Filed 2/2, IRS Giving Different Answers Each Call - ID Verify? Under Review? Transcript Shows Nothing
Filed/accepted 2/2/2024. Per IRC Section 6402(a), the IRS should process standard refunds within 21 days, but I'm well beyond that timeframe now. Every time I call the IRS, they tell me something completely different: • First representative said everything is fine, just needs more time (citing internal backlog per Publication 5181) • Next said I need to ID verify (referencing Section 6103(b)(2)(A) identity protection measures) • Next person said need to ID verify, letter went out 2/22; that's part 1. Then, part 2; under review (possible Section 6001 documentation review) I never can see any notifications in my account. My transcript consistently shows "no return received" status. This is our first year filing jointly as newlyweds, so I'm concerned about potential processing delays. Anyone have similar experience? Any resolution? Would greatly appreciate any insights from those who've navigated this successfully.

I've seen this exact pattern before during the 2022 filing season. Different answers on every call is unfortunately common with the IRS these days. Last year, they told my brother he needed to verify his identity but the letter never arrived. Have you checked your mail carefully? In my experience, those verification letters can look like junk mail sometimes.

I'm not entirely convinced the letters always get sent when they say they do... My "identity verification letter" supposedly went out on January 30th, but I didn't receive anything until almost March. Might be worth checking if they have the correct mailing address on file?

The transcript showing "no return received" is actually a key indicator here! I had the exact same situation with Form 1040 processing codes showing nothing. Turns out my return was placed in the Identity Verification queue (TC 971) but hadn't been assigned a processing code yet. Once I completed verification, my transcript updated within 72 hours and DDD appeared 9 days later. The system architecture separates verification from normal processing channels.

I went through this exact nightmare last year. Here's what worked for me: • Don't wait for the letter - go directly to ID.me verification portal • Check if you can verify online at https://www.irs.gov/identity-theft-fraud-scams/identity-verification-for-irs-letter-recipients • Call the specific ID verification number: 800-830-5084 (different than regular IRS line) • Ask specifically for a "processing delay specialist" when you call • Request they check if you're in the "Error Resolution System" (ERS) The regular agents often don't have visibility into verification status. I pushed through this by being persistent with the specialized departments.

This is incredibly helpful! I was looking through the IRS.gov knowledge base and couldn't find this specific verification pathway. Have you noticed if the verification requirements differ for joint filers vs individual? According to the IRS Filing Season Statistics page, newly married filers do seem to face additional verification hurdles.

Isn't it amazing how frustrating this process can be? I spent 4 days trying to reach someone at the IRS last month. Called over 30 times and kept getting disconnected. Don't we deserve better from our tax system? I finally tried Claimyr (https://www.claimyr.com) and they got me through to an actual IRS agent in about 15 minutes. The agent confirmed I needed identity verification and walked me through the whole process on the spot. Why doesn't the IRS just tell everyone about the verification requirement upfront? Saved me weeks of waiting for a letter that might never have arrived.

You might want to check if you have any indicators of the Path Act delay, which could potentially explain some of the processing issues. Generally speaking, if you claimed EITC or ACTC, your return might be held for additional review until approximately mid-February, though this shouldn't necessarily affect transcript visibility. In terms of technical details, the "no return received" transcript status usually indicates one of three possibilities: 1. Return is in pre-processing queue (fairly common this year) 2. Return has been selected for identity verification 3. Return has potential matching issues with W-2/1099 data The inconsistent answers suggest your return is likely in a specialized processing queue that regular CSRs don't have complete visibility into.

Based on the Transaction Code patterns you're describing, your return is almost certainly in the Identity Verification holding pattern. The fact that your WMR doesn't show the standard "still processing" message and your transcript shows no return filed are the verification hallmarks. The quickest resolution path is to proactively complete ID verification through the IRS Identity Verification Service. You don't need to wait for the letter - the system already has you flagged. Complete verification online, then expect approximately 9-21 days for processing completion. This will save you significant refund turnaround time versus waiting for correspondence.

I had this exact situation in February. Different answers every time I called. My transcript showed nothing for weeks. Here's what worked: I went directly to the ID verification portal and verified myself even though I never got a letter. Three days later my transcript updated. Money was in my account 8 days after that. Don't wait for them to get their act together - be proactive and verify yourself online. The system is broken but you can work around it.
