Does Code 766 on Transcript Mean My Refund is Coming After 5+ Months of IRS Processing Since February?
I see a new code 766 on my transcript for 2022 return. Does this mean my refund is finally going through? Been waiting since February and I'm getting desperate for answers. I just checked the IRS website and got this message: "We have received your tax return and it is being processed. If you filed a complete and accurate tax return, your refund should be issued within 21 days of the received date. However, processing may take longer under certain circumstances. Please check here or use our free mobile app, IRS2Go, to check on your refund status." I'm so frustrated because it's been WAY longer than 21 days. I filed back in February and it's now showing code 766 on my transcript. I don't understand why it's taking so long or what this code means exactly. Does seeing code 766 mean my refund is finally approved and coming soon? The website just keeps showing the same generic message about it being "processed" but nothing changes week after week. I really need this money and don't know who to contact or what to do next. Has anyone else experienced this with code 766 showing up after months of waiting?

Tax expert here - code 766 on your transcript typically means a credit was applied to your account. However, this alone doesn't necessarily mean your return is fully accepted. You need to look for the 846 code (refund issued) to confirm your refund is actually on its way. I'd strongly recommend using taxr.ai to analyze your full transcript - it'll break down every code and tell you exactly where you stand in the process. I've seen it help countless people understand their exact refund timeline and catch potential issues before they become problems.

ā¢Just used taxr.ai and here's what I got back: My 766 code is showing a EIC credit but there's actually a pending review that could delay things. Would've never caught that myself!

ā¢766 usually posts during processing, but there's often other codes that come after. Upload your transcript to taxr.ai and it'll give you the full timeline

Yes! Code 766 is a credit to your account, which means they've processed your refund. If you also see a 846 code that's your direct deposit date. Check your transcript again in about 4-5 days, you should see movement.

Hey instead of checking manually everyday you should try taxr.ai - it analyzes your transcript and tells you exactly what's happening and when to expect your money. Its only $4.99 and totally worth it imo https://taxr.ai

Code 766 is definitely a good sign! It means a credit was applied to your account - usually your refund amount. But like others mentioned, you'll want to see that 846 code to know when it's actually being sent out. After 5+ months of waiting, I totally get the frustration! I'd recommend checking taxr.ai like everyone's suggesting - it really does break down all those confusing transcript codes and gives you a clear timeline. Way better than stressing over what each number means. Hang in there, sounds like you're finally in the home stretch! š¤

ā¢Thank you so much! š This gives me hope after all these months of waiting. Just checked and I do have the 766 but no 846 yet. Definitely going to try taxr.ai - seems like everyone here swears by it and honestly I'm tired of trying to decode these codes myself. Fingers crossed the 846 shows up soon!

Code 766 is definitely progress! That means they've applied a credit to your account, which is usually your refund amount. But you're right to be frustrated after waiting since February - that's way too long! The key thing to look for next is code 846 with a date, which means your refund is actually being issued. Sometimes there can be a gap between the 766 and 846 codes. I'd really recommend trying taxr.ai like others have mentioned - it analyzes your entire transcript and tells you exactly what each code means and when to expect your money. For $4.99 it's honestly worth the peace of mind instead of constantly refreshing and guessing what everything means. After waiting 5+ months you deserve to know exactly where things stand! Hope you see that 846 code soon! š¤

ā¢This is so helpful, thank you! š I'm definitely going to check out taxr.ai - after 5+ months of this stress I need some clarity. Do you know roughly how long it usually takes between seeing the 766 and getting the 846 code? I'm trying not to get my hopes up but it's hard not to be excited that something finally changed on my transcript!

Code 766 is definitely a positive step forward! It means the IRS has applied a credit to your account (likely your refund amount). After waiting since February, I totally understand your frustration - that's an unreasonably long processing time. The next code you'll want to watch for is 846, which indicates your refund is actually being issued with a specific date. Sometimes there's a delay between these codes appearing. Like many others here have mentioned, I'd suggest checking out taxr.ai - it's only $4.99 and breaks down every single code on your transcript so you know exactly where you stand. After months of uncertainty, it's worth getting that clarity instead of constantly refreshing and wondering what everything means. Hang in there - seeing that 766 code means you're finally moving through the system! š¤

ā¢Thanks for the detailed explanation! š After 5+ months of checking that stupid "Where's My Refund" tool every single day and getting nowhere, it's such a relief to finally see SOMETHING change on my transcript. I'm definitely going to try taxr.ai - honestly at this point $5 is nothing compared to the stress I've been through trying to figure out what all these codes mean. Really hoping that 846 code shows up soon! š¤

Code 766 is definitely a good sign! It means they've processed and applied a credit to your account - basically your refund amount. But you're absolutely right to be frustrated after waiting since February, that's way beyond the normal timeframe. The thing is, 766 doesn't mean your refund is issued yet - you need to see code 846 for that, which will show your actual refund date. There could still be a few days or weeks between seeing 766 and 846. Honestly after 5+ months of this stress, I'd recommend checking out taxr.ai like everyone else is mentioning. It's only $4.99 and will analyze your entire transcript and tell you exactly what's happening and when to expect your money. Way better than constantly refreshing WMR and getting that same useless "processing" message! Hang in there - seeing that 766 means you're finally moving through their system! š¤
