571 and 972 codes appeared on transcript, wages finally showing on IRS/SSA websites, WMR changed from PATH to processing

I filed my taxes back in mid-April and I've been checking my transcript regularly. Last week I noticed these 571 and 972 codes appeared on my transcript which got me worried. What was even more concerning was that my wages weren't showing up on either the IRS website or the Social Security Administration site. I checked again this morning and my wages are FINALLY showing on both sites!!! Also, my Where's My Refund status changed from PATH message to processing. Does this mean I'm getting closer to receiving my refund? Anyone else experience something similar? How long until I might get my money?

Paige Cantoni

Yes, this is definitely positive progress! The 570 code is a temporary hold on your account, and the 971 indicates that a notice has been generated (likely related to the wage verification). Now that your wages are showing in both systems, the IRS has verified your income, which is why your WMR status has updated from PATH to processing. In most cases, once this verification is complete and the status changes to processing, you should see movement within 1-2 weeks. The next stage would typically be an 846 code (refund issued) on your transcript. Keep checking your transcript daily - that's where you'll see updates before WMR shows anything.

Thank you so much! That makes me feel a lot better. I was getting so frustrated trying to figure out what was going on.

I had these same codes and it took exactly 9 days from seeing the wages update to getting my refund. So there's hope!

Do the codes always mean there's a hold? Mine had these codes but no change for weeks🤔

To clarify for everyone - 570 is ALWAYS a temporary hold, but the reasons vary widely. Could be identity verification, income verification, simple processing delay, or various discrepancies. The 971 just means they're sending you a notice about something, could be informational or requesting action.

I was in a similar situation and the most helpful thing I did was use taxr.ai to actually understand what was happening. I tried googling these codes for hours but couldn't get clear answers specific to my situation. The tool analyzed my transcript, explained all the codes, told me exactly what was happening with my return, and predicted when I'd get my refund - which was spot on! Saved me so much stress and confusion trying to decode IRS language. Seriously, check out https://taxr.ai - it gave me peace of mind knowing exactly what was happening instead of just guessing.

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

It does way more than just read the transcript. It actually analyzes all the codes together to explain your specific situation. Mine had 570/971 too but taxr explained it was just a verification hold due to my wages not being reported yet, not an audit (which I was freaking out about). It also predicted when my refund would come based on historical data analysis. Seriously, anyone dealing with the IRS should use this!

OMG I just tried it and this is AMAZING! It told me exactly what my codes meant together (not just generic explanations) and that my refund should process next week. The peace of mind is worth so much more than what they charge. Why isn't everyone using this?!? 🙌

After weeks of trying to reach the IRS about similar codes on my transcript, I found a way to actually talk to someone! Used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) and got through to an IRS agent in about 40 mins - instead of the usual busy signals and hangups. The agent confirmed my wages were verified and removed the hold. Best money I've spent all year considering I was waiting on a $3700 refund that was just sitting there. Got my deposit 4 days after talking to them.

Does this really work? I've been trying to call for WEEKS and either get disconnected or told the wait is 2+ hours 😡

Yes! It actually connects you through their system so you don't have to keep redialing. They find a way thru when lines aren't busy and then call you back when they have an agent on the line. Talking to a real person got my issue fixed in one call instead of waiting months for the IRS to figure it out themselves.

idk sounds sketchy to me, how do you know its not a scam?

It's not sketchy at all - they don't ask for any personal info or tax details. They just connect you to the real IRS line and notify you when they've gotten through. You talk directly to an actual IRS agent, not them. After 14 failed attempts calling on my own, it was a lifesaver.

Just tried it and IT WORKED!! After wasting 3 days trying to call myself. Finally spoke to someone who explained everything and released my refund. THANK YOU!!! 💯

The PATH message usually means you claimed EITC or ACTC and they can't release refunds with those credits until mid-February (by law). Since you're past that and now showing "processing", that's a good sign. The 570/971 combo usually means they're verifying something, which seems to be your wages in this case. Now that your wages show up, you should be getting your refund soon! 👍

This has been the WORST tax season ever. I've had the same codes since March and nothing has changed. Called 32 times and could never get through. My wages have been showing the whole time and still nothing. The IRS is completely broken. Good luck but don't get your hopes up.

Same. Been waiting 5 months now with same codes. they dont care about us at all.

Not to be that person, but have you actually analyzed your transcript? I thought I was stuck forever too until I used taxr.ai and realized I had a specific issue that needed addressing. Sometimes it's not just a general delay.

Those codes 99% of the time mean they are just verifying your income. The fact that your wages now show up and WMR changed is EXCELLENT news! I bet you'll see an 846 code for refund issued within 7-10 days. That's exactly what happened to me last year - the wait is almost over!

Your return was probably stuck in income verification hell like mine. The IRS and SSA databases don't always sync properly. This is totally normal progress - once your wages show up, processing usually moves pretty quick. You're on the home stretch now!

I'm in the exact same boat! My wages finally showed up yesterday after being missing for weeks, and I got the PATH to processing change too. Crossing fingers for both of us. Plz update when you get your refund so I have some idea when mine might come.

Will do! Hoping we both see that money soon.

As a CPA, I see this all the time. The 570/971 combo with missing wage info almost always means the IRS is just matching your reported income with employer records. Now that wages are showing up, the hold should release automatically. Keep an eye out for cycle code updates on your transcript - that's your best indicator of when the refund will process. Usually 1-2 weeks max after wage verification is complete.

What exactly is a cycle code? I keep seeing this mentioned but don't understand how to read mine.

A cycle code appears on your transcript as an 8-digit number. First 4 digits are the year, 5th digit is always 0 for individual returns, and last 3 digits represent the week of the year + the day of the week. For instance, 20232605 would be 2023, 26th week, Wednesday. When this updates, it means action is being taken on your return.

The irs is a joke. I had a similar situation, but mine dragged on for 11 months. Finally got fed up and called my congressmans office and filed a taxpayer advocate request. It's INSANE that we have to jump through all these hoops just to get our own money back.

This. The system is completely broken. They take our money instantly but make us wait months to get refunds.

I tried calling the taxpayer advocate service and they put me on a 3 month waitlist lol. What a joke.

yeah the TAS is overloaded too. Congressional inquiry was what finally worked for me. They dont want to look bad to elected officials so those get priority.

570 and 971 is usually just automated verification. Nothing to worry bout now that ur wages are showing up. I've been thru this the last 3 years in a row becus my employer always files late. Every year I panic, every year it works out fine lol. The PATH to processing change is a REALLY good sign.

Hey! Just wanted to say that I got my refund last week after having this exact same situation. Transcript showed 570/971, wages missing, then wages appeared, then WMR changed from PATH to processing, then 9 days later I had my refund. The IRS computer system is doing its job - just slowly and in a completely non-transparent way that causes us all anxiety!

That timeline is super helpful, thanks! I'm on day 3 since the change so hopefully about a week more to go.

Pro tip: Don't just rely on WMR for updates. Check your transcript around 3-4am EST on Wednesday/Thursday nights - that's when the IRS systems usually update for that cycle. Also, if you're expecting a direct deposit, check your bank account directly rather than waiting for IRS notifications - sometimes the money shows up before WMR updates.

This is 100% true. Got my $$$ 2 days before WMR showed anything. The transcript is way more accurate than WMR.

I couldn't figure out what all the codes on my transcript meant and spent HOURS watching youtube videos trying to understand the irs lingo. Finally used taxr.ai and it was incredible - explained everything in simple terms and predicted my refund date spot on. Honestly wish I'd known about it months ago instead of all the stress trying to decode everything myself. https://taxr.ai saved my sanity this tax season.

I swear half of tax season stress is just not understanding what's happening behind the scenes. Transparency would solve so much.

After waiting on hold with the IRS for 3 hours 5 different times and getting disconnected, I used claimyr.com to get through. The agent confirmed that my wage verification was complete and the hold would automatically release. Refund hit my account 6 days later. Talking to a human who actually explained what was happening and could see my file was worth every penny.

Just standard verification stuff - name, SSN, address, filing status, amount on last year's return. The agent was actually really nice and walked me through exactly what was happening with my return. Way less stressful than I expected.

Check for an 846 code on your transcript - that's the refund issued code. Once you see that with a date, you'll know exactly when your money is coming. The 570/971 combo without an 846 means you're still in verification, but now that your wages are showing up, the 846 should appear soon!

Molly Hansen

I've learned that all the IRS codes seem scary but are mostly just normal processing steps. The system is ancient and inefficient but it does (usually) work eventually. Your case sounds like standard income verification that's now complete. Deep breaths - your money is coming soon!
