM) but now I understand it's just their automated system working 24/7. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences and timelines, it's giving me hope that my refund will actually come through in the next week or two! 🤞

0 coins

@CosmicCrusader I totally feel you on the panic! That 2:34 AM timing is so typical of their system - I think they just process these updates whenever they finish reviewing cases, regardless of the hour. The waiting is the hardest part but from what everyone's sharing here, it sounds like we're actually in a good spot once we get that "closed" message. Fingers crossed we both see our refunds hit soon! 🤞💰

I got this exact same message from Input Correction ERS/Rejects about 3 weeks ago and was totally panicking just like you! The wording is super confusing but it's actually good news. When they say "closed the return" it means they finished reviewing whatever issue flagged your return for manual review - not that they're denying you. The ERS team handles returns that need corrections or additional review, so this message means they've resolved whatever the problem was and your return is moving forward. I got my refund deposited exactly 14 days after getting that message. The late night timing is normal for their automated system - mine came at 1:23 AM. Don't reply since they said not to, just keep checking Where's My Refund every few days. Your money should be coming soon! 💰

@Amina Diop Thanks for sharing your timeline! 14 days is pretty reasonable and it s'so helpful to hear from someone who went through the exact same thing. That 1:23 AM timing really shows how their system just processes these updates whenever they finish reviewing cases. I m'definitely going to stop obsessively checking my bank account every few hours and just check Where s'My Refund every couple days like you suggested. Really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience - it s'giving me so much peace of mind! 🙏

I totally understand your stress about that message! I got the exact same "return closed" notification from Input Correction ERS/Rejects last month and was convinced they had denied my refund. Turns out it's actually good news - it means they finished reviewing whatever issue flagged your return and cleared it for processing. The "ERS" stands for Error Resolution System, so they handle returns that need manual corrections or review. When they say "closed" they mean they completed their work on it, not that you're denied. The weird late night timing is totally normal - their automated system sends these updates whenever they finish processing, even at odd hours. I got my refund deposited about 11 days after receiving that message. Don't reply since they specifically said not to, just keep monitoring Where's My Refund and your bank account. Your money should be coming within the next 1-2 weeks! 💰

@Anastasia Ivanova This is exactly what I needed to hear! I ve'been a nervous wreck since getting that message and your explanation about ERS standing for Error Resolution System makes so much sense. It s'crazy how they word these messages in such a confusing way when they could just say we "finished reviewing your return and it s'approved for processing or" something like that. 11 days isn t'bad at all - I can definitely handle waiting that long knowing my refund is actually coming. Thanks for breaking it down so clearly! 🙏

I can relate to your stress about that confusing message! I received the exact same notification from Input Correction ERS/Rejects about 6 weeks ago and had the same panic thinking they denied my refund. But "return closed" actually means they completed whatever review or correction was needed on your return - it's good news, not bad! The ERS department handles returns flagged for manual review, so this message indicates they resolved the issue and your return is moving forward in the system. The late night timing (8:59 PM) is completely normal - their automated system processes these updates 24/7 whenever they finish reviewing cases. I ended up getting my refund deposited 9 days after receiving that message. Since they specifically said not to respond, just don't reply and keep checking Where's My Refund every few days. Your refund should show up within the next week or two! 🙏💰

@CyberSamurai Thank you so much for sharing your experience! 9 days is even faster than some of the other timelines people have shared here. It's such a relief to hear from so many people who went through the exact same thing and got their refunds. I was literally googling "IRS return closed meaning" at 3 AM last night because I was so worried. Your explanation really helps - I had no clue what ERS meant and it sounded so official and scary. I'm going to try to relax and just check Where's My Refund every few days like you suggested instead of obsessing over it every hour 😅

Hey Chloe! I totally get why you're freaking out - that message is super confusing and scary when you first get it. But honestly, you can breathe easy now! I got that exact same "return closed" message from Input Correction ERS/Rejects about a month ago and was having a full panic attack thinking they denied my refund. Turns out it's actually GOOD news! When they say "closed the return" they mean they finished fixing whatever issue was holding up your return - not that you're denied. The ERS team (Error Resolution System) handles returns that need manual review or corrections. So this message basically means "we found the problem, we fixed it, and now your return can move forward for processing." The 8:59 PM timing is totally normal too - their system sends these automated updates whenever they complete their review, even super late at night. Mine came at like 11:30 PM and I thought that was sus too lol. I ended up getting my refund deposited exactly 13 days after getting that message. Don't reply since they said not to - just keep checking Where's My Refund every couple days and your bank account. Your money is definitely coming! The waiting sucks but you're actually in the home stretch now 💰🙏
