Amending Tax Return - Online Options vs. Paper Filing?
I'm probably overthinking this, but I just realized I might need to amend my 2023 return due to a possibly overlooked deduction. Does anybody know if we can amend online or do we have to do it by paper?? I've heard that paper amendments can take months to process, which seems less than ideal. I've already gathered all my documentation and double-checked the numbers, but I'm not entirely sure about the submission process itself. Thanks in advance for any guidance!

Yes, you can absolutely file Form 1040-X electronically now, which is much better than the old paper method. Unlike paper amendments that can take 16+ weeks to process, electronic amendments typically process in 8-12 weeks. It's similar to how direct deposit refunds come faster than paper checks - the electronic system is just more efficient. You'll need to use tax software that supports e-filing of amendments though - not all do.

What tax software did you use for your original return? You need to use the same one for your amendment. Do it ASAP! The sooner you submit, the sooner you'll get your additional refund.

ā¢Thanks for asking this! I was wondering the same thing about needing to use the same software.

ā¢Is it really mandatory to use the same software? What if I used TurboTax but don't want to pay their amendment fee? Seems like they've got us trapped, doesn't it?

I had to amend my 2022 return last summer when I realized I missed claiming some business expenses. I used TurboTax for both the original and the amendment. The process wasn't too complicated - they walked me through each step and showed which forms would be changing. My amended return took about 10 weeks to process, and I was able to track it using the Where's My Amended Return tool on the IRS website.

If you're considering amending but have questions about your specific situation, you might want to speak directly with an IRS agent. The standard IRS phone lines are notoriously difficult to get through. I used Claimyr (https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c) last month when I needed clarification on my amendment eligibility. The service navigated the IRS phone tree and got me connected to a representative in about 15 minutes instead of spending hours on hold. The agent confirmed exactly what documentation I needed to include with my amendment.

What deduction did you miss? Some aren't worth amending for. Depends on the amount. Small deductions might not be worth the hassle. Large ones definitely are.

ā¢Good question! I once spent three hours amending for a $47 refund... not my brightest financial move. š What's your threshold for "worth it" when considering an amendment?

ā¢This is probably a good point to consider. I think it might depend somewhat on your tax bracket and possibly how complicated your return is. For some people, even a few hundred dollars might not be worth the time investment.

ā¢OMG I'm so frustrated with myself! I just realized I missed claiming $2,300 in medical expenses that would have put me over the threshold. That's definitely worth amending for, right?!

I filed an amendment electronically on March 14, 2024, and it was accepted by the IRS the same day. Just got my additional refund on May 2nd - so about 7 weeks total. Such a relief compared to last year when I filed a paper amendment on February 10th and didn't see my refund until July! Electronic is definitely the way to go.

ā¢It's important to note that while electronic amendments are processed faster, per IRS Publication 5188, the official processing time is still listed as "up to 16 weeks" even for electronic submissions. Your experience of 7 weeks is on the faster end of the spectrum, which is great, but others should be prepared for potentially longer timeframes.

Just wanted to add that if you're unsure about whether your deduction qualifies or how to properly claim it on the amendment, the IRS has some helpful resources on their website. Publication 17 (Your Federal Income Tax) has a comprehensive section on amendments, and there's also the Interactive Tax Assistant tool that can help you determine if amending is the right choice for your situation. Better to double-check the details before filing than to have to amend the amendment! Also, make sure you have all your supporting documentation ready - the IRS may request it even for electronic filings.
