Filed 02/15, accepted same day, submitted requested 1095A, now WMR says 'return closed' - what does this mean?
Filed my taxes on February 15th and got accepted the same day. Was expecting things to go smoothly but then I got a letter from the IRS requesting my 1095A form (health insurance marketplace form). I sent it in right away through the portal they specified. Checked Where's My Refund today and it now says my 'return is closed'. No explanation, no other information. Has anyone experienced this? What does a closed return even mean? Did they deny my refund completely? I was expecting around $3200 back and really need it for some upcoming expenses.

Tax professional here. When the IRS says your return is "closed," it typically means they've completed processing your return, but it doesn't necessarily indicate whether you're getting a refund or not. Given that you submitted the requested 1095A, there are several possibilities: 1. They may have adjusted your refund based on the 1095A information (Premium Tax Credit reconciliation) 2. They might have determined you're not eligible for a refund 3. It could be a system status that will update within a few days Your best actions now: - Check your tax transcript on IRS.gov for detailed information about what happened with your return - Call the IRS directly at 800-829-1040 (though prepare for long wait times) - Look for a notice in the mail explaining their determination, which should arrive within 2-3 weeks The "closed" status is uncommon but not necessarily bad news. You need to see the specific details of their determination.

•Thanks for this detailed answer. I just checked my transcript and there's a code 570 (additional account action pending) followed by a 971 (notice issued). Guess I'll wait for that notice to arrive.

•I had something similar happen. The notice will tell you exactly what's going on. In my case they adjusted my Premium Tax Credit amount which changed my refund by about $400.

•That might be it. I was estimating my premium tax credit since I hadn't received the 1095A when I filed. Maybe their numbers were different from mine.

•The IRS is an absolute nightmare this year. My sister had a similar issue and had to wait 11 weeks before getting any resolution. Good luck!

I've been in exactly the same situation and was getting nowhere trying to figure out what was happening. I finally used this tool called taxr.ai that actually explained everything on my transcript to me. It showed me exactly why my return got closed and what all those cryptic codes meant. Saved me hours of research and anxiety! Seriously, try https://taxr.ai - it'll solve your mystery way faster than waiting on hold with the IRS or guessing what happened.

•Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

•It's incredible! You upload your transcript and it analyzes all those confusing cycle codes, transaction codes, and dates that make zero sense to normal humans. It explains everything in plain English and even predicts what's happening next with your return. I was totally lost before using it - best decision I made during tax season tbh.

•Another tax app promising the world 🙄 Does it actually work or is it just taking your money and giving generic advice?

•I was super skeptical too! But it literally saved me thousands of dollars by helping me understand exactly what was happening with my refund and what to do next. Not generic at all - it gave me specific explanations for MY situation and codes. Way better than the 3 hours I spent going down IRS forum rabbit holes trying to decode everything myself!

After dealing with a similar situation (needed to provide health insurance docs), I finally managed to talk to an actual human at the IRS by using Claimyr.com. Got a call back from an agent within an hour instead of waiting on hold forever. She explained that my return was marked 'closed' because they had finished processing it after receiving my documentation, and my refund was actually being released in a few days! Might be worth using the service to get a definitive answer rather than wondering what's going on.

•Wait they actually got you through to a real person at the IRS? I've tried calling like 20 times and always get disconnected after waiting forever.

•Yeah it was amazing! The service basically navigates all the phone menus for you and holds your place in line, then calls you when an agent is available. Talking to a real person solved my problem in 10 minutes after weeks of confusion. Best money I've spent during this whole tax nightmare.

•Another app promising miracles... bet it doesn't actually work for most people. The IRS is completely underwater this year.

•I was super skeptical too, but it literally saved me weeks of stress. My refund was being held for a stupid reason that only took 5 minutes to fix once I actually talked to someone. Without the call, I'd still be waiting and wondering.

•Just tried it and got through in about 40 mins! Agent told me my return was closed because they were approving my refund with a small adjustment. Would never have known this otherwise!

Return" closed usually means'they re done processing your return. In most cases, you should receive a letter explaining why. The most common reason is that they adjusted your refund amount based on the correct premium tax credit from your 1095-A. Check your account transcript on the IRS site - it will show if'they ve issued arefund.

I had the EXACT same issue back in April. Filed early march, they asked for 1095A, I sent it, then "return closed". Turns out they adjusted my premium tax credit down by a few hundred dollars and sent me the rest of my refund like 3 weeks later. Check your mail - you should get a CP12 notice explaining the adjustment.

•That makes me feel better! I'll keep an eye out for that notice. How long after the "return closed" message did you get your refund?

•It was about 3 weeks between seeing "closed" and getting the money. The notice arrived like 5 days before the deposit. Hang in there!

The IRS is a friggin joke... they're probably just making up statuses at this point. "Return closed" is their way of saying "we're gonna take our sweet time and there's nothing you can do about it" 😂💀

•For real tho! Last year they made me wait 9 months for my refund with zero explanation 🙄

•FACTS. I've been waiting since february and keep getting different answers every time I call. It's like they're making it up as they go along.

OMG I went thru this in March! "Return closed" turned out to be good news for me - they made a small adjustment to my premium tax credit and then released my refund. It showed up in my bank about 10 days after the status changed to closed. You should get a notice explaining everything.

Have you tried calling them? I know its a pain but after like a 45 minute wait I finally got someone who could actually explain what was going on with my return.

•I've tried calling multiple times but keep getting the "high call volume" message and getting disconnected. Any tips for getting through?

•Call as soon as they open (7am in your time zone) and select the option for "questions about a tax return I already filed". Thats what worked for me!

•That doesn't work anymore. I tried calling right when they opened for 3 days straight and still got the "sorry we're too busy" message. The only way I got through was using claimyr.com - not cheap but saved me hours of frustration.

Return closed usually means they've made an adjustment to your refund based on the 1095-A information. Most likley, the premium tax credit amount you claimed was different than what was on your 1095-A. When this happns, they send you a CP12 adjustment notice and release the refund (usually smaller than what you initially claimed).

Look at your transcripts!!! That will tell you everything you need to know. It'll show if they adjusted your return, issued a refund, or are holding it for some reason. The WMR tool is notoriously unreliable.

•I just checked and see codes 570 and 971. From what I can tell online that means they're making an adjustment and sending a notice?
0 coins
Nia Harris
•Yes, exactly! 570 is an adjustment to your account and 971 means they're sending you a notice explaining it. If you're lucky, you'll see a 571 code (resolved adjustment) and an 846 code (refund issued) in the next cycle or two.

•I had those exact same codes a few weeks ago and got my refund 9 days later, slightly reduced from what I originally claimed. You should be fine!

Hot tip: download the IRS2Go app if you haven't already. Sometimes it shows more accurate/updated info than the website. My WMR said "still processing" for weeks but the app showed my refund had been approved.

Closed return usually = they made adjustment. Check transcripts to see if you have a 846 code (refund issued). Also look for 570/571 codes (pending/resolved adjustment). The WMR tool is basically useless compared to what your actual transcript will tell you.

I had a similar situation and used taxr.ai to understand what was happening. It showed me exactly what the "closed" status meant in my case (they were adjusting my refund amount) and even predicted when I'd get paid. Saved me so much stress! https://taxr.ai

This happened to me two years ago. "Closed" meant they had finished adjusting my marketplace tax credit amount based on the 1095-A and were issuing my refund (for about $650 less than I claimed). Unless you have other issues with your return, you'll probably get your money within 7-21 days, just less than you expected.

honestly the fact that the irs can just yoink our money all year and then make us jump thru hoops to get OUR OWN MONEY back is criminal. and then they hit us with these vague statuses with no explanation. the whole system is broken 🤡

I've been through this exact situation! After trying to get answers for weeks and getting nowhere, I finally used Claimyr.com to get through to an actual IRS agent. Found out my return was adjusted based on my 1095-A info and my refund was coming in 10 days. Talking to a real person was the only way I got a straight answer. Worth every penny to finally know what was going on instead of guessing.

Definitely check your transcripts - it has way more detailed info than the WMR tool. Most likely they adjusted your Premium Tax Credit based on the 1095-A you submitted, which would explain why they closed the return (processing complete) rather than sending it for further review. Unless there are other issues, your refund (possibly adjusted) should be issued soon.

My return was "closed" last year and it was honestly just a glitch in their system. Called them and they said everything was fine and my refund was being processed normally. Got it about 3 weeks later. The WMR tool is super unreliable.
