Found missing W2s on IRS website - Can I submit them without filing an amendment? (Transcript codes 810, 570, 571)

I just discovered my actual W2 forms on the IRS website after I already submitted my tax return in April. My refund has been stuck in processing for about 2 months now. Looking at my transcript, I see codes 810, 570, and 571. The W2s I found on the IRS site show some income I accidentally didn't report. Can I somehow add these W2s to my existing return without filing an amendment? My transcript is super confusing and I'm worried about doing something wrong that will delay things even more.

Unfortunately, you'll need to file an amendment (Form 1040-X) since you've already submitted your return. The codes you're seeing indicate your return is under review (810 is a freeze code), there's a refund hold (570), and the 571 code indicates a reversal of the previous hold. The IRS likely already knows about the missing W2 income since they have that information, which is probably why your return is being held up. Filing an amendment proactively is better than waiting for them to send you a notice. It will likely delay your refund further, but it's the proper way to correct the situation.

Ugh that sucks! Do you know roughly how much longer the amendment will take? My original return has already been processing for so long.

Amendments can take 16+ weeks to process under normal circumstances, sometimes longer with the current backlog. But not filing one could potentially lead to more serious issues.

Or worse - they could adjust it themselves and charge you interest and penalties. Happened to me last year 🥲

thank you for the help. I'm going to submit the amendment this weekend.

You sound like me a couple months back. I had a similar situation with missing income and it was a nightmare trying to figure out what was happening with my return. After weeks of stress I found taxr.ai and it was a game changer. It analyzed my transcript, explained all those codes, and gave me step-by-step instructions for my specific situation. Saved me hours of research and confusion! https://taxr.ai

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

It does WAY more than just read the transcript. It analyzes all the codes, explains what's happening with your specific return, predicts timelines, and gives you personalized advice. It actually helped me understand that I needed to file an amendment ASAP rather than waiting. I was clueless before using it!

Just tried taxr.ai and WOW! I've been staring at my transcript for weeks trying to figure out what was going on. This tool explained everything in plain English and told me exactly what I needed to do next. If you're dealing with any IRS issues, stop wasting time and use this! Seriously life-changing.

After going through almost the same exact situation, I couldn't get through to the IRS for weeks. Finally used Claimyr.com to get an actual human on the phone who confirmed I needed to file an amendment and explained everything. Got a callback within an hour and the agent was actually helpful! After months of frustration, talking to a real person got my questions answered and I could finally move forward.

another service promising miracles? how does this even work? the IRS never answers...

It's not magic - they basically navigate the phone system for you and secure a spot in line. When an agent is available, they connect you. After trying for literally 3 weeks on my own and getting nowhere, this was the only thing that worked. Talking to a real agent was worth every penny considering how much stress it saved me.

can confirm it works. i was skeptical too but was desperate after calling the IRS like 30 times myself. having an actual agent look at my account was 100% worth it

I went thru this same thing last october. The codes you're seeing can mean a few things: 810 - means your return is frozen for review 570 - additional account action pending (usually refund hold) 571 - resolved additional account action In my case the IRS actually adjusted my return automatically when they found my missing W2 and I received a notice CP12 in the mail about 3 weeks after. They corrected the amount and released the refund minus the additional tax I owed from the missing W2. You might want to wait and see if they do the same for you instead of amending.

This happened to me too! The IRS adjusted it themselves. But they charged me interest because they considered it my fault 😡

How long did the whole process take from when you first noticed the 810/570 codes until you got your refund?

About 5 weeks total. First saw the codes, then got the letter, then refund came about 10 days after that.

The 810 code is a freeze code which is bad news. It means the IRS identified a discrepancy (likely your missing W2s) and they're holding your return for review. The 570 code is an additional hold. The 571 code often means they've resolved whatever issue they were looking at. Sometimes they will adjust your return automatically, other times they'll send you a notice asking for more info. If you wait for them to contact you, they could add penalties and interest. If you file an amendment now, it could take 20+ weeks to process (yes the IRS is THAT behind), but you'll avoid some of the penalties. I'd recommend calling the IRS directly to discuss. Prepare to wait on hold forever tho lol.

Those transcript codes (810, 570, 571) look like a standard review pattern. I used to work as a tax preparer and we'd see this sequence when the IRS was reviewing something but was on track to release it. The 571 usually means they're resolving the issue. My advice - check if the cycle code on your transcript ends in 05. If so, your transcript typically updates on Thursdays and could possibly have your refund released soon. If not, then it might update daily. You might not need to amend if they're already adjusting it.

finally, someone who knows what theyre talking about! 👏 The cycle code is super important.

My cycle code ends in 05 actually! Does that mean I should just wait until Thursday to see if anything changes?

StarStrider

Yes, with an 05 cycle, your transcript typically updates Thursday night/Friday morning. Check it Friday morning to see if there are any new codes or updates. Look for code 846 which is the refund issued code. If you see no movement in 2-3 weeks though, then consider amending.

Pro tip: sometimes the IRS will actually fix this automatically for you. Had a similar situation (tho different codes) where I forgot a W2 and they adjusted my refund amount and sent me a notice telling me about it. If ur return is already "stuck" maybe just wait another week or two and see if they resolve it? The system is designed to catch these mismatches.

am i the only one who's gonna point out that the IRS is trash for making this so complicated?? they have ALL of our w2 info already. why make us submit it again?? and then punish us if we miss something they already know about? makes zero sense. 🤡🤡🤡

THIS!!! They literally know everything already. The whole system is designed to be confusing so they can collect more in penalties and fees. Total 💩 show.

100%. Other countries just send you a form saying "here's what we know, is this right?" and you just confirm. But nooooo America has to make it impossible to understand on purpose.

If I were you, I'd just wait. The 571 code usually means they've resolved whatever issue caused the 570 hold. Since they already have your W2 info, they might just adjust your tax liability and issue a reduced refund. This happens all the time. The system is actually working as designed - they're comparing what you reported with what they have on file. Amending now might just complicate things further if they're already fixing it.

I had to deal with this a while back - 100% call the IRS directly cause theres so many variables. The 810 code is serious and you need to know whats going on. But goodluck getting through to them LOL i tried for WEEKS and could never get a human. finally used claimyr.com and had a callback within an hour. the agent explained everything and told me exactly what to do. saved me months of wondering.

I was shocked too! But that's exactly what happened. The service puts you in a priority queue or something. I don't know how it works but it actually did. After weeks of frustration, talking to a live person fixed everything in minutes.

Just want to back this up - had the same experience. Got a callback in about 45 mins. Agent was super helpful and explained my exact situation with my refund hold. Best money I ever spent after trying to call for literally weeks on my own.

You need to be careful here. Those transcript codes (810, 570, 571) can indicate an audit might be starting. The IRS specifically looks for missing income compared to what's reported on W2s. It might be worth getting professional help at this point - either a CPA or EA who can figure out exactly what's happening. I wouldn't just wait around because penalties and interest accrue from the original filing deadline, not from when you discover the mistake.

Javier Mendoza

Oh no, really? An audit?? Now I'm freaking out. I didn't intentionally leave off the W2, it was from a side job I totally forgot about. 😰

Don't panic - audit is worst case. It could just be a simple adjustment. But dealing with it proactively is always better than waiting. If it's just a small W2 you forgot, they'll probably just adjust your return. But be ready in case they ask for more info.

It's crazy how many people are in this exact same boat right now. I've been dealing with transcript codes for months and literally couldn't make sense of any of it. It was like trying to decode hieroglyphics 🤣 Finally found taxr.ai after someone recommended it here - the AI explained everything going on with my account and told me exactly what to do next. Saved me so much stress! Would highly recommend checking it out.

I just checked out taxr.ai too and wow - I can't believe this exists! It told me my exact refund date and explained all the gibberish in my transcript. Now I understand why my refund was delayed. Will def be using this every year from now on.

Interesting that u have both 570 and 571 codes. The 570 is a hold but the 571 typically means they released that specific hold. With the 810 freeze still in place tho, they're definitely reviewing something. Best guess - they noticed the missing W2 income, are adjusting your tax due amount, and will either send you a bill for the difference or reduce your refund accordingly. You might get a CP2000 notice or a CP12 adjustment letter. I've seen this pattern before and usually it resolves within 3-4 weeks without you needing to do anything.

0 coins

Mei Lin

Don't wanna freak u out, but if the W2 shows significant income that wasn't reported, you could be looking at penalties on top of the additional tax. The IRS doesn't mess around with underreported income. The 810 freeze code is serious. In some cases this can even trigger an audit where they look at prior years too. Just something to be prepared for.

Why is noone asking the obvious question: how much income was on those missing W2s? If its like $500, the IRS might just adjust and move on. If its $20k, thats a different story and could trigger serious flags. If I were you I'd be proactive and call them ASAP.

0 coins

-

It was about $3,200 from a part-time job I had for a couple months. Not a huge amount but definitely more than a few hundred.

That's in the gray area. Not trivial but not massive either. If I were you, I'd file the 1040-X amendment now rather than waiting. Shows good faith and might reduce any potential penalties. But expect your refund to be delayed significantly.

lmao everyone giving different advice 😂 welcome to tax hell where nobody knows what's happening, not even the IRS themselves most of the time. I tried calling them 47 times last year and never got through. ended up using claimyr.com to get an agent on the phone who told me completely different info than what was on their own website. The system is beyond broken.
