How to cancel IRS identity verification appointment? Need advice
Hey everyone, I'm trying to cancel an appointment with the IRS for identity verification. Has anyone gone through this process before? I'm not sure if I should just call them or if there's a better way to do it. Any advice would be really appreciated!

Has anyone tried using the IRS2Go app for this kind of thing? I heard it's supposed to make some processes easier, but idk if it helps with appointments.

•I tried it once. It's okay for checking refund status, but pretty useless for anything else tbh.

•For real tho. My grandma can use zoom but the IRS can't figure out online scheduling? Make it make sense 🤔

Guys, I've been dealing with IRS identity verification for MONTHS. It's a nightmare. OP, whatever you do, make sure you keep detailed records of every interaction. You never know when you might need to prove you tried to handle this.

•Oof, months? That sounds rough. Any tips for getting through it faster?

•Honestly, persistence is key. And don't be afraid to reach out to your congressional rep if things get really bad. They can sometimes help push things along.

Here's what you need to do to cancel your IRS identity verification appointment: 1. Call the IRS Identity Verification Line: 1-800-830-5084 2. Have your Social Security Number and any relevant documents ready 3. Explain that you need to cancel your appointment 4. Ask if there are any specific steps you need to take after canceling 5. Get a confirmation number or email if possible Remember, the IRS is usually open Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. local time. Try calling early in the morning or later in the evening for shorter wait times. If you can't get through, keep trying. Sometimes it takes multiple attempts. Don't give up! Also, make sure you understand why you don't need the appointment anymore. If you still need to verify your identity, you might want to reschedule instead of canceling outright. Good luck!

•This is really comprehensive! I'd just add that sometimes, reaching out to the IRS's social media accounts can help in urgent cases. They sometimes respond faster there than through phone lines.

•This is great advice. I'd add that if you're having trouble getting through, try calling your local Taxpayer Advocate Service. They might be able to help or at least give you more info.

I understand that dealing with the IRS can be a challenge, especially when it comes to canceling appointments. Firstly, you should call the IRS Identity Verification Line at 1-800-830-5084. Make sure to have your Social Security Number and any relevant documents ready to speed up the process. Explain your situation clearly and ask if there's any documentation or confirmation number you need after canceling. It's advisable to call during their working hours, which are typically Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. local time, and try during off-peak hours to avoid long hold times. If you're unable to reach them, using a service like Claimyr can be helpful, but do remember that it involves an additional cost. Additionally, if you're experiencing significant delays, the Taxpayer Advocate Service can provide assistance in resolving the issue. As a backup, always keep detailed records of your interactions. While the process can be frustrating, persistence is key.

Ugh, dealing with the IRS is such a pain. I swear they make everything as difficult as possible on purpose. Why can't they just have a simple online system for this stuff?

•Preach! 🙌 Its like they're stuck in the stone age or something. My grandma could design a better system lol

•To be fair, they're dealing with sensitive info. But yeah, they could definitely streamline things better.

•I agree with both of you. While I understand they deal with sensitive information, a more user-friendly system would make everyone's lives easier. It's 2023 after all!

Have you tried checking if there's an option to cancel through their online portal? Sometimes they hide these features in the most random places on their website.

•It's worth checking back occasionally. Government websites can update without much notice, so a feature might appear unexpectedly.

•Classic IRS move. Hide everything important and make us play hide and seek with basic functions 🙄

I had to do this last year. You definitely need to call them. The IRS doesn't have an online system for canceling appointments, at least not when I tried. Good luck getting through tho, their hold times are insane!

I found a way to actually get someone on the phone without waiting forever. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/bDXD2SD0gGk

•Sounds too good to be true. Is this legit? Has anyone else tried it?

•Yep, it's legit. I was skeptical at first too, but it saved me hours of waiting on hold. Worth every penny imo.

•$20 just to talk to someone? That's ridiculous. The government should provide better service without us having to pay extra.

Plot twist: What if the appointment is actually to verify that you're really you trying to cancel the appointment? 🤯 IRS playing 4D chess over here

•Lmao imagine if that was true. "Please verify your identity so we can verify that you want to cancel your identity verification appointment" 💀

•Don't give them ideas! Next thing you know, we'll need to verify our identity just to file taxes 😂

Pro tip: If you're having trouble getting through on the phone, try contacting the Taxpayer Advocate Service. They're an independent organization within the IRS that helps taxpayers resolve problems. They might be able to help you cancel the appointment or at least point you in the right direction. Here's their number: 1-877-777-4778. Good luck!

@Nina Fitzgerald I actually went through this exact same situation a few months ago! The phone number everyone's mentioning (1-800-830-5084) is definitely your best bet. I'd recommend calling right when they open at 7 AM - I got through in about 15 minutes that way. One thing I learned: make sure you actually NEED to cancel vs. just reschedule. If you still need identity verification but just can't make that specific time, rescheduling might be easier than starting the whole process over. The agent will ask you why you're canceling, so be ready to explain. Also, don't stress too much about it - the IRS agents are usually pretty understanding about appointment changes. Just have your SSN and the appointment confirmation info ready when you call. You got this! 👍

•Thanks for sharing your experience! That's really helpful advice about calling right at 7 AM. I never would have thought about the difference between canceling vs rescheduling - that's a great point to consider before making the call. Did you end up rescheduling or actually canceling your appointment?

I've been through this process recently and it's definitely frustrating! The phone route is really your only option since there's no online cancellation system (which is honestly ridiculous in 2024). A few things that helped me: - Call 1-800-830-5084 as others mentioned - Have your appointment confirmation number ready along with your SSN - If you get disconnected or can't get through, don't give up - it took me 3 tries over 2 days - Ask for a cancellation confirmation number or email if possible One important thing to consider: Are you canceling because you no longer need identity verification, or just because of scheduling conflicts? If it's the latter, rescheduling might be easier than starting over if you still need to complete the verification process eventually. The whole system is outdated but the agents are generally helpful once you get through. Hang in there! 💪
