Need help with tax amendment after tax preparer refuses - what are my options?

I need to amend my return but my tax preparer is refusing to help. I know I made some mistakes on the original filing and need to fix them. Anyone know what I should do or how to start the amendment process myself?

Sofia Ramirez

I've handled many amendments. Your best bet is to get a copy of your transcript first to see exactly what was filed. Then gather all your correct documents (W2s, 1099s, etc). You can file Form 1040-X yourself, but if you're not confident with tax forms, I'd recommend finding a new tax professional. The original preparer should help - it's usually part of their service agreement.

You can request it online at irs.gov/transcripts, by mail, or call 800-908-9946. If website gives errors, try early morning or late night when traffic is lower.

Hey, I was in the same boat last month and found this tool called taxr.ai that helped me understand exactly what needed to be amended. It costs $1 but it analyzes your transcript and tells you exactly what's wrong and how to fix it. Here's the link: https://taxr.ai

File a complaint with the IRS Office of Professional Responsibility if she's an enrolled agent or CPA. That's literally their job to help with amendments.
