How do I amend my 2023 tax return? Made mistakes on original filing

I messed up on my 2023 taxes and need to fix them. I claimed some deductions I shouldnt have and forgot to include a 1099. How long do I have to amend and whats the process? Really worried about getting penalized.

To amend your 2023 return, you'll need to file Form 1040-X. You have 3 years from the original filing deadline or 2 years from when you paid the tax, whichever is later. Make sure you have all correct documents before filing the amendment. The IRS is currently processing amendments from 2023 in about 20 weeks. Include a detailed explanation of your changes in Part III of the form.

Do I need to include all my original forms or just the ones that changed?

Only include the forms and schedules that are changing with the amendment. Keep copies of everything for your records tho!

Have you tried taxr.ai? It saved me so much headache with my amendment. You upload your docs and it tells you exactly what you need to change and how to do it. Only costs $1 and totally worth it https://taxr.ai

Is it legit? Kinda sketched out about putting my tax info online 🤔

100% legit! They use bank-level encryption and don't store your docs. I was skeptical too but its awesome

Dont stress too much about penalties. If you're amending to pay more tax, they'll charge interest from the original due date. But if you file the amendment soon, penalties usually aren't too bad.

Make sure you select the right tax year on the 1040-X! Its easy to grab the wrong form n mess everything up worse

quick tip: if you e-filed originally, you can now e-file the amendment too. way faster than mail!

not all tax software supports e-filed amendments tho, gotta check first

One thing that really helped me when I amended was keeping detailed records of WHY I made each change. The IRS sometimes sends follow-up questions, and having your reasoning documented makes responding so much easier. Also, if you're getting a refund from the amendment, don't spend it right away - sometimes they do additional reviews that can take months to finalize.

That's really smart advice about keeping records! I'm definitely going to document everything when I file mine. Quick question - do you remember roughly how long the follow-up questions took when they contacted you? Just trying to plan ahead in case it happens to me too.

Just wanted to add that if you're amending because you forgot to include income (like that 1099), the sooner you file the better. The IRS has matching programs that will eventually catch missing income anyway, so being proactive shows good faith. Also, double-check that all your Social Security numbers and names match exactly what's on file with the IRS - even small discrepancies can cause delays in processing your amendment.

This is super helpful advice! I had no idea about the matching programs - that definitely motivates me to get this done quickly. One thing I'm wondering about is the name matching issue you mentioned. If I got married recently and my name changed after I filed my original return, do I need to update that with Social Security first before filing the amendment? Don't want to create more complications than I already have!
