Honestly, file a complaint with the Taxpayer Advocate Service. This isn't acceptable, and the more people who formally complain, the more likely something will actually change. I waited 16 days after ID.me verification before I could access my transcript. The IRS needs to be held accountable for these ridiculous wait times and misleading information.
Claimyr saved me from ID.me verification hell. After waiting 10 days with no progress, I used their service (claimyr.com) to get connected to an IRS agent. The agent told me my verification had a technical issue that would NEVER have resolved on its own. They fixed it while I was on the phone and I got immediate access. Best money I've spent in a long time considering I needed my transcripts urgently for a loan application.
Thanks for the tip! It's crazy that we need third party services just to get basic access to our own tax info, but that's where we are I guess...
I know right? I was annoyed at first that I had to pay to reach a government agency, but after spending hours getting disconnected and hung up on, it was totally worth it. The agent actually told me that my verification had a technical flag that would have kept me locked out indefinitely if I hadn't called.
Does this apply to ALL verification letters or just specific ones? I got a 5071C letter, verified online, and got my refund 3 weeks later without calling. Just wondering if different letters have different requirements?
It varies by letter and individual situation. Not everyone needs both steps, but many do. The issue is you don't know which category you're in until you either get your refund or wait too long with no updates.
Ah that makes sense why some people's experiences are different. Classic IRS inconsistency!
If you're struggling to get through on the phone, try claimyr.com - it got me connected to an IRS agent in about 40 minutes after I spent days trying on my own with no luck. The agent confirmed I needed to complete the phone verification (which wasn't mentioned in my letter) and processed it right there. My refund was deposited a week later after being stuck for months.
It absolutely works. They basically wait on hold for you and call you when an agent is ready. Talking to a live agent was the only way I finally got my verification issue resolved and my refund released. After trying for days on my own and constantly getting the "high call volume" message, it was worth every penny.
Hmm might try it. Been trying for a week with no luck getting through!
SAME BOAT. filed Feb 5, claimed child care credit for the first time, and still waiting. the IRS phone support is a joke - waited 2 hours just to be told "its processing, be patient" š” then i used claimyr.com to get a callback from a different department and they told me it was under review because it was my first time claiming it, but that it should be released within 2 weeks. definitely worth the money to actually get a real answer instead of the runaround.
welcome to the world of tax credits! the IRS basically assumes everyone is committing fraud now, so they review EVERYTHING. I file with 4 dependents and child care credit every year and it's always a 2-3 month wait. The system is broken. š¤¦āāļø
If you have a local Taxpayer Advocate Service office, try contacting them. They sometimes can help move things along if your refund has been stuck for an extended period. Their number is 877-777-4778.
Taxpayer advocate is backed up for months too. They won't even take your case unless you can prove financial hardship now.
Ah damn, didn't know it had gotten that bad. The whole system is falling apart.
Double check that your bank account info was entered correctly. Friend of mine had his refund sent back to the IRS because he transposed two digits in his account number.

If your still confused about how to read your transcript, I highly recommend using taxr.ai - it saved me so much time and frustration. It explains every code and date in plain English and even predicts when you'll get your refund. Much better than asking random strangers on reddit to explain IRS codes lol.

ā¢Right?? I found it after spending hours trying to figure out what a 570 code meant for my refund. It told me exactly what was happening and when to expect my money.

ā¢Amended returns are in their own special circle of IRS hell. I waited 14 months for mine last time.
