Address change triggered ID verification with IRS - what's the process?
I moved to a new apartment in September 2025 and updated my address with USPS. Filed my taxes in November with my new address. Got a letter from IRS last week saying they need me to verify my identity before they process my refund. Guessing it's because of the address change? Has anyone gone through this? Do I need to physically go to an IRS office for this or is there an online option? My refund is about $3,800 and I was hoping to get it before the holidays.

Yes, an address change often triggers ID verification with the IRS. You have two options: 1. You can verify online through ID.me on the IRS website (irs.gov/identity-verification). You'll need to create an account if you don't already have one, and provide documents like your ID, Social Security card, and possibly utility bills. 2. If you can't verify online or prefer not to, you can schedule an in-person appointment at your local IRS office by calling 844-545-5640. The online option is much faster if you have the documents ready. Just make sure you're on the official IRS site. Once verified, your refund should process within 2-3 weeks typically.

•Thank you! I'll try the online option first. Do you know if they'll accept my apartment lease as proof of address?

•Yes, a lease agreement is one of the accepted documents for proof of address! They also accept utility bills, bank statements, or payslips with your new address.

•Just went thru this. The online verification took me like 20 mins tops. Had to take selfies and pics of my license. Way better than going in person!

•Be careful with ID.me tho - their facial recognition was acting up for me and I got locked out. Had to call customer support and it was a whole ordeal 🤦♀️

•Anyone know how long after verification until the refund actually hits your account? Been waiting 10 days since I verified...

•In my experience, it's usually 9-21 days after verification. But with the holidays coming up, might take a bit longer due to reduced staffing.

I was going crazy trying to figure out why I kept getting these verification notices from the IRS. Honestly the IRS website was useless for understanding what was happening with my account. I tried this tool called taxr.ai and it made such a difference! It analyzed my transcript and explained exactly why I was flagged for verification (in my case it was the address change plus a large education credit). The tool showed me exactly what steps I needed to take and even predicted when my refund would come through after verification. Way easier than playing detective with those confusing transcripts! https://taxr.ai

•Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

Jamal Wilson
•It does WAY more than just read the transcript! It actually interprets all the codes and explains everything in plain english. It also gives you a timeline of exactly what's happened with your return and what to expect next. Saved me hours of googling random IRS codes and trying to piece everything together myself.

•I just tried it and WOW this is a game changer! I've been stressing for weeks about why my refund was delayed and this explained everything in like 2 minutes. Seriously people need to know about this - it's insanely helpful!

•Not sketchy at all! You don't even need to give personal info - just upload your transcript and it analyzes it. I was skeptical too but it was actually really helpful for understanding exactly what was happening with my return.

After struggling with this exact situation, I finally got through to an actual IRS agent using claimyr.com and they helped me resolve everything in one call. I'd been trying the regular IRS number for weeks with no luck - just that automated system that eventually hangs up on you. The callback service connected me with a real person who explained the verification process and even processed mine while I was on the phone. Best decision ever after wasting so much time on hold!

•How does this work? The IRS phone lines are impossible to get through

•It basically navigates the IRS phone tree for you and holds your place in line. Then they call you when an agent is available. Saved me hours of listening to that awful hold music!

•Absolutely worth it! Getting a real person who could access my account and tell me exactly what was going on instead of guessing was priceless. Talking to the agent got my verification cleared and my refund released within days - it was the only way I could actually get help.

•I was skeptical too but this actually worked for me last month. Got a callback in about 2 hours when I'd spent days trying on my own with no luck.

This happened to me after my move last year. The ID verification is just standard procedure when they see an address change - it's to prevent fraud. I had to go in person because my phone number had also changed and they couldn't verify me online. The in-person appointment was actually pretty quick once I finally got one scheduled. Took about 30 minutes total and my refund was deposited 9 days later.

the IRS is so broken 🤡 like why can't they just check with USPS directly instead of making us jump through all these hoops?? and right before the holidays too, when ppl need their money the most smh

•For real!!! They can track every penny we make but somehow can't figure out if we moved? Make it make sense 🙄

•To be fair, its actually a security measure to protect us from identity theft. Someone could steal your mail and file a refund to their address if they didnt have these verification steps

Word of advice - take screenshots of EVERYTHING during the verification process. I completed mine online, got a confirmation, and then never heard anything for 60 days. When I finally got someone on the phone, they had no record of my verification. Had to start the whole process over but at least I had proof I'd already done it once.

Its not just address changes that trigger verification. I've had to verify my ID for the past 3 years running, even though nothing changed. IRS told me I'm permanently flagged for verification because my identity was stolen back in 2023. So now I get to go through this dance every single year 😭

I found out the hard way that if you're trying to verify online and fail 3 times, they lock you out completely and you HAVE to go in person. So make sure you have all your docs ready before you start the online process!

Did you get a specific letter number? Like CP01E or 5071C? The process is slightly different depending on which notice you received.

•Just checked - it's a 5071C letter.

•Perfect, so that's the standard identity verification letter. You should be able to complete the process online through the Identity Verification Service. Just make sure you have your letter, last year's tax return, and this year's tax return information handy.

Don't waste your time with the IRS phone line or website!! I spent 3 weeks trying to get my ID verified after moving and getting nowhere. Used taxr.ai to look at my transcript and it showed me exactly what was happening with my return - turns out I had a different issue than just the address verification! Understanding exactly what was happening made it so much easier to resolve. https://taxr.ai

•Nope it actually explains all the codes for you - like real human explanations not just the IRS definitions! And it shows you a timeline of everything that's happened and what to expect next. It's so much more helpful than just looking at the transcript yourself.

Pro tip from someone who works with taxes - if you need to go in person, don't just show up at an IRS office. You NEED an appointment. Call 844-545-5640 to schedule. And if you're in a rush for your refund, mention financial hardship when you call - they sometimes have emergency appointments available.

tried to use ID.me for verification and it was a complete disaster. their facial recognition system kept failing, then they wanted me to do a video call but the wait was 3+ hours, then when i finally got someone they said my documents weren't clear enough. ended up having to go in person anyway. what a joke

After literally 6 months of trying to get through to someone at the IRS about my verification issue, I finally used claimyr.com and got connected to an agent within a few hours. The agent was able to manually verify my identity over the phone and release my refund that had been stuck in limbo. Talking to a live person made all the difference - they took care of it in minutes when I'd been struggling for months. Worth every penny for the time it saved me.

This is especially common if you moved to a different state! The IRS flags those address changes more often because of state tax implications. I moved from CA to TX last year and had to do the whole verification song and dance.

I just want to know why the IRS treats us all like criminals by default. Like sorry I had to move apartments because my rent went up 40%, now I gotta PROVE IM ME?? This country I swear...

•It's because identity theft for tax refunds is actually super common. My cousin had someone file a fake return in his name last year and it was a nightmare to fix.

HEADS UP TO EVERYONE: There are scammers sending fake IRS verification letters trying to get your personal info! Make sure you ONLY use the official irs.gov website or call the official numbers. If you get a text or email claiming to be about ID verification, it's 100% a scam - the IRS only sends letters for this.

It took me SIX APPOINTMENTS to get my ID verified last year because the IRS kept having 'system issues'. Each time I took off work, drove 45 minutes to the office, waited an hour, only to be told to come back another day. Absolute nightmare.

•This is why I ended up using claimyr.com - after my second canceled appointment I gave up and just paid to get someone on the phone. They verified me right there and I got my refund the next week. Saved me so much time and frustration.

If your holding back any information when you file such as 1099s they will make you verify who you are. Just file accurate and don't leave anything out and the process is pretty straight forward. I've been through the process and it's a pain but it's not that big of a deal.

LPT: If you create an IRS online account before you file your taxes, you're less likely to get flagged for ID verification when there are address changes. They already have your verified identity on file. I do this every year and haven't had issues despite moving 3 times in 5 years.

I went through this exact same situation when I moved last year! The address change definitely triggers their verification system. I'd recommend trying the online verification first through ID.me on the official IRS website - it's usually faster than scheduling an in-person appointment. Make sure you have your driver's license, Social Security card, and something showing your new address like a utility bill or lease agreement. The whole process took me about 15 minutes online, and my refund was processed within 2 weeks after verification. Just be patient with the facial recognition part - sometimes it takes a few tries to get a clear photo!

I had this same issue when I moved across town last year! The address change definitely triggers their verification system. A few tips that helped me: 1. Try the online verification first through ID.me - it's usually much faster than booking an in-person appointment 2. Have all your documents ready: driver's license, Social Security card, and proof of new address (your lease should work perfectly) 3. Make sure you're on the official IRS website (irs.gov) when doing the verification - there are scam sites out there 4. The facial recognition can be finicky, so make sure you have good lighting and try a few times if needed My verification took about 20 minutes online and my refund was processed within 2 weeks. Much better than dealing with IRS phone lines or trying to get an appointment! Hope this helps and you get your refund soon!

•This is super helpful, thank you! I'm definitely going to try the online verification first. Quick question - did you need to provide any additional documentation beyond what you mentioned, or was the lease, ID, and SSN card enough? I want to make sure I have everything ready before I start the process so I don't get locked out like some others mentioned.

•Those three documents should be enough for most people! The system will tell you if it needs anything else during the process. I'd also recommend having a recent utility bill or bank statement with your new address as backup, just in case. The key is making sure all your documents are current and match the information on your tax return. Good luck with the verification - you've got this! 🤞

I went through this exact same thing when I moved states last year! Address changes, especially cross-state moves, almost always trigger ID verification. Here's what worked for me: 1. Start with the online verification through ID.me on irs.gov - it's way faster than trying to get an in-person appointment 2. Have your documents ready: driver's license, Social Security card, and your lease agreement (that definitely counts as proof of address) 3. The facial recognition can be tricky - make sure you have good lighting and be patient if it doesn't work the first time 4. Take screenshots of everything like someone else mentioned - I learned that the hard way! My verification took about 25 minutes online and my refund came through exactly 12 days later. The whole process is annoying but pretty straightforward once you get started. You should definitely be able to get your $3,800 before the holidays if you do the online verification soon!

•Thanks for sharing your experience! 12 days sounds reasonable - I was worried it might take months. Did you have any issues with the ID.me facial recognition, or did it work smoothly for you? I've heard mixed reviews about that part of the process.

I went through this exact situation last month when I moved apartments! The address change definitely triggered the ID verification for me too. Here's what I learned: The online verification through ID.me on the IRS website is definitely your best bet - it's much faster than trying to get an in-person appointment. Your apartment lease will absolutely work as proof of address, along with your driver's license and Social Security card. A few tips that helped me: - Make sure you have really good lighting when doing the facial recognition part - Have all your documents laid out and ready before you start - Take screenshots of every confirmation page (seriously, this saved me when there was a glitch) - Be patient with the system - it can be a bit slow but it does work The whole process took me about 20 minutes online, and I got my refund deposited exactly 10 days later. Given that your refund is $3,800, it's definitely worth doing ASAP so you can get it before the holidays. The online route should be much quicker than waiting for an in-person appointment, which are booking pretty far out right now. Good luck! The process is annoying but straightforward once you get through it.
