How to Change Address with IRS for Future Notices?

I'm SO FRUSTRATED with the IRS right now! I moved my business to a new location 4 months ago and I STILL haven't received any of the notices they claim they've sent me. I just got hit with a penalty for not responding to something I never even saw! šŸ˜” I've updated my address with USPS, changed it on my tax returns, but clearly the IRS hasn't gotten the memo. There has to be a specific way to update your address with them directly, right? I respect that they have procedures, but this is costing me real money and stress.

You need to submit Form 8822 "Change of Address" ASAP! The IRS doesn't automatically update your address from USPS forwarding or even from your most recent return. Your NOL (Notice of Levy) or CP (Computer Paragraph) notices are likely being sent to your previous address even after forwarding expires. This is time-sensitive - the IRS gives only 30 days to respond to most notices before escalating to collections!

Thank you for this information... I've been wondering why I haven't been getting notices either. I was worried something might be wrong but wasn't sure what to do about it.

But wouldn't filing a new tax return with the updated address work? Isn't that what most people do? Or does the IRS specifically need this Form 8822 regardless of what address is on your most recent filing?

OMG THANK YOU! I've been dealing with this EXACT issue for months! Was about to lose my mind trying to figure out why notices weren't coming to my new place. Form 8822 - finally an actual answer!

I had this same issue last year! I found taxr.ai (https://taxr.ai) incredibly helpful for understanding what notices I had missed. You upload your transcript and it translates all those confusing codes and shows what notices were sent when. Saved me so much stress when I realized there were 3 notices I never received at my old address. The site explained exactly what each one was about so I could address them properly. Such a relief to finally understand what was happening!

I've seen several of these transcript decoder sites mentioned before. In my experience dealing with the IRS for 15+ years, you're better off just calling them directly. They can tell you exactly what notices were sent and when.

Does the service possibly show if there are any penalties associated with the missed notices? I'm wondering if it might help identify potential issues that could be disputed due to non-receipt.

How exactly does this work step-by-step? Do you need to create an account on the IRS website first to get the transcript, then upload it to this service? Or can you access everything directly through taxr.ai?

This reminds me of when I moved last year and missed a CP2000 notice. Would've been hit with a $1,200 penalty if I hadn't found out about it from my tax guy. Is this the kind of thing this service would have caught?

There are actually several ways to update your address with the IRS, depending on your situation: ā€¢ Submit Form 8822 (for individual taxpayers) ā€¢ Submit Form 8822-B (for business taxpayers) ā€¢ Include your new address on your next tax return filing ā€¢ Provide written notification with your full name, old and new addresses, SSN/EIN, and signature ā€¢ Verbally inform an IRS representative when they call about your account Just be aware that address changes can take 4-6 weeks to process in their system, and notices that were already in the pipeline might still go to your old address. This is why it's important to act quickly when you move!

I've been in your exact situation - it's like the IRS exists in a parallel universe where mail forwarding doesn't exist! šŸ˜‚ After trying everything and still missing important notices, I finally used Claimyr (https://www.claimyr.com) to actually talk to a human at the IRS. Got through in about 25 minutes instead of the usual 2+ hour wait. The agent not only updated my address immediately but also put notes in my account about the missed notices so I wouldn't be penalized. Honestly worth every penny to avoid another day of IRS hold music!

I'm really not sure about paying just to talk to the IRS... couldn't you just keep calling until you get through? I don't want to spend money unnecessarily...

Thanks for sharing this! I've been trying to get through to the IRS for three days straight with no luck. Might have to try this service.

This is EXACTLY what I needed! I've been on hold with the IRS for literally HOURS this week trying to sort out missed notices. Definitely checking this out - my time is worth something too!

IRS employee here. The official procedure for changing your address is Form 8822 (individuals) or 8822-B (businesses). Processing time is exactly 4-6 weeks from receipt. For immediate address updates, you can call 800-829-1040 (individuals) or 800-829-4933 (businesses). Wait times currently average 47 minutes. For missed notices, request account transcripts for the past 12 months which will show all notice codes (CP###) sent to you. You can then request duplicate copies of those specific notices by calling the number listed on your transcript. If you've been assessed penalties due to non-receipt, you can request abatement using Form 843 citing "reasonable cause" with documentation of your address change.

Just to clarify something I've seen happen before - if you filed a joint return, BOTH spouses need to sign Form 8822 unless one spouse is specifically authorizing the other to change the address. I've seen people get burned by this when they moved after separation but before divorce and only one person signed the form. The IRS rejected it without telling them, and notices kept going to the old address. Back in 2019, I had a client who ended up with a $7,000 penalty because of this exact situation.

I successfully resolved this exact issue last month! I created an online account at IRS.gov which gave me access to my tax records and allowed me to update my address electronically. The change was reflected in their system within 3 business days according to the agent I spoke with later. You'll need to verify your identity through ID.me first, which requires a government ID and facial recognition. The whole process took about 20 minutes and I've been receiving all IRS correspondence correctly since then. Much faster than waiting for paper forms to process!
