ID.me verification failing - keeps giving error message for IRS account access
I'm trying to verify my identity through ID.me for my IRS account but keeps giving me error messages. Anyone else having this issue or know how to fix it? Already tried different browsers and clearing my cache but nothing works.

I work with tax resolution and see this all the time. Try calling the ID.me support line directly at 866-775-4363. They're usually pretty helpful. If that doesn't work, you might need to schedule an in-person appointment at your local IRS office for verification.

Hey guys instead of going through all this hassle, I've been using taxr.ai and it's been a game changer. It costs $4.99 but its worth every penny - analyzes your transcript and tells you exactly whats going on and what to do next. Check it out at https://taxr.ai

•interesting... how exactly does it work? does it just read transcripts or what?

•it uses AI to analyze everything in your transcript and gives you specific guidance. way better than trying to piece together info from reddit posts tbh

Had the same issue a few weeks ago! What worked for me was making sure I was in a well-lit room and holding my ID really steady during the photo capture. Also double check that your ID isn't expired - mine was about to expire and that was causing issues. If you're still having trouble, try doing it during off-peak hours like early morning when their servers aren't as busy.

•this is super helpful! i never thought about the lighting being an issue. gonna try again tomorrow morning when it's brighter and see if that helps 🤞

I had this exact same problem! What finally worked for me was using incognito/private browsing mode and making sure I had a stable internet connection. Also, if you have any ad blockers or browser extensions running, try disabling them temporarily. The ID.me system can be really finicky with certain browser settings. Good luck!

Try using a different device entirely if you can - sometimes the issue is device-specific. I had this problem for weeks on my laptop but when I switched to my tablet it worked immediately. Also make sure you're using the most recent version of your browser. The ID.me system seems to be really picky about browser compatibility. If you're still stuck after trying these suggestions, you can also try the IRS's in-person authentication option at a Taxpayer Assistance Center.

•Great suggestion about trying a different device! I was banging my head against the wall with this same issue for days on my old laptop. Switched to my phone and boom - worked like a charm. Sometimes the simplest solutions are the best ones. Thanks for sharing! 😊

I've been helping folks with ID.me issues for a while now and here's what usually works: First, make sure you're using a supported browser (Chrome or Firefox work best). Clear your cookies and cache completely, then restart your browser. When you get to the document scan part, make sure there's no glare on your ID and all four corners are visible in the frame. For the selfie, remove glasses if you wear them and make sure you're in good lighting. If it still fails, try doing it on your phone using the ID.me mobile app - sometimes their mobile verification works better than desktop. The system can be really temperamental but these steps solve most issues I've seen.

•This is such a comprehensive guide, thank you! I've been struggling with this for over a week and your step-by-step approach is exactly what I needed. Just tried the mobile app suggestion and it's already working better than my desktop attempts. Really appreciate you taking the time to break down all the troubleshooting steps - this should be pinned somewhere for everyone dealing with ID.me issues! 🙌

Another thing that helped me was making sure my device's camera permissions were properly enabled for the browser. Go to your browser settings and check that camera access is allowed for the ID.me website. Also, if you're on Windows, sometimes Windows Defender or other antivirus software can interfere with the verification process - try temporarily disabling real-time protection during the verification. I know it sounds basic but I spent hours troubleshooting before realizing my antivirus was blocking the camera feed. Hope this helps someone else avoid the same headache!

•This is such a good point about camera permissions! I had the same issue where my browser was blocking camera access and I didn't even realize it. For anyone else struggling, you can usually check this by clicking the camera icon in your address bar or going to Settings > Privacy > Camera in most browsers. Also had a similar problem with my firewall blocking certain scripts on the ID.me site. Sometimes the most technical-sounding problems have really simple solutions like this. Thanks for sharing! 👍

I had this exact same issue a few months ago and it was so frustrating! What finally worked for me was doing the verification during off-peak hours (like early morning around 6-7 AM) when their servers aren't overloaded. Also make sure you're not using any VPN or proxy - that can cause verification failures too. If you're still stuck, try the video call option with an ID.me agent instead of the automated verification. It takes longer but they can walk you through any issues in real time. Don't give up, it's definitely fixable!

•Yes! The timing thing is so true - I was trying to do mine during lunch breaks and it kept timing out. Finally did it at like 6 AM and it went through on the first try. The video call option is also clutch if you're really stuck, even though you have to wait a bit longer. Thanks for mentioning the VPN thing too - I bet a lot of people don't think about that causing issues!

Had this same nightmare with ID.me! One thing that hasn't been mentioned yet - if you're using Chrome, try switching to Firefox or Safari temporarily. Chrome has been having weird issues with ID.me's camera integration lately. Also, make sure you're sitting completely still during the selfie part - even tiny movements can cause it to fail. The system is super sensitive. If all else fails, you can actually go to certain participating 7-Eleven stores that offer ID.me in-person verification now - might be easier than dealing with all the technical headaches online.

•Wait, 7-Eleven does ID.me verification now?! That's actually genius - I had no idea that was even an option. I've been fighting with this online verification for days and getting nowhere. Do you know if all 7-Elevens offer this or just certain locations? And is there like an appointment system or can you just walk in? This could be a total game changer for people who are having technical issues with the online process!

•Not all 7-Elevens have it - you have to check the ID.me website for participating locations near you. I think it's still rolling out to more stores. When I did it, I just walked in but they do recommend checking their hours first since some locations have specific times when the service is available. Way less stressful than dealing with camera glitches and error messages online! @Zara Rashid
