How many days between 570 code, 971 code, and finally 846 refund code? Timeline predictions?

Got the dreaded 570 code last Tuesday on my transcript, and just checked again to find a 971 code appeared. Is this the typical sequence everyone goes through? How long after these two codes did you all start seeing the 846 refund issued code? πŸ‘€πŸ‘€ I'm trying to map out the timeline here. Does the appearance of the 971 mean I'm getting closer to a resolution? Or could this still drag on for weeks? My wife and I are PCSing next month and could really use that refund for moving expenses.

In my experience tracking hundreds of these cases, the 570/971 combo typically resolves with an 846 code within 7-21 days. I saw a batch update on March 14th where people who received 570 codes on March 1st got their 846 codes. Then again on March 21st, those with 570 codes from March 8th received updates. The IRS seems to be processing these weekly on Thursdays right now.

That timeline seems optimistic compared to what I've seen. Last year my brother had a 570/971 combo that took almost 6 weeks to resolve, while my neighbor got his 846 code in just 9 days. Seems like it really depends on what triggered the hold in the first place.

Does day of week matter? Filed on Monday. Got 570 on Friday. Wondering if weekend processing affects timeline.

Have you received any notices in the mail yet? According to IRM 21.5.6.4.35.1, the 971 code indicates a notice has been generated, which could be anything from an adjustment letter to a request for additional information. The specific notice will determine your timeline. Did you claim any credits that might trigger additional verification under IRC Section 32(k)?

Had similar situation last month. Got my notice exactly 5 days after 971 appeared on transcript. Was just telling me they adjusted my refund amount by $43 (math error). DDD came 8 days after that. Def check your mailbox daily rn!

Isn't it strange how the IRS still relies so heavily on physical mail in 2024? Wouldn't it be more efficient to just explain the issue directly in the transcript or provide the information electronically? I've always wondered about that.

I should probably mention that I claimed the Child Tax Credit for my two kids, and this is my first time filing with that credit. I'm wondering if that might be what's triggering the additional review? I haven't received any physical notices yet, but I'll definitely keep checking the mail. I'm somewhat worried because we're scheduled to move to Fort Bragg in about 4 weeks, so I'm hoping this resolves before then.

The CTC could definitely be a factor in your review. I'm concerned about your timeline with the upcoming PCS move. Have you considered updating your address with the IRS through Form 8822? That way any notices won't get lost during your transition. Military moves and tax issues are a challenging combination.

Check cycle code on transcript. Ends in 05? Thursday updates. Ends in 02? Monday updates. CTC claims get extra verification this year. Normal process. Nothing to worry about.

I was in a somewhat similar situation last month with the 570/971 codes. After waiting on hold with the IRS for nearly 3 hours, I finally gave up and tried Claimyr (https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c). I was a bit hesitant at first, but they connected me to an IRS agent in about 25 minutes. The agent explained that my return was just under review and gave me an estimated completion date. It saved me so much anxiety not having to guess what was happening.

Did anyone here have their refund amount change after getting these codes? I just got the 570 code yesterday and I'm freaking out because I'm counting on the exact amount I calculated. I claimed education credits and I'm worried they'll disallow them or something. This is my first time filing with education expenses.

I had the exact same sequence in February. Got 570 on Feb 8, then 971 showed up Feb 15. My 846 code with DDD appeared on March 2, so about 2 weeks after the 971. The notice was just telling me they adjusted my refund by $17 (apparently I can't do math πŸ™ƒ). Refund hit my account exactly on the DDD. Seems like the IRS just likes to keep us on our toes with these little review periods.

I'm going through this exact same situation right now! Got my 570 code on March 5th and just saw the 971 code appear yesterday. Reading through everyone's experiences here is actually really reassuring - sounds like this is pretty normal processing. @Mei Liu, your timeline tracking is super helpful! I'm also military (Navy) and have a deployment coming up in May, so I'm hoping this resolves in the next few weeks. Did anyone else notice if claiming military combat pay exclusion affects the review timeline at all? I'm wondering if that might be adding to my processing time.

@Liam Sullivan Hey there, fellow service member! I haven t'personally dealt with combat pay exclusion, but from what I ve'read in the tax code, it shouldn t'significantly impact your review timeline since it s'just an exclusion calculation. The IRS systems are pretty familiar with military pay scenarios. Your March 5th 570 date puts you right in line with the processing patterns @Mei Liu mentioned - if the Thursday update cycle holds, you might see movement this week or next. Safe travels on your upcoming deployment, and thank you for your service! πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

The timeline really depends on what's causing the hold, but based on what I've seen in our community, the 570/971 combo usually resolves within 2-3 weeks. Since you mentioned claiming Child Tax Credit for the first time, that's likely triggering the review - it's pretty standard for new credits. The IRS has been extra cautious with CTC verification since the expanded credit changes. For your PCS situation, definitely file Form 8822 to change your address as soon as you know your new duty station address. You can also set up mail forwarding with USPS, but the IRS sometimes doesn't honor forwarded mail for important notices. If you're really concerned about timing, you might want to call the Taxpayer Advocate Service - they have special procedures for military members facing hardship due to processing delays. Keep checking your transcript every Thursday morning - that seems to be when most updates happen for your cycle. Good luck with your move to Bragg!

This is really helpful advice! I'm actually going through something similar - got my 570 code two weeks ago and still waiting. The Form 8822 tip is gold, especially for military families. I had no idea about the Taxpayer Advocate Service having special procedures for service members. @Dylan Cooper, since you mentioned Fort Bragg, you might also want to check if your base has a tax assistance office - they sometimes have direct contacts at the IRS that can help expedite military-related cases. The Thursday update pattern seems pretty consistent based on what everyone's sharing here.

Based on my experience and what I've seen in this community, the 570/971 sequence you're experiencing is pretty standard IRS processing. The 971 code appearing after the 570 is actually a good sign - it means they've generated a notice explaining what's happening with your return, which typically comes before resolution. Since you mentioned this is your first time claiming the Child Tax Credit, that's almost certainly what triggered the review. The IRS has been doing enhanced verification on CTC claims, especially for first-time filers of that credit. The good news is these reviews are usually straightforward and resolve quickly once they confirm your eligibility. Given the timeline patterns others have shared here, and assuming you got your 570 last Tuesday (around March 2nd), you should hopefully see an 846 code appear within the next 1-2 weeks if the processing stays consistent with what @Mei Liu documented. For your PCS to Fort Bragg, I'd strongly recommend filing Form 8822 as soon as you have your new address confirmed. Also, since you're military, you might want to reach out to the legal assistance office on your current base - they sometimes have contacts who can help expedite processing for service members with PCS orders. The timing is definitely tight, but many folks here have seen these resolve faster than expected once the 971 notice is generated. Keep checking your transcript on Thursday mornings - that seems to be the magic day for updates! 🀞

Thanks for the detailed breakdown @Emma Bianchi! As someone new to this whole tax code situation, this is incredibly reassuring. I had no idea that first-time CTC claims triggered automatic reviews - wish the IRS was more upfront about that process. The Thursday update pattern everyone keeps mentioning is really helpful to know. I'll definitely look into the legal assistance office on base too. It's amazing how much knowledge this community has! Fingers crossed I see that 846 code soon 🀞

I'm going through almost the exact same situation! Got my 570 code on March 4th and the 971 just appeared yesterday. This is also my first year claiming CTC for my daughter, so it sounds like we're in the same boat with the verification process. Reading through everyone's experiences here is really reassuring - it seems like this 2-3 week timeline from 570 to 846 is pretty consistent. @Mei Liu, your tracking of the Thursday update patterns is super helpful! I've been obsessively checking my transcript daily, but now I know to focus on Thursday mornings. @Dylan Cooper, the PCS timing stress is real! I'm not military, but we're relocating for my job next month too. The Form 8822 advice from others here is solid - I just submitted mine online yesterday to be safe. One thing I noticed from reading all these responses is how much the IRS communication could be improved. Having codes appear with no explanation really adds unnecessary anxiety to an already stressful process. At least this community fills in the gaps! Keeping my fingers crossed we both see those 846 codes soon! 🀞

Welcome to the 570/971 waiting club! πŸ˜… It's really comforting to see so many people going through the same thing. I'm also new to this whole process and had no idea these codes were so common. The CTC verification makes total sense now that everyone's explaining it - I just wish the IRS would include a simple explanation with these codes instead of leaving us all to decode them! @Grace Johnson, that's smart thinking ahead with the Form 8822. Better safe than sorry with address changes during this process. Here's hoping we're all seeing those 846 codes by next Thursday! This community is honestly a lifesaver for understanding what's actually happening with our returns.

I'm in a very similar situation and this thread has been incredibly helpful! Got my 570 code on March 6th and just saw the 971 appear this morning. This is also my first time claiming CTC for my two kids, so it sounds like we're all going through the same verification process. What's really reassuring is seeing the consistent timeline patterns everyone is sharing - the Thursday update cycle seems pretty reliable based on @Mei Liu's tracking. I've been checking my transcript obsessively every day, but now I know to focus on Thursday mornings! The military PCS situation adds extra stress to an already anxiety-inducing process. I'm not military myself, but I can imagine how challenging it must be to coordinate a move while waiting for your refund. The Form 8822 and Taxpayer Advocate Service suggestions from others here are really valuable. One thing that strikes me from reading all these experiences is how much clearer the IRS could make this process. Having mysterious codes appear with no explanation really amplifies the stress. At least we have this community to help decode what's actually happening! Fingers crossed we all see those 846 codes soon. Based on everyone's timelines, it sounds like we're right on track for resolution in the next week or two! 🀞
