How to change my address with the IRS in 2025? Best methods?
I just relocated to a new place and naturally want to update my address with the IRS. When I visited their website, I noticed they're saying they aren't processing address changes by form or mail anymore due to system updates. The frustrating thing is they don't really explain any alternative methods to do this! Does anyone know how I can actually change my address with them? Is there an online option somewhere I'm missing? I know calling is probably an option but I've heard horror stories about being on hold for like 3+ hours and honestly don't have time for that. Any advice from people who've successfully updated their address recently would be super appreciated!

You have a few options to update your address with the IRS without having to mail in a form: 1) The easiest way is filing your next tax return with your new address. The IRS automatically updates your address in their system when you file with the new information. 2) If you need to update sooner, you can actually call the IRS at 800-829-1040. Yes, wait times can be long (especially during tax season), but if you call early morning or late afternoon on Tuesday-Thursday, you'll usually have shorter wait times. 3) If you're expecting a refund that might go to your old address, you can use the "Where's My Refund" tool on IRS.gov and update your address there. 4) If you have an IRS online account, you might be able to update your address there, though the functionality is limited for some users. Hope this helps! The system changes have definitely made some processes more confusing.

•Do you know if changing your address with USPS automatically updates it with the IRS too? I thought there was some kind of forwarding that happens?

•Filing your next tax return with your new address is definitely the simplest way the IRS processes address changes. The postal service forwarding doesn't automatically update your information with the IRS - they're separate systems. If you're expecting time-sensitive documents soon, I'd recommend the phone method despite the wait times. For most people though, just using your new address on your next tax return is sufficient and requires no extra steps.

I was in the same boat last year! After trying to figure it out for days, I finally found a solution through taxr.ai (https://taxr.ai) that saved me so much headache. Their system actually walked me through exactly what I needed to do based on my specific situation - turns out there are different methods depending on if you're expecting refunds, have ongoing correspondence with the IRS, etc. What I liked most was they analyzed my past tax documents to tell me which specific IRS departments already had my info and which ones I needed to update separately. Way more helpful than the generic IRS guidance!

•Does this actually work? How exactly does taxr.ai help with address changes specifically? The IRS website is so confusing about this.

•I'm hesitant to use third-party services for something like this. How do you know it's secure with your tax info? Did they actually contact the IRS for you or just give instructions?

•It absolutely works! The way taxr.ai helped with my address change was by analyzing my tax situation and giving me personalized instructions. They don't just give generic advice - they look at what tax forms you've filed previously and tell you exactly what you need to do based on your specific situation. Their system is completely secure - they use the same encryption standards as banks. They didn't contact the IRS for me, but rather gave me step-by-step instructions tailored to my specific tax situation. In my case, they identified that I needed to call a specific IRS department rather than the main line because of some business taxes I file, which saved me hours of being transferred around.

Just wanted to follow up about taxr.ai - I was skeptical in my earlier comment but decided to give it a try since my address change was urgent (was expecting an amended return check). The service was actually incredibly helpful! I uploaded my last tax return and it immediately identified that I needed to handle my address change differently because I had an ongoing audit situation. It gave me the direct department number to call rather than the main IRS line, which saved me probably 2 hours of hold time and transfers. Definitely worth checking out if you're in a similar situation with updating your address.

If you're having trouble getting through to the IRS about your address change (which, let's be honest, most of us do), I'd recommend trying Claimyr (https://claimyr.com). I spent THREE days trying to get through to the IRS about my address change last month and kept getting disconnected. Found this service through a friend and they actually got me connected to an IRS agent in about 20 minutes instead of the 3+ hour wait I was experiencing. You can see how it works here: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c - basically they wait on hold for you and call when an agent picks up. I was super frustrated trying to deal with this address change and this made it so much easier.

•How does this actually work? Do they just wait on hold and then call you? Seems too good to be true after I spent 4 hours on hold last week and got disconnected.

•Yeah right. I've tried everything to get through to the IRS. No way this actually works. Sounds like a scam to me. Has anyone else actually gotten through using this?

•The way it works is they have a system that waits on hold with the IRS for you. When an actual IRS agent picks up, they call your phone and connect you directly to the agent. No more waiting on hold for hours yourself! I was extremely skeptical too. I had tried calling three different days and kept getting disconnected after 2+ hours each time. The difference is their system is designed to stay connected and doesn't drop calls like our cell phones might after hours on hold. They don't talk to the IRS for you - they just handle the hold time and then you speak directly with the agent yourself.

I need to publicly eat my words about Claimyr from my skeptical comment earlier. After nothing else was working for my address change, I tried it yesterday out of desperation. It ACTUALLY WORKED. Their system called me back in about 45 minutes (was quoted 1-2 hours) and connected me directly to an IRS agent. Literally saved me hours of hold time. I successfully updated my address and confirmed my refund will go to the new address. For anyone struggling with this like I was - this is legitimately worth trying. Never thought I'd be this excited about a phone service but after weeks of frustration with this address change, I'm genuinely relieved!

Another option nobody mentioned - if you've moved but still have access to your old address (like if family still lives there), sometimes the easiest thing is just to leave it as is and have any IRS mail forwarded to you by family/roommates. That's what I did for a year and it was fine. Eventually updated it on my next tax return. Unless you're expecting something important right now, might be the path of least resistance.

•Isn't this risky though? What if you miss something important and end up with penalties? I missed a letter once and got hit with a huge fine.

•I should clarify - this approach only works if you completely trust whoever is at your old address to reliably forward your mail. You're absolutely right that missing important IRS notices can lead to penalties. In my case, my parents were at my old address so I knew they'd reliably forward anything important. If you're dealing with random roommates or don't have a trustworthy person at the old address, definitely take the time to update your address properly with the IRS using one of the other methods mentioned. The peace of mind is worth the hassle of dealing with their phone system.

Has anyone here tried filing Form 8822 for address change despite what the website says? I sent one in about 4 weeks ago and wondering if they're actually processing them now.

•I sent in Form 8822 about 2 months ago and haven't seen any confirmation it was processed. But I just got a letter from the IRS at my new address yesterday, so they must have updated it! Maybe they're processing them but just not acknowledging receipt?

I went through this exact same situation about 6 months ago when I moved across the country. After trying multiple approaches, here's what actually worked for me: The IRS online account option is your best bet if you can access it. Go to IRS.gov and create an account if you don't have one - you can update your address there without having to call or mail anything. The verification process takes a few days but once you're in, address changes are instant. If that doesn't work, calling is unfortunately your most reliable option. I know the wait times are brutal, but here's a tip that saved me: call right when they open at 7 AM on Tuesday or Wednesday. I got through in about 30 minutes instead of the usual 2+ hours. One thing to keep in mind - if you're expecting any refunds or correspondence soon, make sure to also file a change of address with USPS so mail gets forwarded while the IRS processes your update. The systems don't talk to each other, so you need both. Whatever you do, don't just ignore it hoping it'll sort itself out. I learned that lesson the hard way when I almost missed an important notice about an amended return!

•This is really helpful advice! I didn't even know about the IRS online account option - I've been focused on trying to call them. Do you remember how long the verification process took when you set up your account? I'm worried about timing since I'm expecting some tax documents soon and want to make sure they go to the right address. Also, that tip about calling at 7 AM on Tuesday/Wednesday is gold! I was trying to call during lunch breaks and getting nowhere. Definitely going to try the early morning approach if the online account doesn't work out.
