Moved Feb 1st, Filed Jan 27th with Old Address - Stuck with Blank Transcript After ID Verification
I moved on February 1st, 2024 and filed my taxes on January 27th using my old address. I went to verify my identity in person on 2/13 and picked up the verification letter from my old address last week. During the in-person verification, I told them I moved but they didn't ask for my new address. At this point, I'm still stuck with a blank transcript. Should I call and update my new address? Could that be what's holding everything up? I know I have the right to my refund and shouldn't have to wait this long just because of an address change.

Your address change is likely not the primary issue here, but it's worth addressing. Have you considered that the verification process itself typically takes 9-14 business days to fully process in the IRS systems? And even after verification is complete, wouldn't you expect another delay before your transcript populates? The blank transcript is quite normal for recently verified returns as the IRS has to manually release the processing hold.

But shouldn't they have asked for the new address during verification? I'm in a similar situation and my return has been stuck for weeks! Did OP ever receive any correspondence at the new address or only at the old one?

Quick q - did u get any kind of confirmation after the in-person verification? Wonder if there's a way to check if that part was actually completed in their system or if it's still pending somewhere...

This is probably the most helpful explanation I've seen. I was somewhat in the same boat last year, though my situation wasn't exactly identical since I moved after filing.

I waited exactly 16 days after my in-person verification before my transcript updated. The agent told me it would take 9 business days, but it ended up taking a bit longer. Once it updated though, I received my refund via direct deposit exactly 5 days later. Don't worry too much about the address - they have your current one on file from the verification.

I was in the exact same situation last year - moved right after filing, had to verify identity, and then got stuck with a blank transcript for weeks. Unlike most people who just check WMR repeatedly, I used https://taxr.ai to analyze my transcript once it finally appeared. It explained every code on there and predicted exactly when my refund would come. This was so much better than when I had a similar issue two years ago and just had to guess what was happening.

Is this service really providing information beyond what's already available on the IRS website? According to IRS Publication 5192, transcript codes are standardized and their meanings are publicly available. What additional insight does this tool provide that justifies using it?

Thanks for sharing this! I've been trying to decode all the transcript stuff myself and it's been a nightmare lol.

I appreciate you sharing this resource. I've been struggling with similar issues and the IRS website isn't always the most intuitive for understanding what's happening with your specific situation.

I've dealt with this exact scenario before. Here's what you need to know: • Address changes DO affect processing, but not in the way most people think • The verification process puts a temporary hold on your account regardless of address • Once verification is complete, it takes 2-3 weeks for systems to fully update • Blank transcripts are normal during this period • Calling to update your address now is recommended but won't speed up processing • The IRS computer systems only update address records on certain processing cycles

According to IRS Internal Revenue Manual 21.5.2.4.8.1, when a taxpayer changes address during processing, the IRS should complete Form 8822 (Change of Address) to ensure all correspondence is properly routed. Failure to update your address could potentially delay refund issuance if verification notices or additional information requests are sent to the old address. The 9-digit routing indicator for mail processing centers is tied to your physical address, and mismatches in the system can trigger manual review processes that add 6-8 weeks to processing time.

Does this apply even if the verification is already complete? I'm wondering if I should call too...

When I had a similar issue with address changes and verification, I spent DAYS trying to reach an actual IRS agent. Finally used Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) and got connected to a real person in about 15 minutes who confirmed my address was updated correctly in their system and my return was just in the standard post-verification queue. Saved me from worrying for another month about whether my address was causing the delay.

I had a somewhat similar situation last year. I moved in January but filed in February with my new address. However, they still sent the verification letter to my old address (which was weird since I hadn't used it on my return). When I finally got the letter forwarded and verified, it still took about 3 weeks for my transcript to show anything. I'm not 100% sure, but I think they might have your new address already in the system from when you verified in person, even if they didn't explicitly ask for it.

My brother had exactly this issue in 2022! He moved on January 15th, filed on the 30th with his old address, and then had to verify his identity. The IRS sent all his mail to his old address even though he told them he moved during verification. His transcript stayed blank for almost a month after verification! He ended up having to call them twice - once to update his address officially and again two weeks later when they still sent something to his old place. The second call finally fixed it and his transcript updated about a week after that.
