Filed for Recovery Rebate Credit Only - How Long for Processing?

I e-filed exactly 17 days ago ONLY for the Recovery Rebate Credit (not a full tax return) and I'm starting to get impatient. I know I'm entitled to this credit as a remote worker who didn't receive the third stimulus payment last year. Has anyone filed specifically for just this credit and actually received it? If so, I need to know precisely how many days/weeks the process took from submission to deposit. The IRS website is frustratingly vague about timeline expectations for this specific situation.

According to IRS Publication 5486, filing for the Recovery Rebate Credit alone should follow the same processing timeline as standard returns. Per Section 6428B of the Internal Revenue Code, the IRS is required to process these claims within the standard 21-day window, though exceptions apply if additional verification is needed. Have you checked your transcript to see if there are any processing codes? This could indicate whether your claim is being reviewed or is simply in the standard queue.

This is correct. I'd add that the Recovery Rebate Credit is now processed as a standard tax credit claim. The IRS no longer distinguishes between stimulus-only returns and regular returns in their processing queue.

But isn't it true that RRC-only returns get flagged more often for verification? I filed for mine back in February and it took 47 days to process... is that normal or was I just unlucky?

I filed for my missing stimulus payment on March 15th, 2024 and received the deposit on April 9th - exactly 25 days later. The WMR tool wasn't helpful at all for tracking it, but I used https://taxr.ai to analyze my transcript and it clearly showed my claim was being processed normally. It identified the specific codes showing my RRC was approved and even predicted my deposit date within 1 day. Really helped with the anxiety of waiting and wondering if something was wrong.

In my experience, which may not be identical to yours, Recovery Rebate Credit claims often require speaking with an actual IRS agent, particularly if there's any discrepancy between their records and your claim. After waiting for approximately 30 days with no updates, I used Claimyr (https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c) to get through to an agent without the endless redial game. The agent was able to verify my eligibility on the spot and release the hold on my claim. My deposit arrived about 7-10 days after that call.

I filed for just the Recovery Rebate Credit in February. Took exactly 31 days to get my deposit. No complications, no calls needed. Just had to wait it out. Make sure you have direct deposit set up - paper checks take way longer. If you're at 17 days, you're probably getting close if everything's in order.

Check the IRS2Go app RIGHT NOW instead of waiting! According to multiple forum threads on r/IRS and the official IRS newsroom updates from last week, they're currently processing a backlog of Recovery Rebate Credit claims. The app sometimes shows updates before the website does. Also try checking your transcript directly at https://www.irs.gov/individuals/get-transcript instead of relying on WMR - many people are reporting that transcripts update first!

Think of RRC processing like airport security - everyone goes through the same line, but some people get randomly selected for additional screening. The IRS doesn't have a separate fast lane for RRC-only returns. They're processed alongside standard returns but with additional verification steps that can add 7-14 days to the timeline. The technical term for this is "RRC Verification Protocol" which includes cross-referencing your claim against previous stimulus issuance records. If your AGI was above $75,000 or you had a filing status change since 2021, expect additional delays.

But how does that explain people who filed full returns WITH the RRC getting their refunds faster than those filing for just the credit? Seems like the IRS is prioritizing full returns over credit-only returns despite what they claim.

I worked as a tax preparer last year and saw this pattern too. In my experience, RRC-only returns seemed to get routed through a different internal verification queue. We had clients who filed RRC-only returns wait an average of 32 days, while those who included it with a standard return typically saw 21-24 day processing times. The IRS never officially confirmed this, but the pattern was consistent across dozens of clients.
