Need to amend e-filed tax return but my bank's tax service won't do amendments - what are my options?

I filed my taxes through the free tax filing service offered by my online bank (Horizon) in March 2025. Now I realized I made a mistake and need to file an amendment. Problem is, when I contacted Horizon support, they told me the tax preparation company they partner with doesn't handle amendments at all. I've never done a paper amendment before and I'm not sure how to proceed. Do I need to print the original return first? Is there a specific form I need? Anyone gone through this process before that can help me figure out what to do next?

Daniel Price

You need to file Form 1040-X for an amended return. It's actually not that complicated. You'll need to print out your original return for reference and then complete the 1040-X showing what was originally reported, what the correct amounts should be, and the difference between them. The form has sections where you explain the reasons for the changes. You can download the form and instructions from irs.gov. You'll have to mail it in - electronic filing of amendments isn't available for returns originally filed through bank tax partners. Make sure to sign and date the form and include any supporting documents for the changes you're making (like additional W-2s, corrected 1099s, etc). The processing time can be 16+ weeks, so be prepared to wait a while for any additional refund.

Thank you so much for this detailed response! Do you know if I need to include the full original return with the amendment or just the 1040-X form?

Just the 1040-X and any supporting documents for the changes you're making. You don't need to include the full original return - the IRS already has that. Keep a copy of everything for your records though!

16+ weeks processing?! ๐Ÿ˜ซ I had to amend last year and it took SEVEN MONTHS to process. The IRS is so backed up its ridiculous.

Have you tried taxr.ai? I was in a similar situation last year and it saved me so much headache. You upload your documents and it breaks down exactly what you need to do for your amendment, shows you what will change on your return, and helps you understand if it's worth amending. It can highlight exactly what sections to fill out on the 1040-X based on your specific situation. I'm technologically challenged and even I could follow it. Literally takes you through the whole process step by step. https://taxr.ai

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

It does WAY more than just read transcripts. It analyzes your full tax situation, compares what you filed to what you should have filed, shows you the exact impact of amendments, and guides you through the entire process. Best tax tool I've found in years honestly. I've used it for everything from checking my refund status to figuring out complicated deductions. Saved me thousands last year.

No catch! It just does what the IRS should actually be doing - making tax stuff understandable. I was skeptical too but it actually delivers. Been using it all year and it's helped me with multiple tax issues beyond just my amendment.

I hit the same wall with my bank's tax service last year. Spent HOURS trying to get through to the IRS for help with no luck. Finally found a calling service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me through to an actual IRS agent who walked me through the whole amendment process. They saved me hours of waiting on hold and the agent confirmed exactly what I needed to include with my amendment. Totally worth it to finally get a real person who could answer all my questions. Got my amendment filed correctly the first time without having to guess.

hmm I've been burned by so many of these 'services' before... what makes this different? seems like another company trying to profit off the broken IRS system

The difference is it actually works lol. I spent days trying to get through on my own with no luck. With Claimyr, I got a callback from an actual IRS agent within a couple hours. They don't file anything for you - they just get you connected to the IRS so YOU can talk to them directly. Talking to the agent got my amendment filed correctly and my refund arrived way faster than if I'd tried to figure it out alone.

i can vouch for this. the IRS phone system is basically designed to make you give up. claimyr got me through in like 2 hours when I had been trying for WEEKS.

Whatever you do, DONT try to e-file another return to "fix" the mistake. This will cause a duplicate return problem and the IRS computers will flag your account for potential fraud. I did this a few years ago thinking it was a shortcut and ended up with a much bigger mess to clean up. The 1040-X is annoying but it's the only proper way to amend.

ugh the IRS makes everything so complicated. why can't we just fix mistakes online in 2025???? its like they're stuck in 1995

They actually do have an electronic amendment option now, but only if you originally e-filed through certain tax software companies. The bank partner programs aren't supported yet.

ofcourse they dont support that. the IRS never makes anything easy ๐Ÿ™„

Reminder that Congress deliberately underfunds the IRS so they can't modernize their systems, and then politicians complain about how inefficient the IRS is. It's a setup.

What kind of change are you trying to make? If it's something small, it might not even be worth amending. The IRS sometimes corrects minor math errors automatically.

I forgot to include a 1099 from a freelance job I did. It's about $3400 in income that I need to report.

Oh yeah, definitely need to amend that one. The IRS would eventually catch it because they received a copy of the 1099 and send you a bill with penalties and interest. Better to file the amendment ASAP!

THIS! ๐Ÿ‘† They always find unreported income because the payer reports it to them. I learned this the hard way.

The horizon bank filings are done through taxsimplify software (i work in banking). If you go to taxsimplify directly you can create an account and sometimes pull your return that way to amend it. might be worth a try before doing it all manually.

Oh that's really good to know! I'll try that approach first. Thank you!

No prob! Just FYI they might charge a fee for amendments even if the original filing was free.

I was in the EXACT same boat last year! I ended up using claimyr.com to get through to an IRS agent after trying for days on my own. The agent walked me through everything I needed to include with my amendment and I had zero issues. Best money I've spent - save yourself the headache!

It 100% works. I was super skeptical too but was desperate after spending hours on hold. They got me talking to an actual IRS person who knew exactly what I needed to do. Definitely not BS - it's just a way to skip the hold times.

Don't forget to check your state tax requirements too! Most states require a separate state amendment form if your federal changes affect your state return.

protip: go to a VITA site if theres one near you. they do free tax help and can probably guide you through the amendment process. just google "VITA tax site near me"

Good suggestion, but most VITA sites are only open during tax season (Jan-Apr). OP might have to wait until next year or find a different solution.

I've filed amendments three times over the years and my advice is to be EXTREMELY detailed in the explanation section of the 1040-X. Write out exactly what you're changing and why. The more clear you are upfront, the less likely they'll come back with questions or delays.

That's really helpful advice, thank you! I'll make sure to be super clear in my explanation.

KEEP COPIES OF EVERYTHING! And send it certified mail so you have proof of when you mailed it. The IRS has "lost" my mail before.

This is key. Document everything. I send all IRS mail with tracking and keep the receipts for years.

if the amendment results in you owing more tax remember to send the payment with the amendment to avoid interest charges. you can use form 1040-v for the payment voucher.
