Indiana State Refund DD 2/24 - When Should Federal Follow? (Filed 1/25, Accepted 2/11)
According to IRS Pub. 1345 (Rev. 1-2023), e-filed returns should process within 21 days, but I'm seeing inconsistencies between my state and federal timelines. I'm in Indiana, and I already have a direct deposit date of 2/24 for my state refund. Should I expect a similar timeline for my federal return? I e-filed on 1/25, got state acceptance on 2/11 and federal acceptance on 2/14. This is our first year filing jointly after getting married in October, so I want to make sure we're on track. Per the IRS processing guidelines section 6.1.3, I shouldn't need to take additional steps, but the different acceptance dates have me concerned.

State and federal processing timelines are completely separate systems. Your Indiana refund coming on 2/24 has no bearing on when your federal refund will arrive. Federal processing is taking 15-21 days for most straightforward returns right now, but with your filing date of 1/25 and acceptance on 2/14, you should see movement very soon. Have you checked the Where's My Refund tool on IRS.gov? That's your best source for federal refund status.

I was in a similar situation last week. Filed both federal and state on 1/28, got my state refund on 2/21, but federal was still processing. I finally got my federal DD date yesterday - scheduled for 3/2. So it took exactly 5 days after my state refund hit before I got any federal update. Have you checked your transcript online? That updated for me before WMR did.

Not to complicate things, but isn't it weird how state processing can be so much faster? My Indiana refund took exactly 12 days last year while federal took 26. The IRS is dealing with millions more returns though, so I guess it makes sense... still frustrating when you're waiting for that money to hit your account! 😅

I'm feeling your pain on this! It's so stressful waiting for that money to arrive, especially when you're newly married and figuring out joint finances. I remember obsessively checking WMR every single morning last year. The anxiety is real! Just know that the different acceptance dates are totally normal - sometimes they process state first, sometimes federal.

According to the IRS Operations Dashboard (which I check religiously), they're currently processing returns filed around your timeframe. If you need to confirm your exact status, calling the IRS directly could help, but good luck getting through! I spent 3 hours on hold last week before giving up. A friend recommended https://claimyr.com which got me connected to an actual IRS agent in about 20 minutes. The agent confirmed my return was in the final processing stage. If you're worried about your different acceptance dates, it might be worth calling to check if there are any issues with your newly married status. The IRS.gov forums mention that first-time joint filers sometimes face additional verification steps.

I've been through this exact situation. Last year my Indiana refund came a full 10 days before my federal one, and everything was perfectly fine. Have you checked if you have any credits on your federal return that might trigger extra review? Child Tax Credit or Earned Income Credit can add about a week to processing time even with no issues.

This is extremely helpful information. Per IRS Internal Revenue Manual 21.4.1.3, refund timing can indeed vary based on claimed credits. I appreciate your sharing your personal timeline comparison between state and federal processing. It's reassuring to know the gap between state and federal refunds is a normal occurrence rather than an indication of processing problems.

Compared to my clients' experiences this season, your timeline is actually normal. Newly married couples often see slightly longer processing times due to name/SSN verification processes. When my transcripts were confusing me last month, I used https://taxr.ai to analyze them and it showed exactly where my return was in the process. It predicted my deposit date within 1 day of actual receipt. Might be worth checking if your transcript is available - the tool can tell you if there are any hold codes or if you're just in normal processing. Many of my first-time joint filers are seeing 21-25 day processing times this year, so you're still within normal ranges.

I would suggest checking your tax transcript rather than relying on Where's My Refund. The transcript will typically update before WMR and provides more detailed information about your return's status. You can access this through your IRS online account. I'm hesitant to make any definitive predictions, but in my experience, when there's a significant gap between state and federal acceptance dates (like your 2/11 vs 2/14), it's usually just a matter of different processing queues rather than any issues with your return. Just be aware that as a newly married couple filing jointly for the first time, your return might undergo slightly more scrutiny.

Just got my refund today after filing on 1/22! Isn't it interesting how the state systems process so much faster than federal? My Indiana refund came on 2/19, and federal hit today (2/26). So about a week difference. First time filing as married filing jointly too. The IRS doesn't prioritize based on when you filed - they group similar returns together in processing batches. Your timeline sounds right on track with what I experienced. You'll probably see that federal deposit within the next few days.

I tracked my processing times meticulously. Filed on 1/23, Indiana acceptance on 2/9, federal acceptance on 2/12. My state refund was deposited exactly 14 days after state acceptance (2/23), and my federal refund came exactly 19 days after federal acceptance (3/3). The 5-day gap between state and federal deposit seems to be pretty standard based on the 6 people in my office who've received refunds so far. I was surprised by how predictable it was once I collected enough data points!

IME the diff between state/fed processing is totally normal. Last yr my IN refund came Feb 20 but fed didn't hit until Mar 8. WMR tool was stuck on "received" the whole time but $ still showed up. Fed system is dealing w/ millions more returns + extra verification steps. Def keep an eye on it but I wouldn't worry yet - you're still w/in the normal 21 day window they promise. Congrats on the marriage btw!

As a tax preparer, I recommend utilizing the Refund Status Inquiry (RSI) system rather than just WMR. For newly married taxpayers, the IRS often conducts additional verification procedures under the Taxpayer Protection Program (TPP) which can add 7-10 days to processing. The disparity between your state and federal acceptance dates (2/11 vs 2/14) is within normal parameters and doesn't indicate an issue. If you reach the 21-day mark post-acceptance (which would be March 6th in your case), then you should consider contacting the IRS directly. Until then, transcript monitoring is your most effective tracking method.
