Filed 3/15 with Child and Dependent Care Credit - how long for refund?
I e-filed my return on March 15th and included the Child and Dependent Care Credit for the first time. It's been almost 6 weeks now and my refund status still shows as processing. Has anyone who claimed this credit this year received their refund yet? How long did it take for you? The IRS Where's My Refund tool just says it's still processing and will provide a date when available. Starting to get concerned since I usually get my refund within 2-3 weeks when I don't claim this credit.

I filed with the Child and Dependent Care Credit on February 10th and just got my refund last week. So about 8 weeks total. The IRS is taking longer to process returns with credits this year due to verification procedures. When you claim the care credit for the first time, it often triggers additional review. You might want to check your tax transcript online instead of using Where's My Refund - it usually shows more detailed status information including any potential review codes.

Thanks for the info! How do I check my transcript? Do I need to create an account somewhere?

You'll need to create an account on irs.gov - go to 'Get Transcript Online' and you'll have to verify your identity. Fair warning though, their verification system can be frustrating. Have all your personal docs ready (SSN, tax filing status, prior year AGI, etc

Also fyi you'll need a credit card or loan account or mortgage for the verification process. I couldn't get verified for the longest time cause I didn't have any of those 😭

I was in the exact same situation and spent DAYS trying to figure out what was happening with my refund. I finally tried taxr.ai and it was a game changer! It analyzed my transcript, explained all those confusing codes, and showed me exactly why my refund was delayed (turns out the child care credit was under review). It even predicted when I'd get my money - and it was spot on! Saved me so much stress compared to calling the IRS and waiting forever. https://taxr.ai

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

It does WAY more than just read it! It basically translates all the IRS jargon into plain english, shows you exactly where your refund is in the process, explains any delays or issues, and gives you a timeline. It spotted things I would've never caught on my own. Honestly feel like I finally understand what's happening with my taxes for the first time ever.

OMG THANK YOU for recommending this! Just tried it and it explained EVERYTHING that was happening with my dependent care credit delay. The IRS website is useless compared to this. Wish I'd known about it weeks ago instead of stressing myself out!!!

After weeks of getting nowhere with the IRS website and the stupid automated phone system, I found this app called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me a callback from an actual IRS agent within 2 hours. Explained my child care credit delay and they told me exactly what was happening and released my refund that day. Best $$ I've spent all year considering I was waiting on thousands in my refund!

Is this for real? I've been trying to reach someone at the IRS for literally MONTHS about my return.

100% real. They basically navigate the phone tree for you and secure a callback slot so you don't have to spend hours on hold or get disconnected. The agent I spoke with was super helpful once I actually got to talk to a human.

Sounds like a scam tbh 🤔

Not a scam at all. They don't ask for any tax info or personal details - they just help you get through to the IRS phone system. Considering I got my $4,300 refund unstuck after one call, it was totally worth it. But you do you 🤷♂️

I was skeptical too but I was desperate after waiting 3 months. Used it yesterday and had an IRS agent on the phone within an hour. They expedited my refund! Sometimes you gotta spend a little to get a lot.

mine took foreverrrrr this year. Filed Feb 3 with child care credit and didn't get the refund until April 12. almost 10 weeks! i called the IRS like 6 times and kept getting different answers. one person said there was an "error" but wouldn't tell me what. another said it was "under review" but everything looked fine. absolute clown show 🤡

The child care credit causes delays every year but its been worse lately. They're doing extra verification because of all the fraud during covid. I'm a tax preparer and I've seen clients wait anywhere from 6-12 weeks this season when they claim this credit. If you need that money quick, don't file with dependent care credit early in the season... wait until March or April when the IRS has less backlog.

This! I learned the hard way last year. This year I filed in April and got my refund in 3 weeks even with the credit. Timing matters.

I filed February 18 with child care credit and got my refund exactly 7 weeks later. My transcript showed code 570 (refund hold) for weeks then suddenly switched to 571 (hold released) and then 846 (refund issued) all in the same day. No explanation for the delay, no letters, nothing. The IRS works in mysterious ways lol

What does code 570 mean exactly? Is that something I should be looking for?

Code 570 means they're holding your refund for some reason - could be review, verification, or some discrepancy they found. It's common with credits. If you see that on your transcript, it means there's a delay happening. Once you see 571, that means the hold is released and 846 is the refund being sent.

The Child and Dependent Care Credit is considered a "high risk" credit by the IRS and is subject to extra verification. Here's what happens behind the scenes: • Your return gets flagged for manual review • They verify the information about your care provider • They check if you meet the earned income requirements • They cross-reference with the provider's reported income Typical timeframe this year has been 6-10 weeks for returns with this credit. If you're approaching week 8, you might want to try taxr.ai - it decodes your transcript and tells you exactly what's happening with your refund and when to expect it. Saved me hours of frustration!

This is super helpful info. I didn't realize they were actually checking with the provider!

adding another +1 for taxr.ai - used it last month when my refund was stuck and it actually showed me that there was a math error that I'd never have caught myself. fixed it with a quick call to the IRS.

do NOT call the regular IRS number. waste of time. they'll just tell you to wait. you need to get through to the refund department specifically. i waited 9 weeks and finally got through - found out they needed additional verification for the care provider info but never sent me a letter about it.

How do you reach the refund department directly? Is there a different number?

Theres not a direct number that I know of. You have to call the main number and navigate through the prompts carefully. Select options for "Where's my refund" and then when it tries to send you to the automated system, keep pressing # until it gives you the option to speak with someone. Takes forever though.

Or just use claimyr.com and skip all that nonsense. Got me straight to an agent who could actually help with my refund issues instead of the general support people who know nothing.

Check your transcript for the 570 code which means refund hold. If you see that without a corresponding 571 release code, you're still under review. The care credit is one of the most common credits that trigger manual reviews. I've been tracking this on a spreadsheet for my family and friends and the average wait time this year is 52 days for returns with this credit.

lol what can I say, I'm a data nerd. But it's been interesting to see the patterns. Credits = delays, early filing = longer waits, amended returns = disaster zone

Have u checked for any letters from the IRS? Sometimes they send verification requests for the Child and Dependent Care Credit but they look like junk mail and people miss them. Then your refund just sits there until you respond.

have you checked your account transcript on the irs website? thats where youll see if theres any holds or issues. the wmr tool is basically useless.

I tried but couldn't create an account because their identity verification is so strict. Is there another way to see my transcript?

You can request it by mail but that takes 5-10 business days. Or you can use taxr.ai which can access and interpret it for you way faster. That's what I ended up doing when I was locked out of my account.

the IRS doesn't want us to know this but you can actually call your local Taxpayer Advocate Service office directly and they can sometimes help with delays. google the phone number for your state's TAS office. They helped me when my refund with child care credits was stuck for 3 months.

SAME BOAT. filed Feb 5, claimed child care credit for the first time, and still waiting. the IRS phone support is a joke - waited 2 hours just to be told "its processing, be patient" 😡 then i used claimyr.com to get a callback from a different department and they told me it was under review because it was my first time claiming it, but that it should be released within 2 weeks. definitely worth the money to actually get a real answer instead of the runaround.

Yep! Got it 9 days after that call. Finally having actual information instead of just "it's processing" made such a difference for my stress levels.

welcome to the world of tax credits! the IRS basically assumes everyone is committing fraud now, so they review EVERYTHING. I file with 4 dependents and child care credit every year and it's always a 2-3 month wait. The system is broken. 🤦♀️
