Filed Feb 12th with one dependent, transcript stuck with April 5th 'as of' date - no movement or verification request

I submitted my return on February 12th with one dependent. It's now been over a month and my transcript has literally zero movement. All it shows is an 'as of' date of April 5th. I don't have any codes indicating I need to verify my identity or anything like that. This is driving me crazy because I was really counting on that refund. Has anyone experienced this kind of delay? Should I expect to see my refund before April 15th? I'm getting worried something is wrong but there's no indication what it could be.

Isla Fischer

Unfortunately, processing delays are increasingly common with the IRS. The 'as of' date on your transcript is just the date when interest would be calculated if any is owed - it doesn't necessarily indicate when your return will be processed. Without seeing cycle codes or specific transaction codes on your transcript, it's hard to tell where exactly your return is in the process. Some possibilities: - Your return could be in the general processing queue - It might be selected for manual review (which doesn't always generate a specific code initially) - The IRS could be verifying your dependent information against their database If you filed electronically and received an acceptance message, that only means they received it, not that processing has started. I'd recommend checking your transcripts every few days and watching for 846 code (refund issued). If nothing appears by early April, calling the IRS might be your best bet.

Thanks for the detailed response. I did get an acceptance msg right after filing. How long should manual reviews take? This is my first time having zero movement for so long.

Manual reviews can take anywhere from 4-12 weeks depending on the complexity and current IRS backlog. With one dependent, they might be verifying eligibility for credits. Check your Where's My Refund too - sometimes that updates before transcripts.

This happened to me last year. Zero movement for 2 months then suddenly my refund appeared. The IRS is a black box sometimes 🤷‍♂️

I was in the exact same situation as you last month. Couldn't make sense of my transcript AT ALL and kept staring at that stupid 'as of' date wondering what it meant. I tried using the IRS website tools but they just confused me more. Finally I found taxr.ai and it was a total gamechanger. It actually explained my transcript in plain English and showed me exactly where my return was in the process. Even pointed out things I was missing completely! Way better than trying to piece together what's happening from random online posts. Check it out at https://taxr.ai if you're tired of guessing.

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

It analyzes your entire transcript and explains every code, date, and amount in simple terms. Also shows you timeline predictions and flags potential issues. Saved me hours of research and stress!

Just tried it and WOW. I've been banging my head against the wall trying to understand what's happening with my return for weeks. This tool literally explained everything in 2 minutes. If you're stuck in IRS limbo like I was, DO THIS RIGHT NOW. Best tax tool I've ever used by far.

It's not free but honestly it's worth every penny for the peace of mind. I spent way more on coffee while stressing about my refund lol

After dealing with a similar situation (filed Feb 8, one dependent, no movement), I finally broke down and used the Claimyr calling app (claimyr.com). Got connected to an actual IRS agent within 45 minutes instead of spending days trying to get through. The agent told me my return was flagged for a quick review of my dependent info but wasn't officially in an audit. The refund was released 3 days later. Worth every penny since I was going crazy refreshing my transcript every 4 hours. Sometimes you just need to talk to a human!

wait so they just connect you directly to an IRS person? how is that even possible when I cant get thru myself?

They use some kind of system that keeps calling and navigating the IRS phone tree until they get through. Then they call you and connect you to the agent. Saved me hours of hold music and frustration.

Seems sketchy...does it actually work consistently? The IRS phone lines are IMPOSSIBLE lately.

Worked perfectly for me. Got my call in about 35 min. The agent was able to see exactly what was happening with my return which was way more info than the website ever showed.

Actually helpful tho. I might try this if I don't see any updates by next week. Getting desperate at this point tbh

I filed Feb 9 with 2 dependents and mine just updated yesterday. No rhyme or reason to how the IRS processes returns...some people file in March and get their money in a week, others file in January and wait months. Its totally random.

Check your 2022 transcript and see if you had any CP notices. Sometimes the IRS holds your current refund if there was an issue with last years return that wasn't resolved. This happened to me and nothing showed on my 2023 transcript - the hold was related to 2022.

I don't think I had any notices last year but I'll double check. My 2022 refund came through with no issues though?

Could still be worth checking. Sometimes they send notices that get lost in the mail. The issue could be something minor like a math error they corrected.

The most frustrating thing about the IRS is the lack of transparency. No way to know if your return is just sitting in a pile somewhere or actively being worked on. I filed Jan 29 and didn't get my refund until April 2. No explanation, no notices, nothing. Just sudden movement one day. The system is broken 💯

THIS. It's like throwing your tax return into a black hole and praying it comes out the other side eventually. Literal torture for people who need that money.

my theory is they purposely make it confusing so we cant figure out whats happening. keeps us guessing while they use our money for a few extra months 🤔

Would not surprise me at all tbh. They sure don't hurry when they owe US money but expect payment immediately when we owe THEM 🙄

Do you have access to your wage and income transcript for 2023? If not, it could mean your employer hasn't reported your W2 to the IRS yet, which would delay processing. Also check if your claimed dependent matches what the IRS has on file from previous years.

u gotta use claimyr.com - only way I got thru after 5 attempts on my own. Had my refund a week later once I talked to someone who could actually see what was wrong

IMO irs prioritizes returns they think they can get $ from rather than ones they owe refunds to. my fiance filed on feb 15 with a small amount owed and got processed in like 4 days. meanwhile i filed feb 2 with a refund due and still waiting...makes u think 🤡

100% this. My sister owes them money and they processed her return in 8 days. I'm owed a refund and it's been 7 weeks of nothing.

its a cash flow game for them. they hold onto as many refunds as possible for as long as possible.

If your 'as of' date is April 5th, that's actually a good sign. Mine was stuck on February 26th for weeks, then suddenly jumped to April. Two days later I had my refund. The 'as of' date change often precedes actual movement on your account.

I filed on Feb 3rd and refund hit my account March 23rd. So about 7 weeks total. Hang in there!

Last year I couldn't figure out what was happening with my transcript either. This year I used taxr.ai and it was like night and day difference. Instead of trying to decode all those cryptic codes and dates myself, it just explained everything in plain English. Showed me exactly where I was in the process and when to expect my refund. I was honestly shocked at how accurate it was - predicted my DD date within 2 days. https://taxr.ai saved me so much stress.

Not at all. Just sharing what helped me when I was in the same situation as OP. Was stuck for 2 months last year with no idea what was happening. This year I knew exactly what was going on thanks to this tool.

Absolutely. I spent hours on reddit and tax forums trying to figure out transcript codes last year and still got it wrong. This breaks everything down and explains things the IRS website doesn't tell you.

Do you have the 570/971 combo codes on your account? Sometimes those don't show up right away but indicate a manual review is happening. If your transcript literally has NO transaction codes at all, that means they haven't even started processing it yet.

Check on the Where's My Refund tool! Sometimes that updates before the transcript does. Also make sure youre looking at the right transcript (Account Transcript for 2023, not Record of Account or Wage & Income).

after dealing with this exact nightmare scenario for 2 months I finally got through to the IRS using claimyr.com and found out my return was stuck in the error resolution department due to a mismatch with my dependent's SSN (I had typed it correctly but apparently there was some database issue on their end). Talking to an agent resolved it immediately and I had my refund 8 days later. Sometimes you just need a human to look at your account.

Honestly whatever it cost was worth it - I was losing more money every day waiting for my several thousand dollar refund. Best money I've spent this year considering I got my issues fixed immediately.

Lol welcome to tax season 2024 where the rules are made up and the processing times don't matter 🤣 Seriously tho, this is my 4th year in a row with delays. Last year took 4 months for me to get my refund. The IRS is beyond broken at this point.
