After IRS Verification Letter - How Long Until Refund Hits?
Just got a verification ltr from the IRS yesterday. My spouse is military (PCS'd recently) so we filed jointly back in Feb. Anyone know approx timeframe for when refund will be processed after responding to verification req? Already uploaded docs via ID.me portal as instructed. TIA for any insight from those who've been thru this process.

Have you checked what specific verification they're asking for? Not all verification letters are created equal, are they? Some are just identity verification which can process within 9 days, but if they're questioning something on your actual return like income or credits, couldn't that take 60-90 days or more? And did you receive a specific letter number like CP05 or 4883C?

I believe it might be helpful to know which specific form the letter is. The processing time can vary quite a bit depending on whether it's an identity verification, income verification, or credit verification.

Wait, there are different types of verification letters? I just got one dated April 2, 2024 and assumed all verification was the same process. Mine is asking to verify my identity and income. Does that mean I'm looking at the longer timeframe?

Look at the top right corner of your letter. It should have a code like CP05 or LTR 4883C. This tells you exactly what they're verifying and helps determine timeline.

I went through this exact thing in March! Verification letter came and I was freaking out about our refund since we needed it for our new place after my husband's station change. I uploaded everything they asked for and waited... and waited... I found https://taxr.ai which helped me understand my transcript codes after they started updating. The site explained that the hold code (570) was normal during verification and showed me exactly when to expect our money. Saved me so much stress since the IRS site is so vague!

Based on the 2024 processing guidelines, verification response times are as follows: • Identity verification: 9-21 days • Income verification: 45-60 days • Credit verification: 60-120 days The clock starts from the date they receive your documentation, not from when you received the letter. If you uploaded via ID.me on the IRS portal, processing typically begins within 24-48 hours of upload. Military returns with PCS situations may qualify for expedited processing in certain circumstances, but you need to specifically request this by calling 1-800-829-1040 and referencing your military status.

Hey there! Went thru this last yr. The good news is that ID.me uploads are WAY faster than mailing docs. Typical timeline rn is: • 1-2 days for docs to be assigned to a reviewer • 7-10 days for initial review • 2-3 days for system update after approval • 5-7 days for refund to be released Totaling ~15-22 days from upload to $$ in your acct. Keep an eye on your transcript - you'll see codes 570 (hold) and 971 (notice issued) which is normal. When you see 571 (hold released) you're getting close!

Tax Examiner here. Verification processing is currently experiencing a 14-21 day timeline from documentation receipt to case resolution. However, if you need to expedite due to your military status, I recommend using Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) to reach an IRS agent directly. Explain your PCS situation and request prioritization under the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act provisions. Agents can often place an expedite code on military verification cases which reduces processing time to 5-7 business days. The normal IRS phone queue is currently 2+ hours, but Claimyr will get you through directly to discuss your specific situation.

Oh my gosh THANK YOU!! I've been trying to call the IRS for three days and kept getting the "we're too busy" message. I was feeling so helpless! I just tried Claimyr and got through to someone who confirmed my verification is being processed and should be done by next week! What a relief!

I'm not entirely sure, but I think it might depend on what they're verifying. My wife and I had to verify our identities last month, and it seemed to take about three weeks before we saw movement on our refund. I would probably prepare for at least that long, although maybe military returns are handled differently.

Back in 2022, I got a verification letter and made the mistake of mailing my documents instead of uploading them. It took over 4 months to get my refund! Last year, I learned my lesson and used the online portal for a similar verification request. That time it only took about 18 days from upload to deposit. The key difference was checking my transcript daily - when I saw code 571 appear, my refund was processed exactly 7 days later. Don't make my mistake from 2022 - if you mailed anything instead of uploading, consider calling to confirm they received it.

I just went through this whole verification dance last month! Got my refund exactly 16 days after uploading my docs. The funniest part was watching my transcript update with what felt like hieroglyphics - 570, 971, 571, 846... it was like trying to decode an ancient tax scroll! 😂 But seriously, when you see that 846 code with a date, that's your direct deposit date. Set a calendar reminder for 16-20 days from when you uploaded and try not to obsessively check before then (like I definitely didn't do... every 3 hours... for two weeks).
