Anyone else filed in February but still stuck in ID verify limbo? ๐Ÿงต

Can we get a thread going for people who didn't get their 2023 refund updated yet? ๐Ÿงต I e-filed on 2/2 and I still only have the two bottom boxes filled in on Where's My Refund with my 2023 info. Now it's saying I have to ID verify. According to the IRS2Go app and WMR tool I should've had my refund by now. This is our first year filing jointly after getting married last year, so maybe that's causing the delay? Anyone else in the same boat or know what's going on? TurboTax forums aren't helping much...

This is actually quite common this filing season. According to IRS Publication 5027, identity verification is a standard security measure that has been significantly expanded for the 2023 filing season (for returns filed in 2024). The IRS is being more cautious with returns that show significant changes from prior years, such as filing status changes (like yours from single to married filing jointly). Per IRS guidelines, you should receive Letter 5071C or 4883C within 2-3 weeks of filing if verification is needed. Have you checked your IRS online account at irs.gov/account to see if there are any notices posted?

Wait, so if I'm getting the ID verify message on WMR, I should wait for an actual letter? Or can I just go ahead and verify now? I'm in a similar situation but filed on 2/15 and really need this refund ASAP.

I waited exactly 27 days after getting that message before receiving my letter. The letter had a specific 6-digit code that I needed for the verification process. I tried verifying before getting the letter and the system wouldn't let me proceed without that code. Filed on 2/5, got the ID verify message on 2/19, letter arrived 3/17, verified same day, and refund was issued 7 days later.

Just got my letter today (4/2). Filed on 2/3. Exactly what you described - couldn't verify without the code in the letter.

Have you tried using a transcript analysis tool to understand what's actually happening behind the scenes? Many people don't realize that the WMR tool only shows very basic status information, while your actual transcript contains detailed cycle codes and transaction dates that tell the real story. I've been recommending https://taxr.ai to many clients this season who are facing verification delays. Why? Because it can analyze your transcript and tell you exactly what stage of processing you're in, even identifying if you're in the verification queue. Have you pulled your transcript yet to see what codes are showing up? The transcript will usually show a 570 hold code before the ID verification requirement appears on WMR.

I've seen a lot of people recommending transcript tools lately. How reliable are they really? The IRS website already lets you see your transcript for free.

Does taxr.ai actually explain the Transaction Code Combinations? I'm seeing TC 570 followed by TC 971 on my transcript from yesterday's update, but have no idea what that means for my expected DDD (Direct Deposit Date).

Can it tell if you're in identity verification? Or wage verification? Or both? My transcript has codes. No idea what they mean.

OMG this ID verify thing is INFURIATING! ๐Ÿ˜ก I tried calling the IRS verification hotline for THREE DAYS and couldn't get through - just constant busy signals or disconnects after waiting 2+ hours. Finally I broke down and used Claimyr (https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c) to get through to an agent. Worth every penny because they got me connected in about 25 minutes when I'd wasted literal days trying on my own. The agent confirmed I was selected for random identity verification (not because of any red flags) and helped me complete it over the phone rather than waiting for the letter. Has anyone else had success getting through to verify identity?

Wait, they can do the verification over the phone? The WMR tool just says to wait for instructions but doesn't give any phone number. Did they ask a bunch of personal questions?

Thanks for sharing this! I've been on hold so many times I've memorized their hold music. Might try this approach.

I used Claimyr last year when I had an amended return issue. Got through in like 30 minutes when I'd been trying for weeks. Definitely worth it when you're desperate to talk to a human.

Do they tell you right away if your verification was successful? Or do you still have to wait for processing after?

I deal with this every tax season with clients. Here's what's happening: The IRS has expanded their verification requirements dramatically this year. Any significant change from previous filing years - like your marriage and status change - triggers automatic verification. The system is backlogged. Don't panic. The fastest way forward: Don't wait for the letter if you have an IRS online account. Log in and look for a verification notice there. You can often complete verification online through ID.me without the letter. If you've already verified your identity with ID.me for your IRS account, call the dedicated verification line at 800-830-5084 between 7am and 7pm local time. After verification, expect 9-21 days for processing to complete. The WMR tool will update about 4-5 days after successful verification.

This is super helpful, thank you! I do have an IRS online account already set up. I'll check there for notices before waiting for a letter.

I verified through ID.me about a week ago and my bars on WMR just came back today! Refund scheduled for April 10th. The timing matches exactly what you said.

I went through this exact situation in February. Filed on 2/1, got the ID verify message on 2/20. I was also newly married and filing jointly for the first time. Here's the step-by-step solution that worked for me: 1. Don't wait for the letter if you're in a hurry. Call the dedicated ID Verification line: 800-830-5084 2. If you can't get through (very likely), try calling right when they open at 7am Eastern 3. When you reach an agent, explain you're calling about the ID verification message on WMR 4. They'll ask for your SSN, name, address, filing status, and verify information from your current and previous year's returns 5. If everything matches, they'll mark your verification as complete while you're on the phone 6. Your WMR status won't update immediately - mine took exactly 8 days to change from "being processed" to showing a direct deposit date 7. From verification to refund was exactly 14 days for me The marriage/filing status change definitely triggers additional verification. It's an anti-fraud measure, not a problem with your return.

Finally got my refund yesterday after the ID verification nightmare! Filed 2/5, got the verify message 2/22, verified 3/15, refund 4/1. The secret to success? I called at 7:01am exactly when they opened. ๐Ÿ˜‚ Still waited 45 minutes, but at least got through. The agent was super helpful and verified me right on the call. For anyone still waiting - hang in there! The system is definitely backed up this year, but they're working through it. One weird thing - my "Where's My Refund" never updated after verification. It stayed on the verification message until the day before the money hit my account. Oh, and my issue was also marriage-related. First time filing jointly, and the agent specifically mentioned that triggers extra verification this year.

Congrats on getting your refund! Did they ask any specific questions about your marriage during verification? Just wondering what to have ready when I call.

I had almost the exact same timeline! Filed 2/8, verified 3/18, got my refund yesterday. The early morning call trick definitely works.

I'm still waiting after verifying on 3/25. Your timeline gives me hope it should be any day now. Did you get the full amount you were expecting?
