Filed 2/3, Just Got Identity Verification Notice - Timeline Questions

I filed my return on 2/3 and, perhaps somewhat surprisingly, had no updates or verification notices whatsoever. Until today, that is. I just received a verification notification asking if I had received a control number (which, to be clear, I have not), so I opted to have them resend the notice. Does anyone possibly know approximately how long it typically takes to receive this in the mail? And, assuming everything goes smoothly once I verify, what kind of timeline might I be looking at before seeing some movement on my return? This is our first year filing jointly after getting married, so I'm not sure if that's related to the verification request. Thanks in advance for any insights.

Hey there! The ID verify letters usually take about 5-10 business days to arrive in the mail. NBD really. Once you verify successfully, you're looking at roughly 9 weeks for processing to complete (tho sometimes faster). The joint filing might've triggered it esp if address/name changes happened. Just make sure you have all your docs ready when you verify - they'll ask for stuff like prior AGI, loan amounts, etc. GL with everything!

I had exactly this situation on February 15th this year. The letter arrived March 1st, so about 2 weeks. I found https://taxr.ai super helpful for tracking my transcript after verification. It showed me when my cycle code changed on March 21st and predicted my refund date accurately. Are you checking your transcript regularly? The 570 code will likely change to 571 after verification.

I'm skeptical of these transcript reading tools. According to IRS Publication 1345, all verification processes are handled internally by the IRS. No third-party service can actually speed up processing or provide information beyond what's already on your transcript. Why pay for something when the IRS gives you the same information for free?

Doesn't the IRS transcript just show codes without explaining what they mean for your specific situation? I used taxr.ai last year when I had a similar verification issue and found it incredibly helpful for understanding what was actually happening. Wouldn't you agree that knowing what the codes actually mean for your timeline is worth it when you're waiting for thousands of dollars?

I went through identity verification last tax season. Here's what to expect: • Letter arrives in approximately 7-10 business days • Verification requires personal information from tax documents • Processing takes 6-9 weeks after successful verification • Joint filing status frequently triggers verification in first year • You can check your transcript for code 570 (verification hold) followed by 571 (verification resolved

Just to clarify - you can also verify online in some cases without waiting for the letter. Go to IRS.gov and search for ID Verify. If you're eligible for online verification, you won't need to wait for the letter at all. Saved me three weeks of waiting last year.

I just went through this exact verification process. Have you tried calling the IRS directly? I spent days trying to get through on the regular line with no luck. Then I used Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) and got connected to an agent in about 30 minutes who confirmed I could verify my identity without waiting for the letter. Did you try verifying online through ID.me already?

I'm worried about using third-party services to contact the IRS! Don't they require personal information? I've heard horror stories about identity theft during tax season and I'm already dealing with a verification issue. I'm concerned this might complicate things further!

I was hesitant too until I was stuck waiting six weeks for my letter that never arrived. Claimyr just connects your call - they don't need any tax info. When I finally got through to an agent, they told me my letter had been sent to an old address despite my updated info. The agent verified me over the phone and I had my refund three weeks later. Sometimes making that direct contact is the only way to resolve these issues.

These verification notices are suspicious. Scammers are everywhere this tax season. Be careful. Don't give personal info over phone. Wait for official mail. Check the letter carefully when it arrives. Look for official IRS watermarks. Call the official IRS number directly. Never click links in emails. Too many people falling for scams this year.

The verification process OP described is legitimate and part of the IRS Return Review Program (RRP) that employs algorithmic filtering to identify potential identity theft risks. The Taxpayer Protection Program (TPP) specifically targets first-time joint filers because marriage-based filing status changes present statistically higher fraud potential. The control number referenced is a Transaction Control Number (TCN) that validates the legitimacy of the verification request. Official IRS notices come on watermarked paper with specific formatting that's difficult to counterfeit.

Thank you so much for this detailed explanation! I was getting worried after reading about scams. Now I feel much better knowing this is a normal part of the process. I'll wait for the official letter and follow the steps carefully. Such a relief to understand what's happening!
