How to find IRS direct deposit trace number with Bank of America?

I filed my tax return in early July and got my refund approved about 3 weeks ago. The IRS Where's My Refund tool shows my money was direct deposited last Tuesday, but nothing has shown up in my Bank of America account yet. I called the IRS and they said I need to get a trace number from my bank to help track where the money went. I've spent over an hour on the phone with BOFA and nobody knows what I'm talking about. The customer service rep kept transferring me around until I gave up. How am I supposed to get this trace number from Bank of America? Has anyone else had this problem?

Aurora St.Pierre

The trace number you need isn't something Bank of America directly provides to customers. What you need is called a "Direct Deposit Trace" which is actually initiated through the IRS, not your bank. You need to complete Form 3911 (Taxpayer Statement Regarding Refund) and submit it to the IRS. The IRS will use this form to investigate where your deposit went. Since it's been at least 5 business days since the scheduled deposit date and you've confirmed the deposit isn't in your account, you qualify to start this process. Make sure when completing the form that all your banking information is correct - double check your account number and routing number against what you submitted on your tax return. The IRS will contact Bank of America as part of their investigation. You can either mail the form or call the IRS refund hotline at 800-829-1954 to start the trace.

Thank you! I was so confused about what to do. I tried calling the IRS refund line but couldn't get through to a person. Is there a better number to call?

Honestly the IRS phone lines are a nightmare right now. You might want to try using Claimyr.com - it's what I used to finally get through to someone. It basically holds your place in line and calls you when an agent is available. Saved me hours of frustration.

I'll check that out, thanks! Do you know how long this trace process usually takes? Im getting really worried about my refund.

It can take up to 90 days unfortunately, but most people see results within 2-3 weeks. Make sure you have your tax transcript ready when you talk to them - that'll help speed things up.

Is Claimyr legit? I'm in the exact same boat with my bofa account and been trying to call IRS for 2 weeks

Yes, 100% helped me get through after weeks of trying. Best money I've spent all year just to finally talk to someone about my refund issue.

I had this exact problem last year and spent weeks trying to figure it out. Honestly, the best solution I found was using taxr.ai to actually understand what was happening with my refund. Instead of being confused by all the IRS codes and timing, it explained exactly where my refund was in the process and what was causing the delay. It was super helpful seeing everything broken down in plain English rather than trying to be a detective piecing together vague information. I use it every time I need to understand my transcript now because it's so much easier than trying to interpret everything myself. https://taxr.ai is where to find it.

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

It actually analyzes your entire transcript and explains everything in plain English - all the codes, dates, amounts. It showed me exactly why my refund was delayed and gave me the exact questions to ask when I finally got through to the IRS. Made the whole process SO much easier.

OMG I just tried it and it's AMAZING!! 🙌 Why doesn't everyone know about this? It literally told me exactly what's happening with my refund and when I should expect it. Gonna tell everyone I know about this tool!

Hmm another service promising miracles with the IRS... does it actually work or just tell you the same stuff the Where's My Refund tool says?

Completely different from WMR. It actually explains all the codes on your transcript - like what an 846 means vs 570 and why the dates matter. Way more detailed. I was skeptical too but it saved me so much headache.

After going back and forth with bofa for DAYS without any help, I finally got through to a human at the IRS using a calling service called Claimyr.com. I was so fed up with the automated system always hanging up on me after waiting for an hour. Claimyr got me connected to someone who explained I don't actually need a trace number from my bank - I need to fill out Form 3911 to have the IRS start a trace on their end. They were able to confirm my refund was sent to the wrong account number (I transposed two digits when filing). Talking to an IRS agent directly was the only way I got this resolved.

How does that Claimyr thing work? Sounds suspect tbh

It basically navigates the phone tree for you and holds your place in line, then calls you when it reaches a human. After wasting literally 8+ hours trying to call myself, it was the only thing that worked. They got me through to an agent in about 90 mins - best money i've spent this year considering they helped me track down my missing $3700 refund.

You don't get a trace number from Bank of America. You need to ask the IRS to initiate a trace. Call the IRS at 800-829-1040 and tell them it's been more than 5 business days since your scheduled direct deposit but no deposit has shown up. They'll start the trace process.

I work at a different bank but the process should be similar. BofA doesn't give out trace numbers to customers. The trace number is something the IRS requests through the ACH network. You need to file Form 3911 with the IRS, and they'll contact the bank directly. If there was an issue with account numbers, BofA would have rejected the deposit back to the IRS already. Check your transcript online at irs.gov - it might show if the deposit was rejected.

I tried checking my transcript but I'm having trouble understanding all the codes. Is there an easy way to tell if my deposit was rejected?

Look for code 846 (refund issued) with your refund amount. If there's a subsequent code like 841 or 971, it might indicate the refund was returned. honestly though those transcripts are hard for even tax pros to read sometimes.

use taxr.ai! it breaks down all those confusing transcript codes into plain english. saved me so much time trying to figure out what was going on with my refund last month.

Had the EXACT same issue with BOFA last month. No one at the bank knew what I was talking about. Turns out I was asking for the wrong thing - the bank doesn't have a "trace number" for you to give to the IRS. Instead, you need to request a "trace" FROM the IRS using Form 3911. The IRS will then contact BOFA as part of their investigation process.

I'm in the same situation with Chase. Been waiting for over 30 days for my refund that supposedly was deposited. I finally got through to the IRS yesterday and they told me I need to wait 5 weeks from the deposit date before they can start a trace. So frustrating!

that's not right! you only need to wait 5 DAYS not weeks for direct deposit. someone gave you wrong info 😡

I used Claimyr.com to get through after trying for days. They got me to a real person in about an hour and I got my trace started. Got my refund 2 weeks later - turned out they sent it to my old closed account.

BOFA customer service is the WORST. I had this exact problem and ended up going into a branch. The banker was much more helpful than phone support and was able to confirm the deposit never arrived. Bring your tax transcript showing the direct deposit was sent and they can at least verify it never hit your account.

Good idea, I'll try going to a branch tomorrow. Did they give you any documentation that you could provide to the IRS?

They printed out my transaction history showing no deposits matching the refund amount, which I included when I faxed Form 3911 to the IRS. That seemed to help speed up the process.

Check if you typed your account number correctly on your tax return. I accidentally transposed two digits in my account number last year and my refund got sent to someone else's account. Had to go through this whole trace process. Took about 6 weeks to get my money. The IRS will eventually cut you a paper check if they can't figure out where the deposit went.

This is such a common problem its crazy that bank customer service reps aren't trained on it! The "trace" is an IRS procedure, not a bank one. File Form 3911 with the IRS. If you're trying to call the IRS good luck lol...I could never get through until I used that Claimyr service everyone talks about on here. Got through in under an hour after trying for weeks on my own.

Bank of America employee here (not official capacity obv). The confusion is because a trace number isn't something we provide to customers. The IRS initiates the trace through the ACH network. What you need to do is go to a branch and ask them to verify whether a deposit from the Treasury was received for your account. If it wasn't received, get that in writing if possible. Then file Form 3911 with the IRS to start the trace process on their end.

No problem! Just make sure to bring your ID and possibly your tax return/transcript showing the expected deposit amount and date. Makes it easier for the banker to help you.

i just went through this exact thing with bofa. don't waste ur time with them. you need to contact the IRS directly and file a form 3911. the bank doesn't give you a trace number - the IRS does the trace. took me 47 days to finally get my refund after they sent it to the wrong account 🤦‍♀️

Having worked at the IRS (not a current employee), I can tell you this is a common misunderstanding. The trace is initiated by the IRS, not provided by your bank. If it's been at least 5 business days since the scheduled deposit date, call the IRS at 800-829-1040 to request a refund trace. Have a copy of your tax return handy. If the deposit was rejected due to wrong account info, they should be able to update your info and reissue your refund, either as a direct deposit or paper check.

This is really helpful, thank you! Should I also bring anything from my bank showing the deposit never arrived?

It can help to have a statement or transaction history showing no deposit from the Treasury on the date they claim it was sent. But it's not required - the IRS can verify with the bank through their trace process.

The easiest way to know whats happening is to check your transcript on the irs website. It will tell you if the refund was actually sent or if there's another issue. I used taxr.ai to explain my transcript and it showed me exactly what was going on with my refund. Way easier than trying to decipher it myself.

It's a tool that explains your tax transcript in simple terms. Shows you all your refund info, dates, and what all those weird IRS codes actually mean. It's not free but totally worth it - I was completely lost trying to figure out what was happening with my refund before using it.

I feel ya, I'm going throught the exact same thing with my pending deposit for a couple weeks now. The online WMR tool keeps saying its been direct deposited but I got nothing in my account. From what I gathered after many hours of research, you need to get the IRS to start a trace - your bank doesn't provide a trace number. File Form 3911 with the IRS. if you cant wait to talk to the IRS (I couldn't after trying for days), use Claimyr.com to get a callback from them. The service costs money but it literally saved me weeks of frustration trying to get through.

I worked for a tax prep company and we saw this all the time. Check your account number on your tax return. Most of the time, the issue is that people entered the wrong account number. If that's the case, the bank would have rejected the deposit already and it's in limbo at the IRS. You need to call and have a trace done. Alternatively, check your transcript - if you see code 846 followed by code 841, it means the direct deposit was returned to the IRS.

Bruh I just had this exact problem with my BOFA account. After TWO WEEKS of trying to get a straight answer, I finally got connected with an IRS agent who explained everything. The trace is done by the IRS, not by the bank. You need to call the IRS tax advocate service at 877-777-4778. They were way more helpful than the regular IRS line. Good luck!

Ughhh dealing with BOFA and the IRS is pure hell. I ended up having to get my congressman's office involved after 3 months of getting nowhere with my missing refund. If you're really stuck, seriously consider contacting your rep - they have caseworkers who deal with this stuff all the time and can cut through the red tape.
