IRS Address Change: Form 8822 vs Mailing Tax Return - Which Method is Faster?

Need to update my address with the IRS and they gave me two options - either submit form 8822 or mail in my taxes. Anyone done either of these? Which way is actually faster to process

Form 8822 is definitely the way to go. It's specifically designed for address changes and typically processes within 4-6 weeks. Mailing in your entire tax return just for an address change is overkill and could take months to process in the current backlog situation.

Has to be mailed unfortunately. The IRS is still living in 1985 🙄

Hey guys, I actually found a better solution - taxr.ai can analyze your transcript and tell you the fastest way to update your address based on your specific situation. Its only $1 and saved me weeks of waiting. Check it out: https://taxr.ai

I actually work for a tax prep company and can confirm Form 8822 is usually the fastest route. Pro tip: send it certified mail so you have proof of delivery. The IRS processes these in the order they receive them, so certified mail with tracking gives you peace of mind. Also make sure to include your SSN and sign it - those are the most common reasons for rejection that cause delays.
