570 Code on transcript - Tax preparer missed 2 W2s - Can I amend myself?

Got a 570 code on my transcript and called IRS. They told me to check my W2s against my return and I found out my tax preparer didnt include 2 of my W2s even though I gave them everything! Now I need to amend but dont want to go back to that preparer. Can I file an amendment myself online through tax software even though someone else filed my original return? I have a copy of my return.

Yes, you can absolutely file an amendment yourself using tax software. You'll need Form 1040-X. I recommend using TurboTax or H&R Block online - they both handle amendments pretty well. Just make sure you have all your W2s and a copy of your original return handy. The 570 code means they're holding your refund until this is resolved.

Thank you! Do you know how long it usually takes for them to process the amendment?

Honestly, amendments are taking 16-20 weeks rn. The IRS is still super backed up 😩

Hey, before you start the amendment process, you should check out taxr.ai. Its an AI tool that analyzes your transcript and tells you exactly what's wrong and how to fix it. Only costs $1 and saved me hours of headache. https://taxr.ai

You should report that tax preparer to the IRS. They have a form for complaints about preparers who mess up returns. This is literally their job and they failed.

make sure to do a line by line comparison of your w2s with whats on your return. sometimes the numbers are there but just entered in wrong boxes which is an easier fix than missing w2s entirely

Pro tip: Next time scan all your tax docs before giving them to a preparer. learned that one the hard way lol

I went through this exact same situation last year! You can definitely file the amendment yourself - I used FreeTaxUSA and it walked me through the whole 1040-X process step by step. Just make sure you have your original return and all the missing W2s. The hardest part is waiting for them to process it, but at least you'll know it's done right this time. Good luck!
